Selling Hershey
05_979074 ch01.qxp 6/22/06 11:06 AM Page 3 1 SELLING HERSHEY A Business Fable for Our Times I think what makes a good CEO today is what will always make a good CEO and what has in the past: strong values, great personal integrity, and a willingness to make the tough calls. But it certainly requires an openness and transparency with the multiple constituents, whether it be shareholders, the board, employees, customers, or suppliers. And those characteristics don’t have a shelf life in terms of when it’s good or not good to apply them. —Rick Lenny, CEO, Hershey Foods Corporation1 Trouble in Utopia July 25, 2002, was a day like any other in the picture-perfect town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, home of the world-famous Hershey bar.2 Tourists strolled Chocolate Avenue, gawking at streetlights shaped like Hershey Kisses and shopping for candy-themed souvenirs at the dozens of gift shops. Bedazzled children and obliging parents lined up for tours of Hershey’s Chocolate World and squealed with delight onCOPYRIGHTED the ten roller coasters at MATERIALnearby Hersheypark. Those with more sedentary tastes relished a whipped cocoa bath or choco- late hydrotherapy at the Hotel Hershey’s pricey spa, or simply savored the sweet aromas from the factory whose assembly lines generated a nonstop supply of Mr. Goodbars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and Kit Kat Bars. All these pleasures had one thing that united them even more than their chocolate flavor: the steady 3 05_979074 ch01.qxp 6/22/06 11:06 AM Page 4 4 THE TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE stream of income they produced for Hershey’s twelve thousand res- idents, nearly all of whom had a connection to the company after which their town was named. -
Hershey – a Model Town
One Man’s Vision HERSHEY A Model Town Planning the Model Town “A Model Town, a modern factory, a sub- stantial business-these are the realiza- tions of one businessman s dreams.*” Milton Hershey’s chocolate company was ten years old by the time the new factory was completed in 1904. The chocolate business grew out of Mr. Hershey’s very success- ful Lancaster, Pennsylvania caramel company. While attending the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Milton Hershey watched a demonstration of German choco- late-making equipment. Mindful of the popularity of his chocolate flavored caramels, Mr. Hershey purchased the machinery and began manufacturing cocoa and chocolate confections. In 1900 he sold his Lancaster caramel compa- ny in order to concentrate exclusively on his flourishing chocolate business. By 1901 Milton Hershey’s chocolate business had outgrown his original factory in Lancaster. Mr. Hershey considered sites in Lancaster, Baltimore, New Jersey and New York for his new factory. In the end, however, he decided to located the factory in the countryside and chose his birthplace, Derry Township. *Joseph Solomon, THE BUSINESS WORLD, June 1903 Front Cover: Chocolate Avenue, Hershey’s main thor- oughfare. ca. 1920-1930 Left: Hershey Quick Lunch, adjoining the Cocoa House, offered luncheonette style meals. ca. 1915 Above: An aerial view of Hershey Park and its wide variety of amusements. 1915 Right: Laying the foundation of the chocolate factory. 1903 Planning the Model Town “The location chosen for the new town is an admirable one.*” Milton Hershey picked rural Derry Township against the advice of friends and business associates. -

That I had taken gifts divine, The Breath of life and manhood fine, And tried to use them now and then In service for my fellowman. I'd hate to think when life is through That I had lived my round of years A useless time that leaves behind No record in its vale of tears; That I had wasted all my days By treading only selfish ways And that this world would be the same If it had never heard my name. I'd like to think when life is done That here and there, there shall remain A happier spot which might have not Existed had I toiled for gain, That someone's cheery voice and smile Shall prove that I had been worthwhile That I had paid with something fine, My debt to God for life divine. -

JEFFRIES JOHN SNYDER Hershey Rotary Club Presentation By Gilbert Nurick October 3, 1983 Such a generous introduction compels me, in all candor, to acknowledge that some people regard me in lower esteem. Early in my career, I was asked to represent a group who wanted to start a second taxicab service in Altoona to break the Yellow Cab monopoly up there. I gladly accepted the challenge. In those days you had to apply to the Public Service Commission, now known as the "Pennsylvania Public utility Commission", for operating authority. It was a real hard fight. As happens to so many matters I handle, I lost. About three weeks later I had occasion to go to Altoona on business. Those days you traveled by rail. There was frequent rail service, believe it or not. I got off the station in Altoona and hailed a cab to go up to the Penn Alto Hotel. I thought I'd kid the driver en route and I asked him, "Wasn't there supposed to be another cab company here, American Cab Company?" He replied, "Oh, they tried. 1I I said, IIWhat happened?" He responded, liThe PSC turned them down. -
