BIG CANOE APPROVED LIST: MAY 2019

According to the Covenants, Big Canoe is “an architecturally and environmentally controlled community.” The Big Canoe Approved Plant List is designed to protect the mountain setting with a botanical nod to healthful diversity. To this end, the focus of this revision is (1) eliminating invasives and (2) emphasizing that are native and natural to the Piedmont region of in which we reside. The non-native plants remaining on the list reflects the additional desire to maintain diversity in our landscapes and provide deer and drought resistance. The following list of evergreen and and is approved for landscape planting in Big Canoe. Recognizing that native plants may not be readily available, Property Owners may purchase a as long as it is aesthetically natural to the Piedmont region.

All non-native invasive and native invasive plants are prohibited (see www.gaeppc.org/list/ for Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council List of Non- native Invasive Plants in Georgia). Adjacent states’ invasive lists are also important to note.

Growing conditions vary even within the boundaries of Big Canoe. Elevation, sunlight, soil nutrients, wind, and rainfall are among the factors that affect plant survival and growth. These variables account for the fact that a plant may be a large in one locale yet a small in another; thus, while a plant is listed in only one category, it may grow larger or smaller.

Furthermore, there are zoological considerations. Wildlife in a mountain community regard all property as their common eating ground. Plants that emit strong odors (such as anise) and plants that have jagged edges (such as ) appear to be last on the favorite menu for wildlife. Repellants for deer, moles, and the like are available, though they are most effective only when applied on a regular basis.

Landscape plans that are approved after May 1, 2019 must adhere to this list. Landscape plans that were approved/installed prior to May 1, 2019 are not subject to this list and are grandfathered in. Henceforth, the goal for common properties and undeveloped residential lots is that landscapes adhere to the May 2019 Big Canoe POA approved plant list.

Property Owners are encouraged to remove previously approved plants that are now considered invasive, particularly nandina, elaeagnus, and leatherleaf mahonia. Kudzu should be reported to the POA: fixit@ bigcanoepoa.org. Big Canoe POA has begun a program to eradicate these from common grounds. In summary, the focus of plant selection in Big Canoe should be twofold: non-invasive and natural to the Piedmont region of Georgia.

With regard to Supporting Plants (vines, , herbs, grasses, and groundcovers), Georgia Piedmont native plants are appropriate [see www.extension.uga.edu/publications/ for University of Georgia Extension List of native Plants of North Georgia, Bulletins 987(Trees, Shrubs, Woody Vines), 987-2 (Ferns), 987-3 (Wildflowers), 987-4 (Grasses)]. All invasive plants, native and non-native, are prohibited (see www.gaeppc.org/list/ for Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council List of Non-native Invasive Plants in Georgia). Any Supporting Plant that is not invasive is approved.
