ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA

On Sunday October 21st Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha and six other Blesseds will be canonized at St. Peter's in Rome. She was born in 1656 to a baptized Algonquin mother and a Mohawk chieftain along the Mohawk River. Her parents and brother succumbed to a smallpox epidemic when she was 6; she survived but with weakened eyes and a badly scarred face. She was baptized in 1676 by Jesuit Fr. Jacques de Lamberville. She quickly grew in the Christian virtues but was taunted by other villagers including her own relatives. She moved to Kahnawake, a Christian Iroquois village on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, opposite Montréal. Jesuit Fathers Pierre Cholenec and Claude Chauchetiere were greatly impressed by her devout faith. She received Holy Communion for the first time Christmas Day, 1677. Her health was never good, and in the difficult winter of 1680 she died, Holy Thursday, April 17th. An aunt who had known her from the time she was a child, returned to the village about 15 minutes after Kateri's death. By that time all the smallpox scars had disappeared from her face. The aunt looked on totally amazed, and said ‘little sunshine’, the name she had called her niece when she was a young child prior to the smallpox. Kateri's body is buried in the St . Francois-Xavier Mission Church, in Kahnawake, opposite Montreal. Aboriginal people in Canada and the USA have honored St. Kateri. Each summer the Kateri Conference is held in the northwestern USA, bringing together many people to grow in their faith.

Also to be canonized on October 21st is Fr. Jacques Berthieu, SJ, a native of , missionary to and martyred there in 1896. Another to be canonized is Pedro Calungsod, a native of Cebu in the Philippines. As a sacristan and a missionary catechist, he accompanied Jesuit to Guam in 1672. At 17 years of age he was martyred while trying to protect his companion, Jesuit priest Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores.

The prayer card of St. Kateri is a photo of a wooden sculpture in the Church of the Gesu in Montréal. The sculpture was done by Raymond Fortin and the photo taken by Fr. Len Altilia, SJ.
