At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re- quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we look upon them in relation to parish membership.

COLLECTION FOR FEB. 23, 2020 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic REGULAR OFFERTORY celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC Loose Cash & Checks $935.00 #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, in which we remember Christ’s time of retreat in the desert between His Baptism and His earthly ministry. It is on Ash Wednesday that we recall our own humility and mortality, and begin a sacrificial season of prayer and fasting. It is 40 days before Holy Thursday (excluding the Sundays in Lent), thus always on a Wednesday. It is a day of fasting (one larger meal, and two small snacks) and abstaining from meat. Forty is a number of preparation, in which scripture uses to show God’s people working towards repentance and salvation. We see this with ’s story, and the Israelites, and Jesus prepar- ing his disciples before he ascends into Heaven. Mothers are also pregnant for 40 weeks.

“Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned.” Psalm 51 This responsorial reminds us of our own mortality and the weakness of our flesh as we enter into the season of penance. We sing this Psalm together at the Ash Wednesday Mass, refocusing our hearts to our own sinfulness, and asking the Lord to help return to His favor. Following the example of the Ninevites, who did penance in sack- cloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and reminds us that life passes away on Earth. We re- member this when we are told "Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall return." Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacra- mental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. The distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages past. Christians who had committed grave faults performed public penance. On Ash Wednesday, the Bishop blessed the hair shirts which they were to wear during the forty days of penance, and sprinkled over them ashes made from the palms from the previous year. Then, while the faithful recited the Seven Penitential Psalms, the penitents were turned out of the church because of their sins -- just as Adam, the first man, was turned out of Paradise because of his disobedience. The penitents did not enter the church again until Maundy Thursday after having won reconciliation by the toil of forty days' penance and sacramental absolution. Later, all Christians, whether public or secret penitents, came to receive ashes out of devotion. In earlier times, the distri- bution of ashes was followed by a penitential procession.

The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that

God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts.

SAINTS IN TRAINING

Formation for young children learning the Faith to become What is Lent?

Lent means “spring.” It is a 40 day liturgical season of penance where we remember Jesus’ time of retreat in the desert. After Jesus was Baptized, He went into the desert to pray and fast in preparation for His upcoming ministry. So every year, we are called to do the same! Lent is cele- brated from Ash Wednesday through the Wednesday of Holy Week. During Lent, we spend 40 days PRAYING, FASTING and GIVING ALMS. We pay special attending to our relation- ship with God, we share with others, and we refocus our own hearts. The priest wears purple as a sign of repentance as we turn back to God. Forty is an important number in scripture—it’s a number that represents PREPARATION. Noah spent 40 days on his ark—the Israelites spent 40 years on the way to the Promised Land—and was king for 40 years. Jesus also spent 40 days with his friends in between the resurrec- tion and ascension. We use these 40 days to prepare for Easter. How do we want to be closer to Jesus and to the Church when we celebrate Christ’s resurrection? Use the Lenten Path to help you this Lent. Think of something each day (praying, sharing, or sacrificing) to help you pre- pare for Easter! SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, March 1: St. Albinus—Abbot and Bishop St. Albinus was born into a noble family in Vannes, France around the year 470. At a young age, he entered the monastery of Tintillant despite the opposition of his parents. His holiness led him to be elected abbot of the monastery when he was only 35 years old. After serving as abbot for 25 years, Albinus was appointed Bishop of Angers. During his reign he do- nated vast sums to the sick and the poor, and he worked to ransom captives who were pressed into slavery by pagan invad- ers. He also conducted two councils to address the problem of incestuous marriages in royal families. Albinus was said to have worked numerous miracles, including one where he prayed in front of a prison for the release of the prisoners inside, and a landslide occurred which destroyed the prison but helped the prisoners break free, convert to Christianity, and re- form their lives. Monday, March 2: St. Agnes of Bohemia—Abbess St. Agnes, the daughter of King Ottokar of Bohemia, was born in Prague on June 20, 1211. Agnes regularly practiced fasting and penances, and she cared for the sick. Throughout her childhood, she was engaged sev- eral times to different political figures as her family attempted to arrange a marriage for her. In 1235, she was expected to marry Emperor Frederick II, but Agnes petitioned Pope Gregory IX and informed him of her vow of virginity. The Holy Father released her from the engagement. Agnes used her wealth to fund the construction of many monasteries and hospitals. In 1236, she had a convent built for the Friars Minor in Prague. She became a at this convent and was made abbess soon after. Tuesday, March 3: St. Cunegundes—Widow St. Cunegundes was born in 957 in Luxembourg, the daughter of Siegfried, the first Count of Luxemburg. She entered into an arranged marriage with St. Henry, the Duke of Bavaria, though she had previously made a vow or virginity and stayed true to her vow throughout the marriage. Upon the death of the Emperor Otho III, Henry was chosen as his successor and Cunegundes was crowned empress in 1014 by Pope Benedict VIII. Cunegundes funded numerous dioceses, monasteries and convents, and she also gave much of her wealth to the poor. Follow- ing the death of her husband, Cunegundes retired to a convent at Kaufungen Abbey where she entered the reli- gious life as a Benedictine nun. The rest of her life was devoted to prayer, labor and caring for the sick.

Wednesday, March 4: St. Peter of Pappacarbone—Abbot and Bishop St. Peter was born to a noble family in Salerno, Italy sometime during the 11th century. As a young man he joined the Benedictine monastery in Cava, Italy and became a . He left the monastery to live as a for a short period, but then returned to the monastic life at the Cluny Abbey from 1062 to 1068. Peter was appointed Bishop of Policastro in 1079, but discovered that he didn’t have the talent for the position, so he returned to the Cava mon- astery where he was named coadjutor abbot. He tried to institute reforms which his considered too harsh, leading him to step away from this position as well. Eventually he was called back to the monastery by the monks and served as abbot for the remainder of his life. During his reign, over 3,000 monks joined the monastery. Thursday, March 5: St. of Cremona—Abbot St. Eusebius was born in Cremona, Italy during the fourth century. As a young man, he traveled to Rome where he befriended St. Jerome. The two traveled to the Holy Land where they became acquainted with Ss. Paula and Eustochium. Eusebius founded a monastery in Bethlehem and served as abbot of the community. In the year 400, he returned to Cremona to raise money for a place for pilgrims to rest. When a dispute arose between Jerome and Origen, Eusebius sided with his friend and helped persuade Pope St. Anastasius to condemn Origen’s writings. Later in his life, Eusebius is believed to have founded the Guadalupe Abbey in Spain and performed the miracle of raising three men from the dead. Friday, March 6: St. Ollegarius—Bishop St. Ollegarius was born to a noble family in Barcelona, Spain in 1060. He joined the Augustinian canons, became prior of St. Aidan’s monastery, and was ordained to the priesthood. He was named Bishop of Barcelona in 1115, but had to be forced by the Holy Father to accept this position. A year later, he was elevated to Archbishop of Tarragona. During his reign he instituted a number of reforms and worked to rebuild Tarragona which had been sacked by Muslim invaders. Ollegarius was named papal legate for preaching a crusade against the Moors of Spain during the first General Council of the Lateran in 1123.

Saturday, March 7: St. Paul the Simple—Hermit St. Paul was born in Egypt around the year 225. He married and worked as a farmer for most of his life. When he was 60 years old, he discovered that his wife had been unfaithful and he left her. He then journeyed into the desert where he found St. Anthony and asked to become a follower. At first Anthony refused, but after persis- tence he decided to subject Paul to various tests to determine his fitness and sincerity, including hard manual labor, late night vigils, and the constant singing of the Psalms. Eventually Paul was accepted into the community and he was considered the ideal monk by St. Anthony, who gave him the title “the simple.” Paul had the ability to read minds, cure the sick, and cast out demons.
