APPROVED NTS Map Sheet 83 A/11 – “Chain Lakes” Berdine Lake (lake) Located at: Sec. 7, Twp. 42, Rge. 24, W4 and Sec.12, 13, 24, Twp. 42, Rge. 25-W4 (52° 36′ 43″ N & 113° 27′ 54″ W) Approximately 9 km south-east of Ponoka, the northern-most of the Chain Lakes. This name commemorates the Berdine family, long-time residents of this region. In 1913, J. M. "Mack" Berdine arrived in Alberta from Oregon. After looking at a number of locations he purchased land south-east of Ponoka at NE12-42-25-W4; the presence of the Chain Lakes being a deciding factor in his selection. Mack Berdine returned to Oregon to settle his affairs. He returned in July 1914, bringing with him a boxcar of livestock, wagons and household goods. His family arrived shortly after. The Berdines farmed and raised sheep, being one of the first in the region to specialize in sheep. Mack Berdine was also known as an avid hunter, using his hounds to track coyotes. The family was very active socially and one of Mack Berdine’s sons being in demand as a square dance caller. Descendants of Berdine family continued to reside on the family land as of 2003. The name Berdine Lake has been in use locally since at least the 1950s and possibly since the 1910s. The lake is also known locally as "Earl's Lake" in reference to Earl Berdine, a son of the original settler.
