Lecture Announcement – Climate Change There will be a lecture at Darbe Mehr on Saturday, September 5th at 12pm after the Shenshai Fravardegan Jashan by Ervad Dr. Jehan Bagli. The title of the talk will be Teachings of Zarathushtra and Its Impact on Climate Change, and will discuss the teachings of Zarathushtra on the protection of ecology, climate condition, and creation at large.

Emission of greenhouse gases has led to major changes in the climate in various parts of the world in general and in Canada in particular. In Alberta there has been a trend of high summer temperatures and low summer precipitation leading to serious drought conditions. The major concern in British Columbia includes snow falls, heat waves, and drought. Ontario, Canada's most populated province, had, in 2010, the second highest greenhouse gas emission in the country. Between 1990 and 2007 Quebec has generated 85.7 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Canada is one of the countries that are significantly contributing to the emission of greenhouse gas and global warming. Present political will has done little to alleviate this greenhouse emission, pollution problems, and climate change. There have been activities among various religious traditions to bring the awareness of the serious nature of environmental changes. The lecture will particularly focus on the teachings of the Prophet towards environment and bring awareness of what the problems are, what is happening around the world, and how we can be prepared to contribute our share to help the more vulnerable strata of the society in times of need. All are welcome to this interesting session.

Sad Passing Away of Professor Erach Munshi With great sorrow the Zoroastrian Association of Greater New York (ZAGNY) reports the passing away of its founding member and first president, Prof. Erach Munshi today morning Saturday, July 25, 2015. Erach played a pivotal role in the early history of ZAGNY. Even before ZAGNY was formed, Erach and a few friends used to organize dinners for Jamshedi Nowroze and Shenshahi Nowroze, inviting every Zoroastrian in the metropolitan area they could find. In 1973, the community organized itself into ZAGNY, and Erach served as the first president for two terms. He played a leading role in the search and acquisition of the property that would become the first Arbab Rustom Guiv Darbe Mehr in North America. As a professor in business administration at St. John’s University, he helped young people and new comers to the area to find jobs. Our deepest condolences go out to Erach’s family and friends, and we wish them strength during this difficult time.

Festival on Parsi Culture In March 2016, New Delhi will host a celebration of Parsi culture with three exhibitions. The festival is being organized by the Ministry of Minority Affairs is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 19, 2016 and will go on to May 29th. One exhibition, “Everlasting Flames”, which has antiquities loaned from 15 museums around the world, will be coming from the UK. It traces the 3000 years of Zoroastrian history through artifacts, silverware, textiles, coins, and manuscripts. The second exhibition, “No Parsi is an Island”, shows Parsi trade with China and the rest of the world. A third exhibition is being planned in IGNCA (Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts) – “Threads of Continuity”. This will be a multi-media exhibition where Parsi life and stories will be told through various media.

Restoration of Artifacts The restoration of a third artifact has been completed and is mounted at the Darbe Mehr. This third piece depicts a hearing before the king, a relief from the door on the North Wall of the Throne Room in Persepolis. The cost of the restoration and mounting of this piece has been made possible through the generous donation of Parviz Ravani in memory of Banoo Khodabakhsh Foulad.

A fourth piece is in the process of being restored and is expected to be completed and mounted shortly. This final piece depicts a king fighting a lion, and its restoration is being made possible through the commitment of Sohrab and Khorshidchehr Khosraviani in memory of Aghdas Delgoshah. ZSO is very grateful and will be issuing tax receipts to the donors.

Lecture Announcement – Fraud and Cybercrime Awareness At the request of Executives of ZSO, a public service lecture has been arranged at the Darbe Mehr on October 18th at 4:30pm. The title of the lecture is 'Mass Marketing Fraud and Cybercrime Awareness'. The lecture is a joint effort of RCMP, the OPP, and the Competition Bureau of Canada. The presentation will elaborate on identity theft and other scams and how to avoid them.

There have been a series of fraud schemes that has recently impacted members of our community and this will be of great assistance to the community as a whole to be aware of these facts. We look forward to a large turnout for this important informative lecture. More information about the lecture will be provided in the next newsletter.

100 Toronto – First Zoroastrian Scout Group 100 Toronto Scout Group's 25th Anniversary Awards & Picnic held on Saturday, July 11th at the Cold Creek Conservation Area in Nobleton (north of Toronto) was thoroughly enjoyed by over 125 scouts, scouters, parents, and wellwishers. Amongst those present were almost all the Founders of 100 Toronto who turned out in full uniform – Noshir Mirza, Noshir Dastoor, Maneck Sattha, Vispi Patel, Freddy Mirza, and Jimmy Mistry (all the way from Mumbai). The weather was great (sunny but not too warm), and after the distribution of the awards to the beavers, cubs, scouts, and venturers for achievements in various scouting proficiencies, all geared up for the picnic. Food was in abundance and in variety to please all palates and appetites. There were activities for the young and the not-so-young (yet daring), including high and low ropes, rock climbing, and jumping castle. There are a lot of folks to thank for the success of the event, but none more than Pearl Chothia for finding this superb location and negotiating with the authorities of the Conservation Area. As one participant wrote in, "By the Grace of everyone and Mazda, another memorable Silver Anniversary event well accomplished. BRAVO."

Now the Group Committee is focusing on the final celebratory event – the 25th Anniversary Patraa nu Bhonu scheduled for Saturday, September 19th. Our Scouter Chefs are amongst the best and they are going to cook up a feast that you will never forget! Details are in the flyer attached to this newsletter. Seating is limited, so please hurry and book your seats.
