Sheep Ireland background

Sheep Ireland was established in 2009. It was recognised that Ireland needed a new sustainable breed improvement programme that would identify the best genetics to improve growth rates, lambing performance and health. One of the main drivers that affect farm profitability is the number of lambs weaned per ewe per year, of which Ireland’s average (1.3 lambs per ewe) has not progressed in the last 30 years or so. There is significant scope for national sheep improvement using genetic improvement.

Physical checks and €uroStars must go hand in hand Step 1 – Ram NCT Regardless of what €uroStar Index a ram may have, if the ram is not physically correct, he will not perform as he should. All farmers should carry out a ram NCT (check) on all existing stock rams and rams being considered for purchase. There are five basic things all sheep farmers should look at – these can be summarised as the 5 T’s;

1. Timing Rams should be assessed at least 10-12 weeks prior to breeding for body condition score and to identify any other potential problems. Early detection of physical issues provides a farmer with a chance to get the ram ready for the breeding season.

2. Tone A ram should be in good condition for the annual breeding season. A target condition score of 4 will ensure that the ram is fit and not over fat. Rams will lose some condition over the course of a busy breeding season, so farmers need to ensure that rams are in adequate condition before mating begins.

3. Teeth All breeding rams teeth should be checked annually. This check should extend to the overall mouth including the molars (side teeth), which should be checked by rubbing the outside of the rams checks for bumps/abscesses etc. Correct teeth/mouths are particularly important if replacement females are being retained from an individual breeding ram. Rams with teeth/mouth issues will struggle to maintain body condition and are not likely to perform to their potential.

4. Toes Checking a rams toes pertains to checking his feet and legs. If a ram is lame at any point in time, it may lead to temporary fertility issues due to a rise in body temperature. Addressing lameness issues is one of the key reasons to assess rams 10-12 weeks before the breeding season. This will allow time to address any potential issues. Farmers should consider culling persistently lame rams and should not retain replacement females from such rams where possible. Rams should also have four strong, straight legs. The hind legs are particularly important when it comes to rams ability to mate ewes so pay Sheep Ireland Guide & Directory of Breeders | 3 particular attention here. Rams which are weak on their pasterns (the part of the leg just above the hoof) may need to be culled earlier than desired due to an inability to mate adequate numbers of ewes.

5.Testicles Checking rams testicles is another critical part of the NCT. Bigger is generally better as these rams will generally produce more sperm. The most important thing however to check, is that there are two testicles present. A ram can be fertile with a single testicle, but it may affect the number of ewes he will mate during the breeding season. The rams testicles should be loose and free from abnormal lumps/bumps. If checking the testicles appears to be causing the ram obvious pain, then this should be investigated closer by a vet. A rams penis area should also be checked for any obvious signs of trauma.

Final physical check If possible at mating time, try to spend time watching rams with the ewes. Ensure that the ram is successfully mating with the ewes. All breeding rams should be raddled on their chest area or fitted with a crayon harness to mark each ewe as they are being mated. These raddle/crayon colours can then be changed on the ram/s in advance of the ewes second oestrus cycle (day 14/15 after initial ram introduction). A high number of ewes being marked by the second raddle/crayon will help to identify a fertility issue. If using a team of rams in the same group it will be difficult to identify an issue with an individual ram. If single sire mating, a ram fertility issue will be very obvious using the raddle/crayon. Speak to your local Teagasc/Agricultural advisor about any breeding issues that you may be having on your farm.

Accuracy % (Acc %)

A critical element of the €uro-Stars Acc is an abbreviation of Accuracy. This figure is extremely important as it represents the amount of data behind each individual evaluation. Where Acc % is Poor, a considerably smaller emphasis should be placed on the evaluation, however where Acc% is Good or V.Good a considerable emphasis can be placed on the evaluation when making a breeding decision.

Factors that affect accuracies Accuracy % is a reflection of the amount of data available for a particular bloodline within a sheep breed. The more data that is available for a bloodline, the higher the accuracy% will be for an animal. Higher accuracy%, results in more dependable €uroStar evaluations. Low accuracy% evaluations are less dependable and may be subject to change as more data is recorded into the future.

Why do €uroStar evaluations change sometimes? When the Accuracy% associated with genetic evaluations is lower than desired for an animal/ bloodline/sheep breed, there is the potential for an animals €uroStar index to move. These movements are caused by new data being captured for the relevant animal or bloodline. New data is continually being recorded and as a result the €uroStar Indexes are continually improving and becoming more accurate. Sheep Ireland Guide & Directory of Breeders | 7

How to combat low Accuracy%

Using the ‘Ram Team’ concept The threat posed by low accuracy affects all genetic evaluation systems. It takes a number of years to build accuracy% and performance data on our various sheep breeds. In dairy, low accuracy% evaluations are combated by using ‘teams’ of bulls. When purchasing AI straws a small number of straws from a large number of high Index bulls are used. In this way if one or two bull’s indexes drop, the average genetic index of the ‘team’ is not impacted hugely. The herd still makes genetic progress.

Most Irish commercial sheep farmers use a number of rams annually – this is essentially a team of rams, so the same concept can and should be used to deliver genetic gain in the flock over a number of years.

Other things to look out for in relation to Accuracy% • Try to purchase rams with as high an accuracy% as possible – This shows that there is a lot of data recorded for this bloodline • Purchase from high Data Quality Index (DQI) LambPlus ram breeders – A high DQI illustrates that a breeder has recorded a high proportion of the data requested by Sheep Ireland annually • Purchase rams that have Central Progeny Test (CPT) data in their background (see page 12 for more on the CPT) – The CPT is a ram testing programme which generates a large volume of commercial flock data on Irish sheep breeds annually. – Purchasing rams with CPT tested sires in their ancestry is very desirable as this will result in higher accuracy% – CPT rams have been tested in commercial conditions on large grass based farms, so this background data should be sought after by purchasers 8 | Sheep Ireland Guide & Directory of Breeders

There are a range of options available to both pedigree and commercial farmers who are looking to fi nd a Sheep Ireland performance recorded ram.

• The Sheep Ireland Online Ram Search can be found on the Sheep Ireland homepage at www.sheep.ie. This ram search allows farmers to search for rams by sheep breed, county, age and €uroStar index.

• The Directory of LambPlus breeders which can be found at the back of this publica- tion. This lists breeders based on sheep breed and then by county.

• The Sheep Ireland multi-breed ram sale takes place on the fourth Saturday of August each year in Tullamore mart. Some of the best sheep genetics in the country are presented for sale here annually.

• The vast majority of breed society sales will have evaluations included in their sales catalogues, but we would always recommend that you contact the society in ad- vance of the sale to ensure these animals and evaluations will be visible on the day. LambPlus

What is LambPlus? LambPlus is the performance recording programme which pedigree ram breeders and commercial sheep farmers participate in to performance record their flocks. LambPlus offers a state of the art online system to record flock data and provides genetic evaluations to users which are updated on a weekly basis.

The number of LambPlus participants has grown year on year since Sheep Ireland was founded in 2009. The programme began with less than 80 participants and has over 700 today. Continuing to grow participation is critical for several reasons

1. Increasing the number of recorded rams currently available for commercial farmers 2. Increasing the amount of data recorded on each of our sheep bloodlines, leading to more accurate genetic evaluations 3. Increasing the rate of genetic gain in the national flock for the benefit of all Irish sheep farmers.

In 2016 data from over 20,000 purebred lambs has been collected from flocks participating in LambPlus. In addition to this data from purebred flocks, data from almost 10,000 commercial lambs has fed into the Sheep Ireland database in 2016. This commercial data comes from the Sheep Ireland Central Progeny Test (CPT), Teagasc research flocks, Teagasc Better farm programme flocks and from other independent commercial farmers performance recording their flocks.

€uroStar Indexes – What are the ingredients?

The following information is being collected by LambPlus breeders to construct the €uroStar indexes. This information is collected through a combination of LambPlus participants themselves and Sheep Ireland technicians which visit participant’s farms.

Data Quality Index (DQI) The DQI is a figure that appears on all Sheep Ireland ram sale catalogues. This figure scores each LambPlus participant in relation to the quality of performance data recorded by the participant over the course of the year. The completeness and timeliness of data recording are two major elements of the DQI. A high DQI% is desirable as it demonstrates that a substantial amount of information is being recorded by a particular flock.

€uroStars Indexes showing good results

The Central Progeny Test programme has generated a huge amount of sheep performance data since its beginning in 2010. This data can be now be used to assess the differences between high €uroStar and low €uroStar sheep. The most recent look at this data has shown very encouraging results.

The table below demonstrates these differences. The 1 Star data represents when 1 Star rams were mated with 1 Star ewes. The 5 Star data represents when 5 Star rams were mated with 5 Star ewes. These indexes were the animal indexes at the point of mating so it proves that the €uroStars are successfully predicting which sheep will be the better performers.

When the above gains are combined and applied across an individual flock, it is clear that there are significant benefits available for Irish sheep farmers. Furthermore, if these gains can be applied nationally, our industry can make great progress using sheep genetic indexes.

Commercial sheep data – driving the €uroStars

Central Progeny Test (CPT) Each year Sheep Ireland collects thousands of records from commercial animals. Some of the traits collected include lambing difficulty scores, litter size, birthweights, lamb weights, muscle and fat depths and mature ewe weights along with many more traits that are important to the profitability of Irish sheep farmers.

The Central Progeny Test (CPT) flocks make up the majority of the commercial data that Sheep Ireland collects each year along with some of the Teagasc Better farms and some independent flocks also. The four CPT flocks combined artificially inseminate (AI) approximately 2,500 ewes each autumn. These ewes are AI’d with the top replacement stock rams of the performance recording flocks from around the country. This allows us to verify the data that has been collected on them to date, to easily identify the sire of the lambs and to compare rams and breeds being used all over the country on the same farms.

The lambs from these top sires are then tested against each other on commercial flocks, with all this data feeding back to the €uroStar evaluations of the different bloodlines used. A multitude of data is recorded on these CPT flocks throughout the year, including ewe milk scores, ewe motherability scores and lamb vigour at birth, as well as any incidences of prolapse or mastitis. At several points throughout the year all the ewes and lambs have their weight, BCS, dag score and any incidences of lameness recorded. Individual faecal egg count (FEC) tests will also be carried out on a number of CPT lambs.

Sheep Genomics The next step for genetic improvement

Genomics looks at the DNA of an individual sheep and identifi es genes/traits within that DNA. Sheep Ireland will use this DNA information and combine it with the physical performance data that is currently being collected annually. This DNA or ‘genomic’ information will lead to higher accuracy% €uroStar evaluations for Irish sheep farmers.

To date, DNA samples have been collected and analysed from over 12,000 Irish pedigree sheep through a research project called OVIGEN which is funded by the Irish Department of Agriculture.
