Seda-Irizarry, Ph.D. Email: [email protected] Office: 9.63.10 NB Office Telephone: 212-393-6425 Office Hours: Tu-Th: 2:00-3:00 pm or by appointment A) Overview: This course exposes students to one of the most sophisticated, yet misunderstood and marginalized, theories of social science. Focus will be on the contributions of the thinker who, perhaps better than anybody else, appropriated and critiqued a whole tradition of socio-economic analysis, which included thinkers such as William Petty, Francois Quesnay, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Thomas Malthus, and John Stuart Mill. We are referring to Karl Marx. Marx is one of those figures from the history of thought whose contributions had been considered by many as redundant, inconsistent, simply outdated, and even dangerous. Still, his thought has ferociously knocked at the door once again in the face of capitalisms’ problems. The purpose of this course is to directly read Marx’s mature theorizations about how capital works to hopefully get a grasp of an understanding of capitalism as a system which suffers from recurrent crises, instabilities, business cycles and uneven development — all of them characteristics that mainstream economic theory tends to consider as secondary compared to the harmonious arrangement that is said to prevail in a market economy that is supposed to deliver the goods while providing the basis for a democratic political system. In this class we will mainly focus on Marx’s magnum opus, Volume 1 of Capital, and we will also read some excerpts from Volumes 2 and 3. At the same time we will occasionally make a comparison between Marx’s contributions and other economic theories, such as the Keynesian and Neoclassical. Finally, we will draw on developments by other theorists who have tried to refine, extend, and critique Marx’s thought. B) Learning Objectives: 1. Understand how capitalism is different from other ways of organizing the production and distribution of goods and services. 2. Comprehend why under capitalism extreme wealth and extreme poverty co-exist. 3. Have a general idea as to why crises are inherent to the system. 4. Development of class analysis to grasp political and economic tensions and their potential resolutions. 5. Ability to see how the profit criterion shapes societal outcomes in contradictory ways. 1 C) Texts (* means required) Marx, K., Capital, Volume I, New York: Vintage Books, 1977 or 1992. * Complementary Texts Fine, B. Massachusetts: MIT Press C) Course Requirements: 1) Notebook for Readings: Apart from the usual notes that students take during the course of the lecture, there will be a requirement of a second, separate notebook. The purpose is to have students take notes while they read Capital. They are expected to copy down quotes (sometimes entire paragraphs) and make annotations to demonstrate that they are reading and struggling with the text (4-5 hours of reading are expected per week). The notes are expected to be scanned/photographed and uploaded to Blackboard on a weekly basis. This will count for 10% of your grade. 2) Homework and Quiz Assignments: A total of 6 assignments will be distributed during the semester, either a quiz or a homework. At the end I will count only the top 5 grades. This will account for 25% of the grade. 3) Class Participation and Attendance: Students are expected to come to class and actively participate after reading the assigned material. This will not be a course with me doing all the talking! Attendance is compulsory. This will account for 15% of the grade. (10% participation + 5% attendance). 4) One midterm + One Final Exam: Exams will be in essay form and will be take-home. If you want to write a final paper instead of taking final exam, you have to let me know by the date of the midterm exam so that we can discuss potential topics. Each exam will be 25% of the grade. 5) Extra Credit: Throughout the semester there will be a series of talks at community hour. For each talk you attend you will receive 1 percentage point of your final grade. The maximum amount of points you can accumulate for extra credit is 3. The schedule for this semester will be announced soon. D) Academic Honesty: All written work submitted must be composed by you and not copied from another source. Any wording taken from another source must be put in quotation marks with the source cited. Plagiarism -- the use of someone else's writing without citing the source – will result of a grade of F on that exam or paper. Students should be cognizant of John Jay’s policy on academic honesty. His Bolsheviks used the chaotic and incomplete nature of the French Revolution as a guide - they believed that in order for a communist revolution to succeed, it would need firm leadership from a small group of party leaders – a very different vision from Karl Marx. So, in some ways, Lenin was like Robin Hood – taking from the rich and giving to the poor.

The Significance and Shortcomings of Karl Marx Abstract In this essay I explain both why Karl Marx remains an important thinker and why he is in some respects inadequate. I focus on the central issue of 'materialism vs. idealism,' and briefly explore ways in which contemporary intellectuals still haven't assimilated the insights of historical materialism. In the last section of the paper I examine the greatest weakness of Marxism, its theory of proletarian revolution, and propose an alternative conceptualization that both updates the theory for the twenty-first century and is more faithful to historical materialism than Marx's own conception was.     Jonathan Levy Capital as Process and the History of Capitalism In the wake of the Great Recession, a new cycle of scholarship opened on the history of American capitalism. This occurred, however, without much specification of the subject at hand. In this essay, I offer a conceptualization of capitalism, by focus- ing on its root—capital. Much historical writing has treated capital as a physical factor of production. Against such a “mate- rialist” capital concept, I define capital as a pecuniary process of forward-looking valuation, associated with investment. Engag- ing recent work across literatures, I try to show how this con- ceptualization of capital and capitalism helps illuminate many core dynamics of modern economic life. Keywords: capitalism, capital theory, economic thought, finance, Industrial Revolution, Keynes, money, slavery, Veblen ecently, the so-called new history of capitalism has helped bring Reconomic life back closer to the center of the professional historical agenda. But what further point might it now serve—especially for schol- ars toiling in the fields of business and economic history all the while independent of historiographical fashion and trend?     Crisis, Revolution, and the Meaning of Progress: The Poverty of Philosophy and its Contemporary Relevance Michael Joseph Roberto Proudhon and Marx ABSTRACT: In 1847, Marx wrote The Poverty of Philosophy, his polemical response to Pierre Joseph Proudhon’s System of Economical Contradictions Or, The Philosophy of Poverty, published a year earlier. Marx and Proudhon were the principal antagonists in the struggle for influence and control of the emerging European workers movement then fueled by the first great crisis of modern capitalism. While Marx propagated communist revolution as a solution to the crisis, Proudhon sought to preserve “good capitalism” by attempting to formulate a new political economy that would reconcile contradictions of capitalist exchange by means of reciprocal agreements and transactions; in a word, mutualism. The Left must distinguish between revolutionary Marxist solutions and variations of the New Proudhonism. While Marxism holds the potential for revolutionary, socialist transformation and renewed social progress, the New Proudhonism seeks to save “good capitalism” – ironically and tragically, carrying with it the plausibility of a more coercive and barbarous system.

I have found the most startling aspect of your manifesto to be its complete disregard for democracy. Your manifesto is a vitriolic attack on the iniquities of capitalism and offers communism as the sole alternative. Yet, the modern era, with its emphasis on human rights, has obviated the totalitarian nature that your essay suggests. The horrors of starvation and genocide in the Soviet Union, Cambodia , Red China and North Korea have made people wary of anything that reeks of communism.

Marxism and the Solidarity Economy: Toward a New Theory of Revolution Abstract In the twenty-first century, it is time that Marxists updated the conception of socialist revolution they have inherited from Marx, Engels, and Lenin. Slogans about the “dictatorship of the proletariat” “smashing the capitalist state” and carrying out a social revolution from the commanding heights of a reconstituted state are completely obsolete. In this article I propose a reconceptualization that accomplishes several purposes: first, it explains the logical and empirical problems with Marx’s classical theory of revolution; second, it revises the classical theory to make it, for the first time, logically consistent with the premises of historical materialism; third, it provides a (Marxist) theoretical grounding for activism in the solidarity economy, and thus partially reconciles Marxism with anarchism; fourth, it accounts for the long-term failure of all attempts at socialist revolution so far.
