So the world’s ‘local global bank’ wasn’t being truthful? Or at least it has proved itself no longer local to Appleby. It must have had something bigger in mind.- more profitable than a bunch of personal accounts that take very little looking after. But it did make one wonder how a single organisation could have had its eyes on global business without losing focus on its personal service. Not surprising that people are saying high-street banking should be separated completely from the global investment business. Apparently changing the subject, what do we make of the strange weather we’re having? The topic of the moment, even more than usual! Quite apart from ‘will we get flooded?’, it hits the area financially: tourism depressed, farm incomes squeezed even more, and so on. But can we ‘blame’ anyone for disasters? (A pastime beloved by the press and broadcasters.) In the end it comes round to God. One well known personality proclaimed on the BBC he ‘lost any belief in a God’ when he witnessed the Aberfan disaster in Wales (in 1966 when bad weather caused a pit heap to collapse on top of a school). His colleague’s experience was of reporting in middle-east war zones where the pointless killing gave him a sense of the reality of evil and strengthened his faith in a good God who inspired compassion, and highlighted how bad the evil was. (The non-believer accused him of ‘profound arrogance’, while the believer thought he was demonstrating humility!) Bob Dylan had a song satirising the ‘With God on our side’ way of looking at faith - each tribe believing their God would look after them. A local god. On the other hand, if you believe that the baby Jesus whose birth we were celebrating, filling some of our churches a few weeks ago, was actually God coming to his world, demonstrating compassion, real wisdom, healing power, even resurrection, you’re looking at God who sees local need - yours and mine - yet at the same time sees the needs of the whole world, giving his life for all of us. The global view. Yes, it can be done, but only by God. And that’s where many Aid agencies (like Christian Aid, Tear Fund, Cafod, etc.) get their inspiration to keep going (globally the task looks hopeless, but person-to-person love takes over) - and it’s how you and I can be inspired to support their work, while putting our own cares into God’s hands.
