Contrary to this prediction, we show delay of gratification times are increasing over the past 50 years, corresponding to a fifth of a standard deviation increase in ability per decade. Such perspectives, however, neglect individual experiences of technologies. Filling that lacuna, contemporary philosophers of technology challenge the sweeping determinism of their intellectual forerunners and investigate how specific technologies mediate particular human experiences. Their descriptive prowess, however, lacks the normative engagement of classical PoT, and they emphasize micro effects of technologies to the detriment of macro implications. This dissertation describes an “un-disciplined” philosophy of technology (UPoT) that unites the macro and micro perspectives by providing narratives of human-technology symbiosis and co-development. Un-disciplined philosophers of technology present posthuman and transhuman perspectives that emphasize the symbiotic relationships between humans and technology. Past research has shown that using behavioral strategies may help children to delay gratification longer. The current project tests whether children can learn one such strategy, covering the eyes, through imitation. Four-year-olds saw a model delay gratification using a strategy, using no strategy, or saw no model. They then participated in an accumulation task, where they could earn an incremental sticker reward. Children who saw a strategy showed evidence of imitation by covering their eyes. Unexpectedly, however, this had an adverse influence on their ability to delay gratification. Thus, although children can apply a strategy, its effectiveness may be limited by the type of task used (accumulation) or from an incomplete understanding of the strategy’s function.

I begin by highlighting the continuities as well as the differences between contemporary and earlier feminist debates on technology. Current approaches focus on the mutual shaping of gender and technology, in which technology is conceptualised as both a source and consequence of gender relations.     The fruitful cycle of delayed gratification Amara Shafi Medgar Evers College October 10, 2013 Often times when I am traveling throughout the city, it feels as though I have stepped into a failed food commercial, where mother and daughter are having a large McDonald’s breakfast that is over the calorie amount their body needs. Their mouths filled with food to the point where they do not even take a break to breathe and realize exactly with what they are filling their bodies. I get to the back of the bus to see a family that is overwhelmed with bags filled with clothes that tell of a big a shopping spree. There they sit using up two chairs for their many clothes that were likely bought out of vanity. Whilst watching news on the television I am informed of a world where families take up mortgages that are far too costly for their undersized salary. I sit thinking that if these families had any sort of self-control they would lead lives that would allow them to clear their minds of the delusions of the world. They would see the real important issues in their lives rather than these egotistical actions, many in our modern-day society promote as standard. There is an excess of food in our homes yet our neighbors are grappling with where their next meal will come from. We live in a world where a shopping spree helps promote high esteem rather than spending quality time with family, as if holding on to materialistic possessions will somehow make us acknowledge our self worth.
