The event started 31 years ago in the backyard of Bill and Sharon Blakeman. Bill, who’s from Vermont, and Sharon were digging up their backyard to install a swing set for their children and, before laying the new sod, they hosted a New England-style clambake for their neighbours. The event was such a success that there were requests for another clambake the following year. To protect the Blakeman’s lawn the clambake moved to the old Brighton Beach and, with one blip, it’s been held there every year since. Residents enjoy corn, clams, baked beans, and potluck contributions while greeting new neighbours and renewing old acquaintances. In addition to the great food and company, we will have entertainment again this year. Russell Levia, who is well known to Southside students and

Public Meeting On Design Of Renovated Community Centre By Michael Jenkin

n Monday, September 8, the City of Ottawa and OSCA will be holding a public meeting to review the final design proposal for Othe renovated and expanded community centre. The meeting will take place between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the Firehall, 260 Sunnyside Avenue. Like the previous public meeting held at the end of June, which showcased three design options, this meeting will be in the form of an open house where you can go and view the designs, ask questions of the architects and City officials and write up and submit comments. There will also be a full presentation of the design and an explanation of its features at 7:00 p.m. The joint City and OSCA design committee has been working steadily over the summer to come up with a final interior layout and floor plan and a final exterior design. It is no easy task squeezing in every needed feature and facility on a very tight capital budget and we are having to be both creative and tough in our design decisions. As you can see from the architects’ sketch of the new addition (above, below, to the right, to the left) seen from the street level, we have a striking design proposal emerging and we think you will like it. Nevertheless, the purpose of the meeting is to get your views on the final design, what you think needs to be changed or modified, and what you think we missed in terms of design features. Please turn up on September 8th as this will be the last opportunity to make your views known before the design is finalized. For those of you who can’t make Monday’s meeting, copies of the final design’s floor plans and the exterior elevations will be available on the OSCA website (www.oldottawasouth.ca) under the “What’s Hot” section on upper left hand corner of the main page. The site will also provide a direct link so you can submit any comments you may have to officials at the City via e-mail. The deadline for making final comments will be posted on the site, but will be no later than mid- September. ’ve had the pleasure of working at the Ottawa South Community Centre for the last 15 years Ibut starting in September I will be moving to the Glebe Community Centre. The move is supposed to be for 12 months but who knows what can happen in a year. There are so many mixed emotions as I write this. I don’t know if I should say goodbye or say see you next year. This move was not my choice as I was looking forward to having input into the future of the Firehall as the City of Ottawa and OSCA work out details of a possible renovation. But that opportunity was taken away by City management who thought a move for a year would be good for my career development. The decision came down in March. I haven’t shared the news with many because I’ve struggled to deal with it and was hoping there would be a change of heart on management’s part but that is not likely to happen. he lower section of the water play area at Brewer Park should be renovated this fall. This is likely to be the Tlast act of the Rotary joint venture, which has been fundraising for, and doing work at Brewer for the last several years. The water area renovation has been widely anticipated in the community and in a show of support the OSCA Board voted to contribute $1000 to the approximately $100 000 budget of the project. Plans are still being finalized, but should be largely as indicated below. The upper water play area with three water sprays and the popular water cannon will be left as it is. The slide will remain, but a source of water to keep it wet will be provided. In the lower area there will be two small sprays or geysers for toddlers, and two much more powerful ones for larger children. Sprays will follow a series of computer programmed patterns turning on and off. The center of the play area will be a “bucket dump” in which a post mounted system of buckets are filled up then suddenly drop the water on children below. All will be controlled by a railway style activator post. An accessible deck area with several chairs will be created over the small grassy area on the east side. If there is enough money two new benches will also be added. The work is tentatively scheduled for September and should take four to six weeks.

The Best Pie Ever! By Natasha Kyssa

ummer has arrived and an abundance of fresh and local foods are now available from various farmer’s markets. The warmer months are a Stime when we must truly take advantage of the wide selection of local produce, as some of the fruits and vegetables are only around for a very short time. Summertime is also perfect for preparing simple and lighter meals made from seasonal offerings at their freshest. There’s nothing quite like biting into a fresh plum or peach in peak season. Harvest season is also time for preparing scrumptious pies and tarts made from local fresh produce. The SimplyRaw Festival, sponsored by the Table Vegetarian Restaurant, is a great example of how local, seasonal and raw foods can bring together a Rev Dr. James Ulrich community. There was such a positive response at last year’s outdoor festival that SimplyRaw is extending it to two full days this summer. The 2008 SimplyRaw Festival will feature internationally renowned speakers including Brian Clement, Director of Hippocrates Institute; Victoria Boutenko, author of Green For Life; Lalita Salas, Director of The Ann Wigmore Institute; Matt Monarch; Dorit; Angela Stokes; locals Natasha & Mark, of SimplyRaw and many others. This non-profit FREE admission event will also include exciting food demos, delicious edibles, live music, entertainment, local crafts, children’s activities, yoga, raw lifestyle/ eco friendly films and much more for the whole family to enjoy together. The highlight of the festival will no doubt again be the fabulous Raw Pie Contest. So what exactly is a raw pie? Rather than the traditional lard, white flour and refined sugar, raw vegan pies are created with fresh, wholesome and flavorful ingredients. Crusts are made from nuts, seeds and dried fruit and the fillings are usually prepared from fruit and various natural seasonings. Every bite is packed with nutrition. And so very delicious. Last year’s event attracted a record 30 pie entries. The Pie Contest is open to everyone, with the focus on raw, vegan, local and sustainable ingredients. A team of celebrity judges including Ron Eade (food editor of Ottawa Citizen); Leanne Cusack (CTV News), Brigitte Gall (Me, My House & I), Robert Fife (CTV News), Clive Doucet (Ottawa City Councillor), Paul Dewer (Member of Parliament), Stu Mills (CBC radio), and others, will select the winning pies. Emcee for this year’s event is Adrian Harewood from CBC’s All in a Day. The first prize is a 9-tray Excalibur Dehydrator and the winning recipe will be featured in the local newspaper. Everyone is a winner at this fun community contest. Organizers are now taking entries, so be sure to register now as spaces are limited! The SimplyRaw Festival takes place at Central Park on Saturday, Sept. 6 AND Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 from 10am to 5pm each day. It is a non-profit FREE admission event organized by dedicated raw vegan husband & wife team Natasha Kyssa & Mark Faul –owners of SimplyRaw. The weekend will also feature the Raw Lifestyle Film Festival on the evenings of Friday, Sept 5 and Saturday Sept. 6. David Chernushenko’s film Be the Change will be viewed on Saturday evening. To make it even more indulgent, SimplyRaw has added an additional “Rawsome Dessert” contest on Sunday. Entries for both contests are now being accepted. Come out, bring your blanket, taste some pie and enjoy this free SimplyRaw, Simply Delicious community event!

BACKYARD NATURALIST A Mighty Oak Tree by Linda Burr

t the end of Brighton Street, in Brighton Park, there stands Aan old oak tree. Its massive trunk sweeps up to the long horizontal branches that offer shelter to all who pass beneath it. Its size alone indicates that it’s an old tree. It’s a bur oak (sometimes spelled burr oak), and it’s one of my favourite trees, if for no other reason than we share the same name. As one of the oldest residents of our community, this tree deserves our respect and admiration. A tree inspector from the City tells me that this tree is probably about 100 years old, but could be anywhere from 80 to 120 years old. This means that the tree was planted (or started growing on its own) just about the time the first homes were being built in Old Ottawa South. Bur oaks grow best on rich, deep soil near waterways, and they prefer to grow in the open, not in the dense forest. They have long taproots, so they can withstand periods of drought. Well, I’m very pleased to make her acquaintance.” Over the years she received many fan letters, which made her and her literary agent very happy. But she also stirred up more than her share of controversy in the pages of OSCAR. Some objected to the suggestion of a political stance. Others accused her of using her column to score personal vendettas. And still others groused what kind of newspaper would publish a column by a dog anyway. In addition to her love for literary and lyric allusions, Zoscha developed her own vocabulary to describe the world around her. Humans were always “humanoids” – although I don’t know why. Children began as “lumps” and evolved into “pups.” They attended the “pup kennel” on Hopewell Avenue. Rights for use of the property were complicated by the fact that it was leased by Texaco and then sublet to the owner of the gas station. By the time of the move to this location, the business was owned by David and Walter Cutts while son Garry and son- in-law Joe Cooney were then working there. By the mid 1970s, David and Walter had retired and Garry and Joe became the owners and they attempted to purchase the property from Mr. Brulé. The lease and sublease arrangement created complications in negotiating the property purchase and a new sales arrangement with Texaco. Eventually, the purchase of the property was successful. One good example of the club’s success last year was Shooting Stars’s Major Bantam team which played 49 games during the 2007-08 season, posting a winning record of 29- 20. The talented team won silver medals at tournaments in Hamilton and Barrie and made the semi-finals at tourneys in Kingston and Barrhaven. At the provincials, the girls were undefeated in round robin play before losing a very close game by four points in the quarter-finals to the eventual gold medal winners. The team achieved a ranking of 33rd in Ontario, out of 88 teams “Our team overcame a number of injuries to be competitive in every single game we played in and our motto was ‘never give up!’, said Coach Bruce Stedman, an Ottawa South resident. Overall, the club’s talent is also reflected in the number of players and coaches it placed on three regional all-star teams. Stars Eliza Bulchak-Heely (Ottawa South), Katie Armstrong (Ottawa South), Hannah Rochon, Ali Czich (Ottawa South), & Darby Thatcher played for Stars Coach Laura Bond on the Bantam all-star team while Kim Yeldon, Clare Murphy, Emma Legallais, Amber Stewart Burton and Meagan Cork played for Coach Bond and fellow Stars Coach Jeremy Sims on the Juvenile all-stars. Ottawa South’s Paul Armstrong, the club’s technical director, oversees the coaching crew for the Shooting Stars. Armstrong is well-qualified for the job since he is the former head coach of the men’s and women’s teams. Players coming out for the competitive teams should keep an eye on the club’s website, www.ottawashootingstars.com, for the tryout schedule for its competitive teams. As well, registration forms can be downloaded from the site and mailed in to avoid the line-ups on registration night. Inquiries to Jack Aubry, 613-232-7431 or jackaubry@ rogers.com. This 4013 x 3010 pixel mosaic of the Old Ottawa South Community Firehall was made by Tom Alfoldi by using 2500 little photo tiles. Each tile is a tiny version of an original full-sized portrait --as seen directly below-- of a Firehall Playgroup patron or of a picture taken at one of the summer or winter OSCA festivals. The special mosaicking program places the tiny photos in a way so as to cumulatively mimic a target picture. In this case a straightforward photo of the Firehall -- seen at the bottom.
