In an instant, communities can be hit hard by severe weather regardless of what season. While fl ooding took its toll on places a province away near the end of June, around Watrous the rain came but the storm that arrived during the middle of the month was fortunately not even close to what was experienced last year. Coincidentally, the storm last June that brought pow- erful winds, tornadoes, funnel clouds, hail, rain and light- ning throughout the province also happened around the same date as the large amount of rain this year. Environment Canada’s David Phillips said severe weather is not strictly about blizzards and wind chill in Saskatchewan; a litany of crazy conditions can be found during the summer time. “There were more tornadoes in Saskatchewan than there were in Oklahoma,” Phillips said about last year’s events. “They weren’t powerful but there were 33 of them - your record year.” This year, twisters and funnel clouds already have been spotted but it was a wave of rain that dropped through parts of Saskatchewan during the middle of June that drenched everything. According to Environment Canada’s weather data, Watrous received at least 20.6 mm June 14, 1.4 mm June 15 and 8.1 mm June 16. That total comes in at just over an inch but there were reports of more than that falling around the area. Further north, Waskesiu was hit hard- est with 130 mm or above fi ve inches of rain from June 13 The view up above to 15. That area also saw part of Hwy. 2 washed out. PUBLIC NOTICE The Operations and Engineering Division of SaskWater will be treating the Saskatoon Southeast Water Supply System (SSEWS) canal between the Blackstrap and Zelma Reservoirs to control weeds and algae during the 2013 irrigation season. Treatment dates are May 14, May 28, June 11, June 25, July 9, July 23, August 7, August 20 and September 4, 2013. The canal between the Zelma and Dellwood Reservoirs will be treated for the same reason on May 15, May 29, June 12, June 26, July 10, July 24, August 8, August 21 and September 5, 2013. The chemical Magnacide “H” with its active ingredient “Acrolein”, will be noticeable in the water by its offensive odour. The canal flow rate may be lowered during treatment so that less chemical will be required. The chemical will remain active in the canal for approximately 24 hours Cheep thrills after each treatment, and will diminish to non-detectable levels prior to treated Seeing a baby of any kind, be it bird, mammal or reptile, is always a bit of a rush! –– Daniel Bushman/TWM water entering the reservoirs. Area residents are warned that chemically treated water is not to be used for drinking during this 24-hour period. Treated water may also be harmful to the skin, causing irritation to exposed areas. Dosages will be maintained at a level where the water can safely be used for Journeyman & Plunkett irrigation with no damage to field crops.
