QEMAH TO RETURN AT LINGFIELD CHURCHILL GUINEAS Al Shaqab Racing=s (Ire) ( {Ire}), a dual WIN RATED 120 Group 1 winner last year at three, makes her seasonal debut in Saturday=s G3 Chartwell Fillies= S. at Lingfield. Qemah is trained in France by Jean-Claude Rouget, and Al Shaqab=s racing manager Harry Herbert said, "It has always been Jean-Claude's plan to start her off here. There's no suitable race in France and she doesn't have a Group 1 penalty, so it fits in right. The plan is likely to be the [G1] Queen Anne [S. at Royal Ascot] afterwards, all being well." Qemah has winning form over the Queen Anne course and distance, having taken last year=s G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot prior to returning to France to win the G1 Prix Rothschild. She has finished on the board in all eight starts, and was last seen finishing third behind Alice Springs (Ire) ( {Ire}) in the G1 Matron S. at Leopardstown in September.

Churchill after winning Saturday=s G1 2000 Guineas | Racing Post IN TDN AMERICA TODAY GOODBYE KENTUCKY, HELLO MARYLAND Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has been given a performance GI Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) left rating of 120 for his win in Saturday=s G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas by Churchill Downs Tuesday morning and a few hours later was the British Horseracing Authority. The rating is two pounds bedded down in his stall at Pimlico Race Course near Baltimore. below his official rating of 122. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN America. Dominic Gardiner-Hill, Deputy Head of Handicapping for the BHA, said, AGiven that Churchill and [his fourth-placed stablemate] Lancaster Bomber not only represented the best of last year=s 2-year-old form in the Dewhurst and had a much better passage through the race than others, it seems sensible to base the level around them. As such, Churchill has performed to 120 and Lancaster Bomber to 117, with [second-placed] Barney Roy at 118 and [third-placed] Al Wukair at 117. It would be fair to say that neither had the run of the race in the way the O=Brien pair did and it would be no great surprise if both improved on those figures in future.@ The BHA gave Churchill=s stablemate and Sunday=s G1 Qipco 1000 Guineas winner (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) a mark of 116 for that performance. Gardiner-Hill said of the 1000 Guineas, ANot quite so easy to assess using traditional handicapping methods as the 2000 Guineas. cont. p2 TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 2 OF 7 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • 10 MAY, 2017

Fair Eva, a homebred, won last year=s G3 Princess Margaret Juddmonte S. and was beaten as the favourite in both the G2 Lowther S. and G2 Rockfel S. Charlton said he is keen to give the chestnut another chance over a mile, and she holds entries in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas on May 28 and the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot on June 23 over that trip. Churchill Guineas Win Rated 120 cont. from p1 Gardiner-Hill continued, AAfter a discussion with Garry O=Gorman of the Turf Club, we have settled upon a figure of 116 for Winter, which places her behind only Finsceal Beo and in the last 10 years and the equal of Homecoming Queen and . In publishing an official mark of 116 in Ireland, it also puts her on the same [official rating] as Rhododendron, who finished second on Sunday [running to 112+] having had a troubled passage.@ Tuesday marked the first time the BHA published its official performance figures from the prior Saturday=s Class 1 races. This will become the norm, with performance figures from all Class 1 races from the preceding Sunday through to Saturday to be published via the BHA website=s results pages every Tuesday morning. This is separate to the BHA=s posting of official ratings. Richard Wayman, chief operating officer of the BHA, said, AMany racing fans enjoy discussing the merit of performances, particularly following the major races, and the publication of our handicapping team=s performance figures in all Class 1 races will provide an official perspective to add to such debates. Making Fair Eva | Racing Post these figures available will also help with our ongoing efforts to illustrate the general approach adopted by the handicappers to assessing races.@ HATCHFIELD CASE TO CONTINUE The controversial Hatchfield Farm development case in Newmarket is set to continue after London=s high court SCOPE EXCUSE FOR FAIR EVA overturned a stop against the development made by the local government last year, Racing Post reports. Ready for action. Con Marnane and his troops prepare for the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale. | Arqana WEEKLY SALES TICKER by Bill Oppenheim

“Tattersalls’ Guineas Sale in Newmarket was the fourth 2-year-old sale of the year in the U.K., and the results continued to look good. In this sale (2-year-olds only), 35% more horses sold than last year for a 50% rise in the gross, an 11% rise in the average, and about a 6% improvement in the clearance rate from the catalogues. For the four sales combined, the clearance rate from the catalogues improved a massive 9%, from 63% to 72%; the number sold has increased by 23%, and the gross by 24%, while the average edged up a hair. To maintain the average while the number sold and gross increase by nearly a quarter – that’s a strong marketplace. Arqana in Deauville this weekend, Goresbridge in Ireland, and Baden-Baden will finish up the European 2-year-old in training sales by the end of this month.”

ALWAYS DREAMING

ARRIVES AT PIMLICO THE AMERICAN DREAM The first thing we have to say about last Saturday=s GI Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands is that GI Xpressbet Florida Derby winner Always Dreaming, from the first crop by WinStar=s Bodemeister, was the worthy winner. Johnny Velazquez had him in the perfect stalking position all the way around, went to the lead by the half-mile pole, repelled >TDN Rising Star= Battle of Midway (Smart Strike)--who held on gallantly for third--and fellow >Rising Star= Irish War Cry (Curlin) at the quarter pole, and was always the winner from there. GI Kentucky Derby hero Always Dreaming (Bodemeister) arrived at Pimlico Race Course Tuesday morning to begin preparations for the May 20 GI Preakness S. Ginny DePasquale, longtime assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, was on hand to supervise the arrival, which can be viewed here. AIt=s pretty special to see him looking that well. Always Dreaming/Preakness notes cont. Oppenheim cont. AThe main factor in deciding to run is that he is sound and Lookin At Lee, a deep closer by Lookin At Lucky (also by Smart doing good and we think we have a good chance in the Strike) who had finished third in the GI Arkansas Derby, ran on Preakness,@ said Allessandro Sano, son of trainer Antonio Sano, for second, with Battle of Midway third and Arkansas Derby who returned Monday to Miami. AHe doesn=t seem like he ran a winner Classic Empire fourth, having encountered enough mile and a quarter. We are going to take it one race at a time trouble to keep it from being an Empire Maker exacta--since and right now, the Preakness is the main goal.@ Classic Empire is by Pioneerof the Nile, like Bodemeister a son of The winner of the GII Xpressbet Fountain of Youth S., who will Empire Maker. So I think we can shedrow and will resume training Wednesday at Churchill. Scott now officially refer to Empire Maker/Unbridled (also sire of Blasi, assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, said the Unbridled=s Song)/Fappiano as a hot two-turn Classic dirt sire horses would fly to Baltimore Tuesday, May 16, on a Tex Sutton line. = flight. That s probably not just a convenient classifying system; in the case of Always Dreaming, neither his sire nor his dam stayed Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile), fourth in the Derby after a 10 furlongs. Bodemeister definitely did not; he got nine furlongs troubled trip, also walked the shedrow. Norman Casse, assistant all right, as evidenced by his 9 1/2-length demolition job in the to and son of trainer Mark Casse, relayed that the colt=s eye, 2012 GI Arkansas Derby. Oppenheim cont. Bodemeister also went to the head of the class by cumulative Moving up now to No. 3 among 2017 North American earnings by North American second-crop sires (click here), over second-crop sires is Lane=s End=s Union Rags. He had the big $1 million ahead of Union Rags and last year=s Leading North favorite for Friday=s GI Kentucky Oaks in Paradise Woods; she American Freshman Sire, Darby Dan=s Dialed In, in a virtual blew out after a contested lead in dead-heat for second, with Darby the slop, but over the two days, Dan=s other second-crop sire, Union Rags did have two other Shackleford, in fourth. Also over 3-year-olds place in graded $2 million in cumulative progeny stakes at Churchill Downs: the earnings among these sires are: filly Union Strike (previously a Lane=s End=s The Factor, by War Grade I winner of the Del Mar Front, who has woken up lately Debutante S.) ran second in the and is now tied for the lead GII Eight Belles S. on Friday, while among this group by cumulative the colt No Dozing ran second in BTW, with five, along with Dialed Saturday=s GIII Pat Day Mile S., In (Frankel: 8, all in fact GSWs); his third graded placing. and Coolmore Ashford=s Stay Union Rags now has five Thirsty (Bernardini), this group=s Graded Stakes Horses (GSH) this leader by cumulative winners, year; no other North American Bodemeister at WinStar | WinStar photo with 39. Oppenheim cont. applications at that price. Among the second-crop sires, the If you look at the table of North American fourth-crop sires in Darby Dan duo of Dialed In and Shackleford were both $15,000 2017 (click here), Quality Road leads in absolutely every this year. Among the fourth-crop sires, Quality Road at $35,000 category. He also leads in every black-type category on the must qualify as serious value, and Munnings at $25,000 and cumulative North American fourth-crop sire list (click here), Lookin At Lucky at $17,500 seem very attractively priced as well. except for number of Black-Type Winners (BTW); Ashford=s It=s too late in the breeding season now for these results to have Munnings is the runaway leader in that category, with 20. But too much of an immediate practical impact, but if there happen Quality Road is the only sire in this group with four Grade I to be any openings, any breeder still with a mare who merits winners (WinStar=s Super Saver has three, but none since 2015), those levels of stud fees should be on the phone by now. and has 10 GSW (Super Saver 7, Munnings 6). So he is the clear number one. Galileo Guineas Weekend: There is no doubt that Banstead Manor=s Frankel is The Next Big Thing: he=s Galileo=s best son; he was the unbeaten best racehorse of all time; and he=s already the sire of eight Black-Type Winners--every one so far a group winner--and 11 Black-Type Horses, 10 of them Group Horses (click here). He=s already sired 15 horses whose best RPR=s (Racing Post Ratings) are 95+. He=s a phenomenon. But last weekend: he had four runners in the English Guineas, two in each--four unplaced. Frankel may be on the way there--he nearly is there--but that seat is still occupied by his daddy, the one, the only Galileo. On Saturday, Champion 2016 European 2-Year-Old Churchill, by Galileo out of Meow, by Storm Cat out of the top sprinter Airwave, won the G1 English 2000 Guineas; also on Saturday, the 4-year-old filly Seventh Heaven, by Galileo out of La Traviata, by Johannesburg, and a dual Group 1 winner last year of the Irish Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks, and second to Jack Quality Road | Lane=s End Hobbs first time out this year in the G1 Sheema Classic in Dubai, trotted up in the G2 Jockey Club S. at Newmarket. So Saturday This, as we=ve been saying for a while, is a very interesting was Galileo out of the Storm Cat line day. Then on Sunday group of sires. There=s now no doubt that Quality Road is the Galileo and his trainer, Aidan O=Brien, had the one-two in the G1 number one North American F2012 sire. The Ashford duo of English 1000 Guineas, new Group 1 winner Winter, who is out Munnings and Lookin At Lucky are two-three on the cumulative of the Choisir mare Laddies Poker Two, subject of an almighty earnings list, but oh my, spare a thought for Lookin At Lucky. gamble when she won the 2010 Wokingham H. at six furlongs at This year, in 2017, especially after Lookin At Lee=s $400,000 Royal Ascot. Winter got first run on previous Group 1 winner, Derby second, Lookin At Lucky is number two by progeny stablemate and favorite Rhododendron, by Galileo out of earnings, and has 10 Black-Type Horses, six of them Graded, and Halfway to Heaven, by , and who came home second; as of course Lookin At Lee now twice Grade I-placed--but he well as oh, yes, the first three in the G2 Derrinstown Stud Trial doesn=t even have a Black-Type Winner yet this year. Lookin At at Leopardstown, all by Galileo, all trained by Aidan O=Brien. Lucky is tied with Quality Road with six cumulative Grade I Contact Bill Oppenheim at [email protected] (cc Horses, but whereas Quality Road has four Grade I winners, [email protected]). Lookin At Lucky has none. You=ll recall he always scores high on the APEX scale (2.79 A Runner Index), but boy could he use a change of, I don=t know--luck. Bodemeister is undoubtedly way beyond sold out at his CLARIFICATION: >TDN Rising Star= Battle of Midway (Smart $25,000 stud fee for 2017, but you=d be a pretty happy Strike), third in Saturday=s GI Kentucky Derby, is no longer customer right now if you have a mare in foal to him, because owned by Fox Hill Farms, as was written in Tuesday=s >Final that price is going to change. Union Rags was $50,000 this year, Thoughts on the Derby= article. The colt is now owned in so he was fully valued, except that they had over 300 partnership by Don Alberto Stable and WinStar Farm.
