Annual Report 2011 2011 Academy of the Social Sciences The Academy THE ACADEMY The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia was established in 1971. Before this date, Academy functions were fulfilled through the Social Science Research Council of Australia, founded in 1942. The membership of the Academy comprises those who have achieved a very high level of scholarly distinction, recognised internationally. The Academy is an autonomous, non-governmental organisation, devoted to the advancement of knowledge and research in the various social sciences. The Academy is a corporate body of social scientists. Its objects are: • to promote excellence in and encourage the advancement of the social sciences in Australia; • to act as a co-ordinating group for the promotion of research and teaching in the social sciences; • to foster excellence in research and to subsidise the publication of studies in the social sciences; • to encourage and assist in the formation of other national associations or institutions for the promotion of the social sciences or any branch of them; • to promote international scholarly cooperation and to act as an Australian national member of international organisations concerned with the social sciences; • to act as consultant and adviser in regard to the social sciences; and • to comment where appropriate on national needs and priorities in the area of the social sciences.
