Manchester United FC face the daunting task of trying to halt the FC Bayern München juggernaut when these two European heavyweights meet in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final. • For United supporters the sight of Bayern will always bring back memories of that heady night in May 1999 when Sir Alex Ferguson's team snatched the European Cup out of the Bavarian club's grasp. However, this is a Bayern side with a coach, Josep Guardiola, who got the better of United in two UEFA Champions League finals with FC Barcelona, and who arrive in England on a run of seven consecutive away victories in the UEFA Champions League – and fresh from beating another Premier League team, Arsenal FC, in the last 16. • The UEFA Champions League provides United's only remaining hope of silverware in David Moyes's debut season but they can take heart from the way they overcame a two-goal deficit by beating Olympiacos FC 3-0 at Old Trafford last time out. Previous meetings • Bayern came out on top when the sides met at this same stage of the 2009/10 competition. In the first leg, 's men came from behind to win 2-1 after Franck Ribéry (77) and Ivica Olić (90+2) overturned a first-minute goal by . • United raced into a 3-0 lead in the second leg – Darron Gibson (4) and Nani (7, 41) scoring – but were edged out on away goals after Olić (43) and Arjen Robben (74) hit back for Bayern. The home side played the last 40 minutes with ten men after Rafael's red card. • The lineups at Old Trafford on 7 April 2010 were: Man United: Van der Sar, Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidić, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick (Berbatov 80), Gibson (Giggs 81), Valencia, Rooney (O'Shea 55), Nani. Bayern: Butt, Lahm, Van Buyten, Demichelis, Badstuber, Van Bommel, Schweinsteiger, Robben (Altıntop 76), Müller (Gomez 46), Ribéry, Olić (Pranjić 85). • Bayern also prevailed in the clubs' 2000/01 quarter-final, winning 1-0 at Old Trafford on 3 April 2001 thanks to Paulo Sérgio's 86th-minute goal. They ran out 3-1 aggregate winners with Giovane Elber (5) and Mehmet Scholl (39) striking in the second leg before Ryan Giggs (49) pulled a goal back. • That was a measure of revenge for Bayern's 1999 final defeat when Mario Basler gave them a sixth-minute lead that they held until added time when United substitutes Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær so famously turned the game on its head. • Giggs made one of seven appearances against Bayern in that final while Phil Neville, now assistant manager, was an unused substitute. • Bayern have visited Old Trafford four times overall and have a record of W1 D2 L1. The two drawn games came in the 1998/99 group stage (1-1) and the 2001/02 second group stage (0-0). Match background • Five-time winners Bayern are looking for a third successive UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance while United, European champions three times, were last in the semi-finals in 2011. United's quarter-final record in the European Cup is 12 wins and five defeats while for Bayern it is 15 wins and nine defeats. • United have won all four home fixtures in this season's competition – their best sequence since their triumphant 2007/08 campaign when they won six out of six. • United kicked off this season's group stage with a 4-2 home success against Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen and later won 5-0 in Leverkusen on matchday five – the biggest victory to date of Moyes's reign. • The English title holders have won their last six matches against Bundesliga visitors and their overall record at home to German teams is W8 D3 L2. Their combined home-and-away record is W14 D7 L6. • Bayern arrive in England on the back of a club-record run of seven straight away wins in the UEFA Champions League. • The holders are also seeking a fifth straight victory on English soil. This season they won 3-1 at Manchester City FC in the group stage and 2-0 at Arsenal en route to a 3-1 aggregate success in the round of 16. Last season, they won 3-1 at Arsenal in the last 16 before returning to London to overcome Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the final at Wembley. • Bayern's record away to English teams is W5 D7 L6; overall it is W16 D15 L12. • Bayern began the European season by beating Chelsea FC in the UEFA Super Cup. They won 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, Ribéry and Javi Martínez scoring.

• They have fared less well against English clubs in European Cup finals. Although they beat Leeds United AFC 2-0 in the 1975 final, they have since suffered final defeat against Aston Villa FC (0-1, 1982), United (1-2, 1999) and Chelsea (1-1, 3-4 pens, 2012). Team ties • Guardiola guided Barcelona to UEFA Champions League final triumphs against United in 2009 (2-0 in Rome) and 2011 (3-1 at Wembley). He also lifted the trophy as a player at Wembley when Barcelona overcame UC Sampdoria in 1992. • As a Barcelona player and coach, Guardiola's only away win against Premier League opposition in eight attempts was a 4-2 victory against Arsenal FC at Wembley in the 1999/2000 second group stage. There were four defeats, including a 1-0 reverse at Chelsea in the 2011/12 semi-finals. • Prior to this season Moyes's only previous managerial experience of Bundesliga opposition had come in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage when he led his Everton FC side to a 2-0 win at 1. FC Nürnberg. • Thomas Müller struck twice in Germany's 4-1 win against Rooney's England in the 2010 FIFA World Cup round of 16. Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Jérôme Boateng and Bastian Schweinsteiger also featured for Germany. • Boateng, Toni Kroos and Mario Götze played in Germany's 1-0 win over England at Wembley last November when Rooney, Chris Smalling and Tom Cleverley were on the losing side. • Shinji Kagawa hit the third-minute opening goal in Dortmund's 5-2 defeat of Bayern in the 2012 German Cup final. • Martínez was in the Athletic Club side who won 3-2 at Old Trafford en route to a 5-3 aggregate success against United in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League round of 16. • Xherdan Shaqiri played for the FC Basel 1893 side who eliminated United from the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage with a 2-1 home triumph in December 2011. • As a Chelsea player, Robben won three and drew one of four appearances against United, including a 1-0 FA Cup final win on his last outing for the club in 2007. • As a Manchester City player in 2010/11, Boateng played in a goalless home derby draw with United. • During a loan spell at City, Daniel Van Buyten played in two derbies against United in 2003/04, losing 4-2 in an FA Cup tie at Old Trafford before helping City to a 4-1 home league win. • Van Buyten appeared alongside Marouane Fellaini in Belgium's 2-1 win at Mario Mandžukić's Croatia in October 2013 as the Red Devils booked their place at the 2014 World Cup. • David de Gea played with Thiago Alcántara in Spain's UEFA European Under-21 Championship-winning sides of 2011 and 2013. Martínez was a team-mate of De Gea in 2011.

FSV Mainz 05 kept Bayern at bay for 82 minutes – the longest any side has resisted them in the league this term – before Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Götze earned the visitors a 2-0 win. • Arjen Robben signed a two-year contract extension on 19 March, tying him to the Bavarian outfit until June 2017. Dante added an additional 12 months to his deal, now running to 2017, five days later. • Bayern are 33 games unbeaten away from home in the Bundesliga (W27 D4), breaking their German top-flight record set between December 1985 and August 1987. 12 Manchester United FC - FC Bayern München Tuesday 1 April 2014 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) Match press kit Old Trafford, Manchester Head coach Manchester United FC: David Moyes Date of birth: 25 April 1963 Nationality: Scottish Playing career: Celtic FC, Cambridge United FC, Bristol City FC, Shrewsbury Town FC, Dunfermline Athletic FC, Hamilton Academical FC, Preston North End FC Coaching career: Preston North End FC, Everton FC, Manchester United FC • Moyes started out with Celtic but spent much of his playing career as a centre-back in England and Scotland's lower leagues. • The tall Scot appeared more for Preston than for any other club, and it was with the north-west English team that Moyes – ever the keen student of the game – first tested his managerial potential between 1998 and 2002. • Became regarded as one of the country's most promising young managers, taking Preston from the third tier to the brink of promotion to the Premier League before accepting the Everton job in March 2002. • Succeeding Walter Smith, he breathed new life into Everton immediately, his first full season seeing Wayne Rooney's emergence and a first top-half finish since 1996. The Blues went on to finish fourth in the Premier League in 2004/05 but missed out on a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage after a qualifying loss to Villarreal CF. • Moyes subsequently led an Everton team featuring astute signings such as Tim Cahill, Mikel Arteta and Phil Jagielka to three further European qualifications and the 2009 FA Cup final, yet silverware eluded him in his 11 years at Goodison Park. In May 2013, not long after turning 50, Moyes was named as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor as Manchester United manager. FC Bayern München: Josep Guardiola Date of birth: 18 January 1971 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: FC Barcelona, Brescia Calcio (twice), AS Roma, al-Ahly Club, Dorados de Sinola Coaching career: FC Barcelona B, FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München • Known as 'Pep', he came up through Barcelona's youth ranks to win six Spanish Liga titles, one European Champion Clubs' Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and two Copa del Rey trophies from 1990 to 2001. Also had spells with Brescia, Fabio Capello's Roma, al-Ahly in Doha and Mexico's Dorados de Sinola before ending his playing career in 2006. Won 40 caps and Olympic footballing gold with Spain in 1992, but missed the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup tournaments through injury. • Having coached Barcelona's B team, he took charge of the senior side in 2008 and won the UEFA Champions League, Spanish Liga and Copa del Rey in his first season in charge. In the process he became the sixth man to have lifted the European Cup as player and coach. • That was just the beginning of a glorious four-season spell which yielded 14 trophies in all. In his second campaign, Guardiola steered Barcelona to a second Liga title as well as the Spanish and UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup. Even more sucess followed in 2010/11 as Barcelona completed a hat-trick of Spanish titles and, for the second time under Guardiola, got the better of Manchester United FC in the UEFA Champions League final.

• In his final season, 2011/12, Guardiola's team won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup once more before he signed off his reign with a second Copa del Rey triumph. • After a year's break from football, Guardiola took charge of Bayern in June 2013, replacing Jupp Heynckes at the helm. In his first campaign he collected the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and, with a record seven games to spare, the Bundesliga title.
