In December 2003, Durham Regional Po- lice welcomed a new member to its en- forcement team. That was when they pur- chased Air1, a Bell Jet Ranger 206 heli- copter to help enhance service to the community.

Equipped with some of the latest technolo- gy, including a Wescam infra-red camera, a Nightsun 30 million candle power search- light, a DVD burner and video recorder, and a mobile data recorder, Air1 respond- ed to 464 calls in the first five months of operation. The police helicopter is docu- mented to have prevented at least six po- lice pursuits.

Air1 is also known as a force multiplier as it allows a smaller force to complete as- signed tasks.

The Air Support Unit is staffed by two tac- tical flight officers, constables Jon Hood and Patrick Burke as well as two pilots, Bruce Buck and James Roach.
