COMPETITION GOALS

1. Create a “One City” icon, connecting the city over the Anacostia River

2. Envision a recreation hub that links the destinations along both sides of the river

3. Produce a design that is exceptional; that meets community aspirations, focuses on the environment , and is self-sustaining in terms of operations and maintenance

4. Ignite interest on a national scale to galvanize fundraising efforts

5. Generate community involvement in shaping the Recreation Bridge Project and seeing it realized

• Five of the top ten causes of death in the District—heart disease, cancer, hypertension, diabetes and stroke— directly related to the influence of poor diet, excess weight and low levels of physical activity

• Ward 3 residents have lowest overweight & obesity rate: (43%); Ward 7 the highest (73%); Ward 8: 72%

• Approximately 20% of all D.C. children are obese
