Introduction First of all, we are pleased to present the 2020 Wine Collection, especially designed and created with the help of our professional bookbinder Glenn Malkin, who has crafted our beautiful bespoke cover. At Askham Hall we aim to provide quality wines expressive of each region they represent. This is all made possible by Charles Lowther, whose unbridled passion for wine allows us to track down wines of distinct character and bring to you a list that represents the ever expanding and amazing World of Wine. Although we cover the majority of the World’s wine growing countries, we are especially proud of our selection of old world classic wines, notably Bordeaux and Burgundy, and hope to enthral with our vintages dating back to 1893. To help with this collection we are lucky enough to have access to some of the treasures of the Lowther family’s private cellar. Nothing excites us more than sharing our passion for wine so please don’t have any hesitation in asking advice or questions regarding your selection and we will happily recommend something to suit your taste, budget and, most importantly, Chef Richard’s menu. To help with your selection, we have arranged all our sub-sections in ascending price order apart from the Bordeaux Reds, where we take you from 1893 to 2016. If perhaps there’s a wine you have been fond of in the past and haven’t been able to find on our list we would love to hear about it and could always try to source it for your return visit. We are very proud to announce our Wine Collection has been awarded “Best of Award of Excellence 2019” …”for having one of the finest Restaurant Wine List in the World” judged by the prestigious The Wine Spectator (Restaurant Awards) based in America. Also awarded Two-Stars out of Three by The World of Fine Wine World’s Best Wine Lists. AA Notable Wine List 2020, Judges evaluated and awarded over 1,000 wine lists.

Charles Lowther - Proprietor Nico Chièze Joshua Mullock – Assistant Maître de Maison/House Manager Maître de Maison/House Manager WSET Diploma Scholar 2004/06 Winner: Scotland and Northern England Regional Final, Sommelier of the Year Charles Lowther: “I was brought up on a diet of mature Margaux and Saint Estèphe, two of my Father’s favourites. My palate, therefore, grew to enjoy softer structured wines and I came to absolutely adore burgundy as well as these famous clarets.” Nico Chièze: “I have a personal interest in the wine of the Loire Valley as it is where I was born and brought up. In my young sommelier career however, I had the privilege to work for 3 years in Bordeaux in the famous Pauillac appellation. I therefore have an in depth passion and knowledge for Bordeaux wines and love the magic of opening an old and historic wine for a ‘bonne dégustation’!” Joshua Mullock: “My passion for wine really started over the dinner table with my family, however being of a slightly younger generation I have a real admiration for new world producers and wines – notably South Africa. Aside from that, with something delicious from Spain or a glass of Champagne in front of me, a happier Sommelier you will not find!”

We are very proud to use the Coravin wine system here at Askham Hall for most things we pour by the glass. This is a device which allows us to pour wine without removing the cork, that uses Argon gas to keep bottles fresh. As a result, we are fortunate to be able to pour glasses of wine from the same bottle, over a long period of time, while remaining in good condition. We can therefore open more bottles from the cellar than just the selection below. We offer a diverse selection by the glass to accompany the changing menu of Chef Richard, we also regularly change the wines to keep our offering dynamic. We would be very happy to assist you and find a wine to accompany your menu choices and to suit your preferred style. We also offer a tasting wine flight to accompany the tasting menu.

Château Musar was founded in the 1930s, after members of the Hochar family had spent time in Bordeaux to study oenology. They took inspiration from the grapes and style produced there and have gained a huge following worldwide for their special wines. The family has produced through Civil War and Conflict, even when the winery itself has been under attack, and have, remarkably, made consistently excellent wines that we are proud to showcase some older vintages of. Opening old Musar is always a treat and the wines themselves an incredibly pleasurable drinking experience.

Cigar Selection

There is no place finer to enjoy a cigar than here at Askham Hall considering the history made by the 5th Earl of Lonsdale (The Yellow Earl). He would spend £500 a week on cigars and lent his name to a completely new international size of cigar, aptly named the Lonsdale. May we gently remind you that all cigars must be smoked outside.

While a connoisseur of wine might agree the superiority of one vintage year over another and one vineyard over another, it would be an extreme act of prejudice to award the crown of supremacy to any one wine. With cigars, however, there is no second opinion. Indisputably the best cigars come from Cuba and are named after its capital city, Havana. A Havana cigar eclipses an ordinary one as a bottle of first growth Claret eclipses a common, everyday wine.

Montecristo Joyita 10.00 Havana, delicate aromas give a mild to full flavour.

Cohiba Panatela 12.00 Havana, Fidel Castro’s original brand favourite, medium to full bodied.

Trinidad Reyes 14.00 A rare cigar which offers an approachable and well-rounded style with a distinct hint of richness.

H. Upmann Gran Coronas 18.00 Havana, mild to medium smoke, very smooth and subtle.

Cohiba Siglo II 25.00 Havana, Fidel Castro’s original brand favourite, medium to full bodied.

Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 2 28.00 Havana, mellow complexity and richness is the hallmark here, medium to full.

Partagas Serie D No 4 30.00 Havana, rich, earthy and full flavoured.

Bolivar Lonsdale 35.00 No need really to introduce the Yellow Earl Lord Lonsdale’s favourite who gave his name to this very particular size. Full bodied, gives the ultimate smoke.
