Position Title: Manager - Vic AAMRI

Report to: Peter Thomas, Director, Policy & Operations Sam Ludolf, Deputy Director – Strategy and Operations

Location: The Walter & Institute, 1G Royal Parade, Parkville

Hours: Full Time, 1 FTE

Contract: 18 month contract

Remuneration: $115,000 pro-rata, plus superannuation and salary packaging options

Area of Responsibilities: Government and stakeholder relations Medical research policy and strategy Project management and delivery

Qualifications and Tertiary qualification, with experience in government policy/relations experience

ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIAN MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES

Founded in 1993, the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) is the peak body representing medical research institutes across . Our mission is to achieve positive policy outcomes for our member institutes—and Australian health and medical research more broadly—by undertaking advocacy activities, informing and influencing government policy, building networks, and representing member institutes in areas of shared concern. AAMRI plays a pivotal role in representing the interests of medical research organisations to Federal Parliamentarians and government agencies, and is seeking to expand its engagement with state governments. AAMRI has 47 member institutes, ranging in size from 20 to 1,000 staff and students, and collectively representing over 15,000 staff and students and an annual research budget of $1 billion. Our members are internationally recognised leaders in health and medical research, undertaking a broad spectrum of research, from fundamental biomedical discovery through to translational and clinical research. Together, our members address practically every aspect of human health and disease. Our members are predominantly independent charities, but they also include university-based medical research institutes and hospital-based medical research institutes.

AAMRI is overseen by a President and Board, all engaged on a voluntary basis and drawn from our member organisations. Our office is based at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and includes three full-time staff, a Director of Policy & Operations, a Project Officer and a

Communications Manager, and a part-time Administration Officer. AAMRI is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity.

THE POSITION

The Manager – VicAAMRI will report to the Deputy Director – Strategy and Operations at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research where, as part of a small team, they will contribute to government and stakeholder relations, medical research policy and strategy, and the design and management of strategic projects, with a specific focus on initiatives benefitting Victorian institutes.

Working closely with the independent medical research institutes and the Director of Strategy and Operations of AAMRI, the Manager – Vic AAMRI will apply focused effort to the development of time sensitive critical government submissions on behalf of the medical research sector.

Position responsibilities:

Government and stakeholder relations

• Prepare policy and budget submissions to Victorian government • Develop and implement strategic plans to influence Victorian parliamentarians, government agencies and other stakeholders about the value of Victorian MRIs • Represent AAMRI at government and sector meetings • Build strong relationships with Victorian parliamentarians, government agencies, medical research institutes and other stakeholders Medical research policy and strategy

• Identify and develop opportunities for funding medical research institutes • Scope and develop compelling reports to position medical research institutes to win funding • Identify issues affecting the sector, undertake analysis to understand their impact, and develop potential responses • Collect and analyse information on the medical research sector, and prepare reports, policy documents and fact sheets • Provide policy and advocacy advice to the Deputy Director – Strategy and Operations at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and/or the Director of Policy and Operations at AAMRI Project management and delivery

• Provide policy and advocacy advice to Victorian AAMRI members • Devise and undertake projects of strategic interest to Victorian AAMRI members • Work with other team members in the Deputy Director – Strategy and Operations at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research office and/or in the Director of Policy and Operations at AAMRI office to drive effective outcomes

• Provide support for other activities required to deliver a Victorian Government budget bid in 2018 (i.e. work closely with communications managers, consultants and other stakeholders as required) Other duties

• Undertake other duties from time to time as directed by the Deputy Director – Strategy and Operations at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and/or the Director of Policy and Operations at AAMRI

REPORTING AND LIAISON

The Manager - Vic AAMRI, reports to the Deputy Director – Strategy and Operations at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and works closely with the Director of Policy and Operations at AAMRI. The Manager – Vic AAMRI will also liaise with other lead Victorian AAMRI members including the Deputy Director of Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, and the Director of the .

SELECTION CRITERIA

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

Essential • A tertiary qualification is essential, with experience in the medical research sector preferred

• Experience with policy analysis

• Extensive experience with project management • Experience in government policy or government relations

• Exceptional organisational skills, including prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines • Excellent written communication skills, including writing for difference audiences • Strong analytical skills • Demonstrated diplomacy and an ability to build enduring relationships • An ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and with a high level of accountability

Desirable • Experience in advocacy and communications • Proficiency with IT • Attention to detail and intuition

• Experience working in a small team with limited supervision
