PARISH LIFE

ABOUT OUR PARISH TABERNACLE CANDLE COAT OF ARMS

Our parish coat of arms is full of symbolism. The design is simple and meant to be easily recognizable, both at a distance and in small resolution. In formal heraldic language, it would be described as Vert, above two fish hauriant At Elizabeth Ann Seton Church: respectant and a fish contourné in base Argent, a Greek enclosed Our Son Roy within an annulet Or. In plain by Bob Greek English, it is a green shield with three upwards-facing silver fish beneath a golden ringed cross.

The fish is a common symbol of Saint Raphael. This connection comes from the Book of Tobit, where the angel, in the guise of a human being, guides the pious young Tobiah on a journey. While bathing in a river, Tobiah is attacked by a large fish. Raphael orders him to catch the fish, and Tobiah works many wonders with it — using its gall to drive out demons and to heal the blindness of his father, Tobit.

Generally speaking, fish have a long and rich history in and symbolism. Early Christians used to identify each other in the days of persecution by drawing a primitive fish — for ΙΧΘΥΣ (), “fish” in Greek, is STEWARDSHIP an anagram for Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter: “ Christ, the Son of God, Please continue to support our Savior.” Fish are also a natural symbol of baptism, as the Church Father parishes with your Parish Share Tertullian writes: “we, little fishes, after the example of our ΙΧΘΥΣ, Jesus Christ, pledges and additional donations. are born in water” (On Baptism, 1).

On the shield there are three fish — three, for the Holy , into whose life we are incorporated by baptism, and three for our three parent parishes of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Margaret of Scotland, and Ss. Simon and Jude.

If you would like to contribute to the The second symbol of the coat of arms is the ringed cross. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | JOHN 1: 41, 17

We have found the Messiah: Jesus Christ, who brings us truth and grace.

GOSPEL | JOHN 1: 35-42

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” — which translated means Teacher —“where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” — which is translated Christ —. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” — which is translated Peter.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Creed

Our Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel is presenting a monthly Livestreamed and Zoom event hosted by Fr. Alek Schrenk. Join us on the First Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. for “Wine, Cheese, and The Creed.” Fr. Alek will be our guide on a year-long journey into a deeper understanding of the prayer by which we profess twelve basic tenets of our Catholic faith, the Apostles’ Creed. What a great way to renew our faith as we launch our new parish! If you missed our first session in which Fr. Alek introduces the Creed and explores the article, “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,” you can access it several ways. Go to the quick link (Fr. Alek’s Wine, Cheese, and the Creed) on our parish website or by clicking the link under “Our Ministries.” Session One is also available on YouTube (The Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel; Wine, Cheese, and the Creed). Mark your calendars for February 4 at 7:00 p.m., when the topic will be “…and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.” When you attend live, you will be able to join in the question and answer portion of the program. All are welcome to tune in! * wine and cheese not included

ARING IVING ERVING

This Friday, January 22, is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Please spend some time each day this week thanking God for the gift of your own life, reflecting on and giving thanks for all the people whose lives have impacted you, and praying for the most vulnerable members of society. Take some time to ponder and pray over the quotes below about the preciousness of human life from the time of conception:

“Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works.” Psalm 139: 13-14

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” Jeremiah 1:5

“A thief comes only to steal and slaughter, and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” John 10: 10

“For God, the lord of life, has entrusted to women and men the outstanding service of watching over life and of fulfilling this in a manner worthy of human beings. Therefore, from the time of conception life is to be safeguarded with the greatest of care; abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.” Guadium et Spes, 51

“The first person in the world to welcome Jesus, to recognize him in the womb of his own mother, was a child: John the Baptist. It is wonderful; God chooses an unborn child to announce the coming of his redeeming Son.” St. Teresa of Calcutta

“To claim the right to abortion, infanticide and euthanasia, and to recognize that right in law, means to attribute to human freedom a perverse and evil significance: that of an absolute power over others and against others. This is the death of true freedom.” Pope St. John Paul II

“The use of prenatal diagnoses for selective purposes must be strongly discouraged because it is the expression of an inhuman eugenics mentality, which removes the possibility for families to accept, embrace and love their weakest Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration on Friday, children.” January 22. See the Pastor’s Page for details. Pope Francis

A special message from St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech:

A new year is upon us and we are so grateful to have the opportunity to share a bit about our programs and to work together once again. This weekend has been designated for the special collection to benefit St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech. On behalf of our students and staff, we can’t thank you enough for supporting these invaluable programs that benefit many members of our Diocese.

St. Anthony’s and DePaul both fill a necessary role for special SECOND education within the Diocese of Pittsburgh. St. Anthony School COLLECTION Programs offer an inclusive education to children ages 5-21 years with special needs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech TODAY! teaches children, birth to 14 years, who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen, speak, and learn. Both programs empower students to become active and contributing members of their respective communities.

Any help you can give is deeply appreciated and makes a tremendous impact on the students we serve, as well as their families. Our fundraising efforts have been greatly impacted by the pandemic, so again, any support you are able to give means so much.

Thank you for your time and God bless.

UPDATE from the St. Vincent de Paul Society

During the first nine months of the pandemic, members of our conference realized that requests for assistance were surprisingly modest considering the unemployment numbers and other challenges from Covid-19. That all changed in December as the phone calls and needs increased significantly. In the last 28 days we have provided assistance for rent/mortgage and utility payments for twelve people – triple the need in a typical month. The people we help are our neighbors; they are the working poor and disabled living within our parish boundaries. We have concerns that as their requests for help increase, we may reach an emergency status with regard to our funds. Time and again we have witnessed your generous help for our neighbors and take this opportunity to remind you that the next collection, via special envelope for St. Vincent de Paul will be on February 21st. May God bless you for your faithfulness to our mission.

ST. MARGARET OF SCOTLAND SCHOOL

CLASSROOM CHRONICLES Each week we will highlight the amazing things that are going on in our classrooms here at St. Margaret of Scotland School. Mrs. Jaclyn Walsh – 4th Grade/Elementary Music: 4th Grade students kicked off 2021 by making their “New Year’s Resolutions”. Students were required to set practical goals for themselves to achieve both at home and school. In Math, students have begun division concepts including the relationship between multiplication and division using “fact families”. This will then lead into the introduction of long division! Music K-4 Due to the pandemic, our school Advent Program looked different this year. PreK4 through 4th Grade Students put on a spectacular virtual Advent Program for our school community on December 18, 2020. The students worked so hard in Music class and it really paid off for the socially distanced performance! We are all so proud of the students’ hard work and dedication.

The Advent Program video was posted on the parish website in December. In case you missed it, here is the video link to view: https://youtu.be/Ae9zxAAGKSs To start out 2021 in Music, students learned the folk tale “Auld Lang Syne”. Many of the kids were surprised that the song's origins were of Scottish descent. Students also completed a “color by music note” New Year’s activity!

STAFF SPOTLIGHTS This week we will spotlight one of our outstanding staff members here at St. Margaret of Scotland School. Ms. Beth Brandy – School Nurse Known to my students as “Ms. Brandy” or “Nurse Beth”, I have proudly served the Keystone Oaks School District and St. Margaret School for over ten years as a certified school nurse. Although I currently divide my time between Keystone Oaks Middle School and St. Margaret of Scotland School, my previous assignments at KO have included Aiken, Myrtle, and Dormont Elementary Schools. I am an Ingram native and have worked in the healthcare industry for over thirty years. My nursing experience includes maternal/childcare, pediatrics, home health care, and three years as the certified school nurse for Shady Side Academy Junior School. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) and a School Nurse Certification (CSN), both from the University of Pittsburgh. I received my Master’s Degree in Child Psychology from Duquesne University. Two things that bring a smile to my face, (besides my students!) are spending time with my grandson and biking all the trails in and around Pittsburgh. I believe the school day is the second most important environment in the lives of our children. As a school nurse at St. Margaret School, my job is to assist in the academic success of all my students by meeting their health needs. An important and vital key to that end is gaining my students’ trust. As the author John Maxwell has said, “A child doesn’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” I continue to look forward to serving my students at St. Margaret School in all aspects of their health, safety, and well-being.

ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

OUR PARISH As this map roughly shows, we are one of the three parishes in the Diocese that are named for the Archangels who are mentioned in the Bible. You will see us often refer to our new name as The Archangel Gabriel Parish Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel. This not only sets us apart from our Archangel neighbors, it also helps lessen the confusion from the former (recently merged) “St. Raphael Parish” in St. Philip Parish Morningside. St. Raphael Church remains open there (about 12 miles from our churches) and is under the new parish name of St. Jude. Confusing? Perhaps. For that reason, we have also added the familiar initials of CGS (Carnegie, Green Tree, Scott) to our website, emails, and Facebook page. Our new The Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel website is StRaphaelCGS.org. See our new email addresses on page 20. Although we will still use the acronyms of SEAS, SMOS, and SSJ to identify our different churches, St. Michael the Archangel Parish we will not be abbreviating our parish name to an acronym. When writing a check, however, feel free to shorten the name to St. Raphael Parish. The banks are currently accepting this shortened name on behalf of our parish.

OUR NEW WEBSITE We have transitioned from CGScatholic.org to StRaphaelCGS.org. We invite you to explore its content. We have streamlined it to make it user-friendly, and have added some new features: Since our livestreaming is encompassing more than just watching the Mass Live, we changed the title of this familiar button to read “Livestream”. Watch Mass there daily, live or prerecorded, and keep an eye on the bulletin for news of other events that may be broadcast there. The picture on the button to register to attend Mass has changed, though it is still in the exact same spot since the sign-up protocol was put into place. Don’t forget to register to attend Mass in person. Be sure to use the quick links to read the Pittsburgh Catholic, register to join the parish, sign up for Flocknote, and much more! Our new In Memoriam section features the published obituaries of our faithful departed. Visit this section to pray for our loved ones and their families. The names will be listed weekly as they are in the bulletin. Our schools are listed towards the top of the page. You will see access to the latest fundraisers for St. Margaret School under this tab. Visit our website to get caught up on the classes about the Creed by Fr. Alek (Wine, Cheese, and the Creed). See page 10 for more information. The bulletin is always available on our website. The online version is great when you wish to enlarge photos (like that adorable baby in last week’s bulletin —yes, it is still online if you missed him), or follow along with the weekend Masses. For daily Mass, click the day of the week under “Today’s Readings”. Tip: if alternate readings are selected at a daily Mass, just scroll to the bottom of the published readings to see a link to the alternate ones.

FACEBOOK & YOU TUBE Find us on Facebook: The Parish of St. Raphael the Archangel [email protected]. Or just click the Facebook logo at the top of our parish website. Our YouTube Channel also has an easy link at the top of our website! See Fr. Alek’s classes there. Class #1 available now.

Many thanks to Fr. Alek for his expertise and creativity in helping to form our new website and creating beautiful graphics and designs for the new parish.

ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

ST. RAPHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

Feast Day: September 29 In 1921 the Church began to celebrate the feast day of St. Raphael on October 24. Due to the revision of the General Roman Calendar in 1969, St. Raphael’s feast day was transferred to September 29 for celebration together with archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Meaning of Raphael: God heals, medicine of God

Attributes of St. Raphael: walking with Tobias; young man carrying a fish; young man carrying a staff; sounding a trumpet

Patron Saint of travelers, healing, the blind, nurses, physicians, medical workers, relationships, young people, matchmakers, shepherds, Christian marriage, and happy meetings.

Birth: beginning of creation Death: never

History: St. Raphael is one of the 3 archangels mentioned in sacred scripture. He is one of the 7 archangels that stand before the throne of God praising the Creator endlessly with hymns. His office is generally accepted by tradition to be that of healing and acts of mercy as God sent him to heal Tobit’s blindness in the Book of Tobit. Raphael confesses to Tobit and Tobiah after they give praise and gratitude for all “Azariah,” the archangel in human form, has done to help the family overcome poverty and illness. Azariah confesses that, "I am the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord" (Tobit 12:15). The book of Tobit is the only book in sacred scripture where Raphael is mentioned by name. You can read the Book of Tobit at: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/tobit/0. As you read the biblical account of Tobit, Tobiah, and Sarah, you discover the above-mentioned attributes and therefore, find the reasons why St. Raphael the Archangel is the patron of travelers, healing, medical professions, marriage, and relationships.

Raphael is also identified with the angel in the gospel of John 5:1-4 who would stir the waters of the pool at Bethesda with healing powers allowing the first person to enter the pool to be healed of infirmity; "An angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water was made whole of whatsoever infirmity he lay under."

Prayer St. Raphael is often invoked as a guide in daily life against evil and sin as he stands close to the throne of God to help.

Holy Archangel Raphael, I entreat you, therefore, standing so close to the throne of God to help me in my struggle against the world, and offering Him our prayers, the flesh, and the devil. I venerate you as God’s special Friend and Messenger. Defend me from all dangers I choose you as my Patron and every occasion of sin. and wish to love and obey you as young Tobias did. Direct me always in the way of peace, safety, and salvation. I consecrate to you my body and soul, Offer my prayers to God as you offered those of Tobias, all my work, and my whole life. so that through your intercession I want you to be my Guide and Counsellor I may obtain the graces necessary for the salvation of my soul. in all the dangerous and difficult problems Remember me and always entreat for me and decisions of my life. before the Face of the Son of God. Remember, dearest Saint Raphael, Help me to love and serve my God faithfully, that the grace of God preserved you to die in His grace, and finally to merit to join you with the good angels in heaven in seeing and praising God forever in heaven. when the proud ones were cast into hell. Amen.
