Population change within the County of – 2011 to 2013

The release of 2013 mid-year population estimates at small area level in October 2014 means that population changes affecting areas of the county in the period between the 2011 census in April 2011 and 2013 can be examined in more detail. It should be noted that the mid-year population estimates are calculated with reference to a base population (2011 census) for an area, together with elements of natural change in the population (births, deaths, migration) as derived from an examination of available datasets such as official registration of births & deaths, changes in GP registrations etc.

Main points

 The population of Nottinghamshire increased by 1.2% between 2011 and 2013 (786,800 2011 mid-year estimates to 796,200 2013 mid-year estimates). The chart above shows that the main age groups experiencing population growth are population aged 65-74 years, 45-59 years and 5-9 years.  At census ward level, comparing 2013 mid-year estimates with the same areas from the 2011 census, the wards experiencing the highest growth in population (9%) are Sherwood Ward in District and Bestwood Village ward in Gedling District. Kings Walk ward in has a population increase of 8% and East ward in has a population increase of 7%.  Other wards experiencing increases in total population of 5-6% between 2011 and 2013 are Killisick ward in Gedling District; Portland and Sandhurst wards in Mansfield District; Kirkby in Ashfield East ward in Ashfield District; Farndon ward in Newark & Sherwood District; Kirkby in Ashfield central ward in Ashfield District; and Bingham west and Trent Bridge wards in District.

 Wards experiencing decreases in population over the period are Sutton ward in , Park Hall ward in Mansfield District and Compton Acres ward in Rushcliffe District (4% decrease respectively). Population in Southwell North ward decreased by 3% over the period.  A map of the county showing population changes in census wards from 2011 to 2013 can be downloaded using the links provided on the main web page.  The 2011 Area Classification for Output Areas (OAC) categorises all UK census output areas based on 2011 Census data on a wide range of socioeconomic and demographic topics. They aim to identify parts of the UK with similar characteristics using a defined set of supergroups, groups and subgroups. An Output Area (OA) is the basic building block for census data, and usually has a population between 100 and 625 persons, and between 40 and 250 households. One grouping/category in the list of the 21 categories making up the ‘group’ sub-division which could help identify areas of the county where migration is occurring is the category ‘Migration and Churn’. 58% of the total population in Carr Bank ward in Mansfield District and 51% of the total population in Killisick ward in Gedling District are categorised under the classification as ‘Migration and Churn’.  Other wards in the County where ‘Migration and Churn’ make up around a third of the ward total population are South East ward in Bassetlaw District (37%), Netherfield and Colwick ward in Gedling District (32%), Valley ward in Gedling District (35%), Woodhouse ward in Mansfield District (36%), and Devon ward in Newark & Sherwood District(34%).

Young people

 Census wards experiencing the greatest increases in the population aged 0-4 years between 2011 and 2013 are Beckingham ward in Bassetlaw District (38%), Manor ward in Mansfield District (35% increase), ward in Newark & Sherwood District (31%), Bestwood Village ward in Gedling District (27%) and Sandhurst ward in Mansfield District (27%).  The wards with the greatest proportion of the total population aged under 20 in 2013 are Killisick ward in Gedling District (32%), Worksop South East ward in Bassetlaw District (29%), Oak Tree and Kings Walk wards in Mansfield District and Clipstone ward in Newark & Sherwood District (28% respectively). Older People

 Total population in the county aged over 60 increased by 8% between 2011 and 2013. Awsworth ward in Broxtowe District had the greatest increase in population aged over 60 between 2011 and 2013 (25%). Nuthall East ward in Broxtowe District and Kings Walk ward in Mansfield District had increases in population aged over 60 between 2011 and 2013 of 24% and 20% respectively. Equivalent figures for Nottinghamshire Districts are 9% increases for Rushcliffe, Bassetlaw, Newark & Sherwood and Rushcliffe Districts; 8% increase for Ashfield District; 7% increase for Gedling District, and 6% for Mansfield District.  Wards experiencing the greatest decreases in population aged over 60 between 2011 and 2013 include Portland ward in Mansfield District (10% decrease), Oak Tree ward in Mansfield District (8% decrease) and Beeston Central ward in Broxtowe District (5% decrease).  The ward with the greatest proportion of the total population aged over 60 in 2013 is Keyworth North ward in Rushcliffe District (45%). Other wards with over 40% of the total population aged over 60 include Berry Hill ward in Mansfield District (43%) and Southwell North ward in Newark & Sherwood District (40%). District, and Tollerton ward in Rushcliffe District have 38% of the total population aged over 60. The county average in 2013 is 26%, up from 25% in 2011.  There were 6,618 people aged over 90 in the county in 2013, up from 5,885 as reported in the 2011 census, a 12% increase. Sutton in Ashfield East ward in Ashfield District has the largest number of people aged 90 and over in the county (132 people), followed by Sutton in Ashfield Central ward in Ashfield District with 122 people. Eastwood South ward in Broxtowe District is another ward with over 100 residents aged and 90 and over (105 people).  The 2011 Output Area Classification (OAC) shows that 37% of the total population in Cranmer ward in Rushcliffe District can be categorised as ‘Ageing rural dwellers’. Wards with around one third of the population categorised as ‘Ageing rural dwellers’ include Blyth and Sutton wards in Bassetlaw District, and Southwell East ward in District.  The ward in the county with the highest proportion of total population categorised as ‘Ageing urban dwellers’ under OAC is Lady Bay ward in Rushcliffe District (43%).
