The fellowship program centers aroundrecognition of a need to support faculty development so thatappropriately trained people can be available for emerging programs thatteach human values as part of health professionaleducation. Four major areas are examined in thefellowship reports. The first deals with values, their formation and dimensions; literature andlanguage in relation to value formation and health care; attitudes,feelings, and values in educating a medical student; andobservations on the learning of values in a clinical context. The second areainvolves the study of ethical issues in medicine,international health, philosophy, and law. Interdisciplinary studies is thefocus of the third section of reports. The relations betweenpsychiatry, law, sociology, and health care are exposed. Another reportexamines participation in an experimental program relating humanisticstudies to a premedical curriculum. The initiation of this fellowship.program reflected the Institute's awareness of the need to support faculty development so that appropri- ately trained persons can be available for emerging programs for teaching human values as part of health professional education. To teach effec- tively at the interface of medicine and the humanities requires unusual cross-disciplinary skills, and this is the kind of study that the Insti- tute Fellowships were intended to promote. Persons already qualified in either the health professionsor the humanities were invited to submit proposals for studying a discipline different from, but complementary to, their own. Thus humanists were encouraged to study in a medical or health care setting, while physicians, medical scientists, and other health professionals were encouraged to pursue humanistic studies. Applicants formulated their own- goals, de- signed programs for achieving these goals, and selected the setting in which they felt they could best accomplish their objectives.The tenure of the fellowships varied from individual to individual, butno Fellow received support for more than six months. After completing their studies, the Fellows reported to the Institute their experiences, accomplishments, reflections, and hopes and plans for the future. Although most of the reports appear here in abbreviated form, the enthusiasm of all of the Fellows for their respective undertakings remains fully stated. Their deep commitment to continuing their involve- ment in this new area of study, teaching, and research is clear and con- vincing.Also self-evident in these reports is a remarkable record of personal achievement and professional growth compiled by this firstgroup of Institute Fellows. It has been a personal pleasure for me during the past year tomove through the process of getting acquainted with these men and women, from learning their names as applicants, through working with themas Fellows, to finally coming to know them as persons. Churchill received his formal training in philosophy and religious studies from Southwestern University at Memphis (B.A., Phi Beta Kappa), and in the Divinity School (M.Div., summa cum laude) and the Graduate School (Ph.D.) of Duke University.He has done research and holds strong interest in the philosophy of language, phenomenologi- cal studies, epistemology, and the philosophy of religion. Churchill's doctoral dissertation is an effort to display how critical epistemologi- cal paradigms have held a superordinate position over the conceptual repertoire of modern, Western man, and especially how such theoisies of knowing have shaped contemporary problems in the philosophy of laf.zuage. I dabbled in both until greater “collections” befell me-- in one case, several dozen orchid plants bequeathed by an acquaintance, in the other, the opportunity to direct the residency program in Rehabilitation Medicine. Raising orchids means having the right media, creating the right growing conditions for individual plants, and vigilance against weeds and slugs. I keep records and set goals and evaluate my collection. There are many parallels in teaching and evaluating residents and in the administration of a residency training program. Resident physicians have many demands on their time. I believe they will devote more energy to the learning process if they can see the benefits of devoting time to what I have to teach. In every encounter with a resident, I try to model inquisitiveness, politeness, team management, analytical thinking, and current knowledge. I set the stage for a collegial learning setting, and demonstrate the underlying structure I use to make decisions. As I probe learner knowledge, I allow a healthy level of anxiety into the situation by asking questions and letting my resident struggle a bit for the answer--they have to make a commitment. Then I want to know what process was used to arrive at the answer. Did they use the literature, clinical experience, or ritual? Are they connecting their fund of knowledge with the clinical database? My goals in teaching are not limited to the knowledge domain.

This is an NZAid funded study and it was conducted in partnership with the Tonga Ministry of Education. The Kakala Research Framework, Tongan research ethics and Tongan research tools of Talanoa and Nofo guided the study. The researchers for this project were all Tongans. This was an opportunity to pilot a new way of understanding hardship in Tonga and how education can alleviate this. Findings from the study show that Tongan conceptualisation of education and sustainable livelihoods are broader, fluid and less structured than traditional understanding.

Aim: To make recommendations regarding future educational needs, principles of curricular development, and how the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) should address the need to enhance and promote human sexuality education around the world. Methods: The existing literature was reviewed for sexuality education, curriculum development, learning strategies, educational formats, evaluation of programs, evaluation of students, and faculty development. Main Outcome Measures: The prevailing theme of most publications in this vein is that sexuality education in undergraduate medical education is currently not adequate to prepare students for future practice. Results: We identified components of the principles of attitudes, knowledge, and skills that should be contained in a comprehensive curriculum for undergraduate medical education in human sexuality.
