    Robin in context Introduction Robin produced some 115 compositions, among them a symphony, a violin concerto, a ballet, a masque, an opera, two oratorios, chamber music, pieces for piano and for organ, songs and choral works, both small- and large-scale. However, in addition to being the composer’s favourite and most personal genre, the songs for solo voice and piano are Robin’s largest and most condensed genre. These compositions will now be considered here within the context of early twentieth century English music and later through critical analysis. By the time Robin commenced song composition, a school of English song was well established through the work and compositions of such ‘main’ composers as Parry, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Gurney, Warlock and Finzi. However, in the contextualisation of Robin’s songs, other aspects need to be considered in addition to the main composers of song. These include the existence of a twentieth century English musical renaissance and its main composers; Robin’s studies at the Royal College of Music; contemporary composition students at the RCM; the ‘organ loft’ song composers; the friendship with Balfour Gardiner; and the development of music publishing, the British Broadcasting Company (subsequently, Corporation), musical education in schools and amateur music-making (including the many local musical festivals throughout the country). 1 The twentieth-century English musical renaissance Howes (1966) and Hughes/Stradling (1993) suggest and have proven the existence of a twentieth century ‘English musical renaissance’. Having argued the necessity for such a phenomenon, these writers explain its development, including a revival in the music of the Tudors and Bach, and a systematic preservation of and belief in English folksong.

He has given Howard concerts both at home and abroad and has appeared at major festivals as a soloist, accompanist and chamber-music player. He has made several recordings and received much critical acclaim for his recording of piano music by Lennox Berkeley. His most FERGUSON recent release of piano music and songs by Robin Milford was Editor’s Choice in Gramophone and is available on Toccata Classics. He played on two recordings by British composers released in 2006, Piano Trios by Arthur Butterworth and Sonatas for Piano Sonata in F minor violin, viola, cello and piano by Arnold Cooke, in which he was joined by Suzanne Stanzeleit, Morgan Goff and Raphael Wallfisch.     Robin’s Life and Temperament INTRODUCTION This is a sad story of a man with extreme sensitivity, wonderful musicianship, imagination, integrity and energy. Robin Milford was a meticulous individual, and a person of great kindness with a well-developed sense of humour. A testimony to these personal qualities lies in the fact that Milford’s friends were numerous and included many mainstream musician and composers, both professional and amateur. Members of this mainly London-based circle of friends included composers Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, R O Morris, Henry Ley, Balfour Gardiner, Peter Warlock and Gerald Finzi. There were well-known professionals in other music disciplines such as the conductor, Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Hugh Allen, the Director of the Royal College of Music, the organist Richard Latham, the viola player Jean Stewart, and singers including John Goss and Marion Milford. And there were musical friends such as the grandchildren of Sir John Stainer. The influence of these people, especially Gerald Finzi, is evident in Milford’s compositions and in his teaching. Their friendship was manifested through their financial aid to him, their encouragement of Milford’s writing, their performances and publication of his compositions and their care for the composer during the difficult times in his life. Close friends also included Lawrence and Theresa Whistler, C S Lewis, Anne Ridler – the poet and Milford’s cousin - and Charles Williams. Whilst Milford was certainly a highly sensitive, insecure, somewhat depressive individual with a low level of self-esteem, these traits did not make up the complete man, as some people have asserted.

  • Humphrey Milford Was Later Knighted for His Work
    Robin Milford was born in Oxford on 22nd January, 1903, to cultured parents, Humphrey and Martha Milford (Humphrey Milford was later knighted for his work with the Oxford University Press from 1900 to 1945, and founded the Music Department of the OUP in 1923). Having attended preparatory school at West Downs (near Winchester) and Rugby, Milford (a nervous and insecure young man) gained a place at the Royal College of Music in 1921 to study with R. O. Morris, Henry Ley, Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Milford’s output suggests three distinct periods of style and influence (the 1920s; the 1930s; and the 1940s and 1950s). The 1920s can be viewed in terms of ‘youthful expectation and apprenticeship’ with the works of this period clearly demonstrating a keen sense of creativity, imagination and craftsmanship (employing a cross-style influenced by the Parry/Stanford school and English folk-song). The first of Milford’s compositions date from the early years of this decade when, through the encouragement of Vaughan Williams, Milford directed two family concerts of his works (the second of which included the children’s opera The Shoemaker, pre-1924) . It was at these that Milford met Kirstie Newsom (governess to the grand-daughters of Sir John Stainer). Kirstie was an able viola player and singer with a fine voice and, along with Gerald Finzi, became an important musical mentor. Marriage in 1927 gave the composer much needed emotional stability. The Shoemaker shows the composer’s already developed ability and interest in writing serious works for children (involving distinctive recitative, aria, carols, two- part choruses with antiphonal answering, and dances), thus anticipating some of the ideas of Benjamin Britten (the earlier Three Sea Pictures and A Fairy Revel for piano, 1 both dating from 1924, were also written for children).

Like Vaughan-Williams, Herbert Howells was born in Gloucestershire but into very different circumstances with his father having to file for bankruptcy when Herbert was 12. He was financially assisted by a music loving member of the aristocracy and in 1905 began organ lessons with Herbert Brewer, organist of Gloucester Cathedral. In September 1910 Howells was not only present at the premiere of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis for string orchestra at the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester, he sat next to Vaughan Williams who shared his score of The Dream of Gerontius (1900) that was conducted by the English composer Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) in the second part of the program.
