ABSTRACT China’s retail sector has undertaken tremendous transformation since its opening to foreign investment in 1992. Retail transnational corporations have expanded rapidly in this emerging market. Yet relatively little is known about how they have embedded in the Chinese market and expanded spatially and temporally. China has experienced unprecedented urbanization since the onset of economic reform in 1978. Dramatic land use and land cover (LULC) change and urban expansion have taken place in the past three decades. Detailed time-series analysis of LULC change and urban growth in Chinese cities is still scant. This dissertation focuses on the expansion of foreign hypermarket retailers in China and the urban growth in one Chinese city, Suzhou. This research analyzes the penetration strategy and local embeddedness of foreign hypermarket retailers, examines their spatial inequality and dynamics at different geographical levels, and identifies their location determinants through binary logistic regression models. This study applies random forest classification to multitemporal Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images of Suzhou for LULC change analysis, employs landscape metrics and Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis to investigate urban growth patterns, and develops global and local logistic regression models to identify determinants of urban growth. The results indicate that spatiotemporal expansion of foreign hypermarket retailers has been largely dictated by the gradual liberalization policy of the Chinese government. Their local embeddedness has been impacted by both home and host economies. Relative gaps in foreign hypermarkets among three macro regions are narrowing while absolute gaps are widening. Provincial foreign hypermarket distribution has shown significant clustering in the Yangtze River Delta since 2005. Their distribution in Shanghai has changed from dispersion to intensified clustering and shown a clear trend of suburbanization. This study confirms that the random forest algorithm can effectively classify the heterogeneous landscape in Suzhou and LULC change has accelerated from 1986 to 2008. Three urban growth types, edge-expansion, infilling, and leapfrog are identified. Compared with the global model, the geographically weighted logistic regression model has overall better goodness-of-fit and provides more insights to spatial variations of the influence of underlying     Consumer-Citizens of China This book presents a comprehensive examination of Chinese consumer behaviour and challenges the previously dichotomous interpretation of the consumption of Western and non-Western brands in China. The dominant position is that Chinese consumers are driven by a desire to imitate the lifestyles of Westerners and thereby advance their social standing locally. The alternative is that consumers reject Western brands as a symbolic gesture of loyalty to their nation-state. Drawing from survey responses and in-depth interviews with Chinese consum- ers in both rural and urban areas, Kelly Tian and Lily Dong find that consumers situ- ate Western brands within select historical moments. This embellishment attaches historical meanings to Western brands in ways that render them useful in assert- ing preferred visions of the future China. One typical example is its advocacy of China’s “peaceful rise” theory. Under this theory, his government seemed to position itself to sweep away the “China threat” theory externally and to create an environment conducive to economic development over the opposition of hard-liners internally. This was supposed to serve as a platform for promoting omnidirectional diplomacy, mainly for the purpose of spurring Chinese economic development. However, the government’s new policy line has been wavering in practice and, despite Jiang Zemin’s retirement from public life, a new era has yet to arrive. As it has in the past, China’s foreign policy stresses peace in the international arena. However, the biggest obstacle standing in the way of China’s peaceful rise is the Taiwan issue. Taiwan’s President Chen Shui-bian was reelected on a platform of a national referendum to adopt a new constitution. China views a new constitution, if adopted, as tantamount to independence from the mainland and warned that it would not rule out the use of force to prevent that from happening. It may be said that China is seeking effective measures to curb the growing movement within Taiwan that is attempting a process of “reverse Sinocization” to establish a Taiwanese identity.

    A Nationwide Survey of Privatized Firms in China Yan Guo, Jie Gan, and Chenggang Xu *1 This descriptive study is based on a nationwide survey of privatization in China. Between 1995 and 2005, close to 100,000 firms with 11.4 trillion RMB in assets were privatized in China. This privatization process encompassed two-thirds of state-owned enterprises and state assets. Privatization in China has created concentrated private ownership and greatly changed corporate governance. After privatization, the state has withdrawn from firms’ daily decision making. Soft budget constraints have been substantially hardened. Firms have become more efficient and more profitable. Introduction Privatizing state-owned enterprises (SOEs) is a major step in transforming centralized economies into market economies. By far the largest privatization in history has been the privatization of SOEs in China. This process started on a large scale in the 1990s. Between 1995 and 2005, close to 100,000 firms with 11.4 trillion RMB worth of assets were privatized, encompassing two-thirds of China’s SOEs and state assets. As a result, the share of the state sector in the Chinese economy is now similar to that of some Western European economies. Should cultural goods be treated just like other commodities or should they be protected for the sake of cultural diversity? This article explores the rationale of the cultural exception strategy underlying the discourse of free trade negotiation, with particular attention to the case of China's cultural industries, in which cultural goods and products have received special treatment compared to other commodities. By analyzing the specific commitment made by China in WTO agreements, and framing up the measures that have been utilized by Chinese policymakers to promote cultural industries, this study addresses two major questions: how did the Chinese government construct and adjust its cultural industrial polices in the face of WTO entry and free-trade negotiation? And what factors have prompted the Chinese government to fashion its cultural industrial policy into its current shape? The result of the research shows that China has taken a paradoxical position with regard to the cultural industries: on one hand, the Chinese government has pursued ambitious policies to support the development of cultural ii industries as part of a more general interest in promoting economic growth.
