Nonostante la vasta partecipazione di giocatrici provenienti da tutto il mondo, saranno proprio le prime quattro atlete del ranking mondiale a giocarsi il titolo iridato, essendosi qualificate per le semifinali in programma questa sera. Nella parte alta del tabellone, la padrona di casa Nour El Sherbini sta facendo valere il suo ruolo di favorita: testa di serie numero uno e campionessa in carica, l’egiziana ha sconfitto per 30 (116, 113, 12 10) l’inglese SarahJane Perry, ed affronterà in semifinale la connazionale Nouran Gohar, che invece ha eliminato la malese Nicol David, otto volte campionessa mondiale, sempre con il punteggio di 30 (116, 115, 119). L’Egitto potrà contare su ben tre semifinaliste, visto che nella parte bassa del tabellone si è qualificata anche Raneem El Weleily, già finalista nel 2014, che ha sconfitto la forte inglese Laura Massaro, argento nel 2015 e vincitrice nel 2013, per 31 (811, 118, 1210, 116). Serme punta a diventare la prima francese campionessa mondiale al femminile, ma dovrà sconfiggere l’armata egiziana per raggiungere l’obiettivo. In contemporanea con il torneo iridato femminile, si sta svolgendo anche l’El Gouna International Open, uno dei tornei più importanti delle World Series maschili. Anche in questo caso abbiamo ben tre egiziani in semifinale: Fares Dessouky giocherà infatti contro il connazionale Karim Abdel Gawad, mentre Marwan El Shorbagy, vincitore ai quarti sul fratello maggiore Mohamed, se la vedrà con il francese Grégory Gaultier, accreditato della terza testa di serie ma in realtà nuovo numero uno del ranking mondiale nel mese di aprile. The WSF Conference, which preceded the AGM, facilitated informal discussions and featured presentations to update the delegates on key initiatives - including the World Squash Officiating, a joint enterprise between the WSF and Professional Squash Association (PSA) to develop an online platform that will provide National Federations with the tools to develop refereeing in their country. The new initiative is scheduled to go live before the end of the year. Additionally James Sandwith, from BEBRAND, presented the findings of a strategic review commissioned by WSF, with the report now available for all member nations to appraise. The 49th Annual General Meeting, attended by representatives of 24 National Federations, saw delegates agree an amendment to the Articles of Association to reduce the risk of inappropriate leadership behavior and to ensure that delegates in attendance at an AGM have a formal connection with their National Federations. There were no changes to the standard Rules of Squash. However, the Rules of Squash 57 were updated, adding an extra ball rebound resilience at 33 degrees C that will help to ensure that the differential between blue and black balls - and their range of bounce - will be more uniform across the brands that are WSF-approved. The WSF Championship Regulations were updated with respect to player eligibility, the use of random draws and a new timeline and procedure for seeding juniors.

La sfida più attesa in campo femminile era lo scontro tra le statunitensi Amanda Sobhy (testa di serie n.11) e Olivia Blatchford Clyne, con la prima che ha avuto la meglio in rimonta con il punteggio di 3-1. Auch der Sport in Salzburg ist stark von den Auswirkungen der Corona-Pandemie betroffen. Es war mir daher ein großes Anliegen, dass wir rasch unseren Vereinen helfen. Mit über einer Million Euro an Sofort- hilfe, die an unsere Sportvereine gegangen sind, ist der Salzbur- ger Sport bis dato gut durch die Krise gekommen. Vor allem für unseren Nachwuchs ist es wichtig, dass solche Veranstaltungen wie die Austrian Squash Challenge stattfinden, um mehr Kinder und Jugendliche für den Sport zu begeistern. Ich hoffe, dass viele das Angebot nutzen und die Kids & School Days besuchen.

Held at the New Marina against the backdrop of Egypt’s Red Sea, El Sherbini - who defeated Laura Massaro 12 months ago to become the youngest Women’s World Champion of all time - was in spell-binding form to dispatch a slightly nervy El Welily, who was appearing in her second World Championship final. The 21-year-old never allowed fellow Alexandrian El Welily to get into her game, with El Sherbini closing the win out 3/0 to etch her name into the history books once more. El Sherbini’s victory brought a six-month title drought to an end with her first major title since she lifted her first World Championship title in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia a year ago. "I'm over the moon, two or three months ago I wouldn't have imagined that I would have won because I haven't won a [major] title this season," said El Sherbini. "It felt like I wasn't going to win this season anymore, but once I knew that it was going to be in Egypt, I was so excited and wanted to come to play in El Gouna.
