Climbing and other journals and photograph albums, 1891-1930, of Arthur Walker Russell, W.S. (1873-1967).

Arthur Walker Russell was the son of Arthur Walker, Banker, of Cupar, Fife. He was admitted W.S. in 1899 and married Barbara Stuart in 1903. He served as a Captain in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the First World War. Russell was first Law Agent of the National Trust for Scotland and involved in the Trust’s purchase of Glencoe.

Arthur W. Russell was a keen climber and hill-walker who spent much of his leisure time in the Scottish mountains. He joined the Scottish Mountaineering Club in 1896 acting as Librarian from 1910-1918 and Vice President from 1923-1925. His journals and photograph albums form a meticulously kept record of his many mountaineering and hill walking expeditions as well as holidays in Scotland and Italy.
