'Where do we want Africa to be live and ten years from now? What changes would have to be made? How can me do them together so that every boy and girl now living in every country on this continent has a chance to live his or her dreams?"

Leon H. Sullivan Summit July 17, 2006. Abuja, Nigeria

Ifricare salutes the Honorable William J. Clinton for his outstanding contributions to peace, justice, and economic opportunity worldwide. Serving two terms as President of the United States from 1993-2001, President Clinton's core values of building community, creating opportunity, and demanding responsibility resulted in unprecedented progress for America.

After leaving the White House. President Clinton established the William J. Clinton Foundation with the mission to strengthen the capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence. To achieve this, the Clinton Foundation is focused on four critical areas: health security, with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS; economic empowerment; leadership development and citizen service; and racial, ethnic and religious reconciliation. In September 2005, President Clinton hosted the inaugural meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). CGI is a non-partisan catalyst for action, bringing together a community of global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges. Data collector Tatu Bendera interviews a caregiver lo collect baseline indicators for the Atricare COPE [Community-based Orphan Care, Protection and Empowerment] Project in Dodoma, Tanzania. Access to clean water helps reduce the risk of children becoming ill or dying from water-bourne diseases.

_ \ frica is home to 64% of the people living with AIDS. With prevalence rates Aranging from 2% in countries like Senegal to as high as 3S°fo in countries like Botswana, the pandemic is devastating African communities, destroying local economies, and depleting the work force. Nearly 12.5 million African children have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS, which represents about 90% of children orphaned by AIDS globally.

Ensuring children have access to the best care and support services has long been a focus for Africare. Through its work in 25 countries, Africare seeks to create a future of hope for African children and their families by addressing major childhood illnesses including malaria, diarrhea, malnutrition, and acute respiratory infection to name a few. Africare has also devised innovative and timely strategies to equip communities with the tools needed to effectively respond to the HIV/AIDS crisis. This has included a special focus on the needs of orphans and vulnerable children.

In response to Africa's orphan crisis, Africare provides comprehensive treatment, care and support services linking thousands of African children and their caregivers to health facilities and community based services. This model helps decrease stigma and discrimination by increasing opportunities for Africa's children to thrive and become healthy, contributing members of their communities. Africare is proud to lead the way in the implementation of programs that address the psychological, economic and social needs of Africa's children.

•AI .s the first African American to head the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, Bishop John T. Walker sewed his church, his country and his world as an exemplar of interracial reconciliation, peace and justice.
