HISTORY, ECONOMY AND CULTURE

Historically, traces of the first human selements date back to the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age, but above all there are links to Roman colonizaon, and then vesges dang back to the early Middle Ages. But current urban footprints are significantly linked to the later Middle Age and mainly to the Renaissance era of Signorie, when different Lords, Viscon, Sforza and Este, succeeded in their power, leaving relevant architectural and cultural heritage on the whole area. It is a land with a predominantly agricultural soul, the fields are covered with wheat and corn crops, with endless extents of peaches, pears, apricots, sunflowers, kiwis, apples and rows of grape vines.

In addion to the great agri-food potenalies, the district of Bassa Romagna bases its economic strengths on the importance and diversificaon of the manufacturing industry, the compeveness of the logiscs system due to its key posion with respect to the main communicaon routes; on a commercial vocaon hinged on historical centers and markets. A rich and orderly countryside, the presence of important natural reserve sites, historic city centers together with more recent towns, rising in a landscape marked by waterways and doed with parish churches, oratories, country houses, farmhouses, fortresses and noble palaces, are the main reasons why Bassa Romagna is also known as the land of benvivere (fine living), a land on a human scale, to be walked or biked in order to enjoy rare environmental jewels and discover authenc art treasures. A wide offer of educaonal, social and health services and the good balance among the nine main towns, that results in a sustainable territory able to avoid urban congeson phenomena, together with the importance of historical and arsc tradions, a marked cultural vitality and quality and tradional products are other, but not less important, features of Bassa Romagna as “fine living” land.
