BRIEF OUTLINE
The Union of Municipali es of Bassa Romagna is located in the heart of the Province of Ravenna, between the Adria c Sea and the Romagna hills, in the north- eastern part of Italy. It covers a total area of 480 square kilometers and a popula on of more than 100 thousand inhabitants (102,390 at 31/12/2016). It is a Public Law organisa on, a Local Authority that associates 9 Municipali es: Alfonsine, Bagnacavallo, Bagnara di Romagna, Conselice, Co gnola, Fusignano, Lugo, Massa Lombarda and Sant'Agata sul Santerno. The biggest center is Lugo, with more than 30 thousands inhabitants, and it is also where the Union has its offices, followed by Bagnacavallo (almost 16 thousands), and the smallest one is Bagnara di Romagna (2,5 thousands).
HISTORY, ECONOMY AND CULTURE
Historically, traces of the first human se lements date back to the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age, but above all there are links to Roman coloniza on, and then ves ges da ng back to the early Middle Ages. But current urban footprints are significantly linked to the later Middle Age and mainly to the Renaissance era of Signorie, when different Lords, Viscon , Sforza and Este, succeeded in their power, leaving relevant architectural and cultural heritage on the whole area. It is a land with a predominantly agricultural soul, the fields are covered with wheat and corn crops, with endless extents of peaches, pears, apricots, sunflowers, kiwis, apples and rows of grape vines.
In addi on to the great agri-food poten ali es, the district of Bassa Romagna bases its economic strengths on the importance and diversifica on of the manufacturing industry, the compe veness of the logis cs system due to its key posi on with respect to the main communica on routes; on a commercial voca on hinged on historical centers and markets. A rich and orderly countryside, the presence of important natural reserve sites, historic city centers together with more recent towns, rising in a landscape marked by waterways and do ed with parish churches, oratories, country houses, farmhouses, fortresses and noble palaces, are the main reasons why Bassa Romagna is also known as the land of benvivere (fine living), a land on a human scale, to be walked or biked in order to enjoy rare environmental jewels and discover authen c art treasures. A wide offer of educa onal, social and health services and the good balance among the nine main towns, that results in a sustainable territory able to avoid urban conges on phenomena, together with the importance of historical and ar s c tradi ons, a marked cultural vitality and quality and tradi onal products are other, but not less important, features of Bassa Romagna as “fine living” land.
