Missouri University of Science and Technology is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, joining the league in the 2005-06 academic year as part of a league expansion that brought three institutions into the league. The GLVC, which is constituted of 13 institutions for the 2008-09 season, made its name as a power in NCAA Division II but has enjoyed success in many sports and now the league can claim itself as one of the nation’s top Division II leagues.

The addition of Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Quincy, Wisconsin-Parkside and Missouri-St. Louis in the mid-1990s allowed the GLVC to become an immediate na- tional power in several sports such as men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball and tennis.

At the start of the 2005-06 season, Missouri S&T, Drury University and Rockhurst University – all of whom have had a good deal of success at the regional and national levels in various sports – have enhanced the league’s reputation at the NCAA Divi- sion II level. The conference will undergo another expansion in the 2009-10 season when the University of Illinois-Springfield and Maryville University become members of the GLVC.

The league’s staff has also increased along the way, with the GLVC hiring its first full-time commissioner in 1996. In 2001, an associate commissioner was also added to the full-time conference staff and the GLVC’s first full-time sports information director was added in the summer of 2006.

The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC.

Since formulation of the conference, seven schools have joined the league: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994) and UM-St. Louis (1995). Ashland and

Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season. IPFW left the GLVC following the 2000-01 academic year and SIU LADY MINER SOFTBALL Edwardsville left the conference after the 2007-08 season.

The conference expanded to include women’s basketball in 1983-84 and immediately established a women’s-men’s doubleheader format in league play to ensure maximum exposure for both squads. The GLVC plays its games primarily on Thursday and Saturday nights in November, December, January and February.

The GLVC can claim schools in all of the Midwest major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (Wisconsin-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst), Springfield, Mo. (Drury) and St. Louis (Missouri-St. Louis/Maryville).

Campus overview

Missouri S&T is one of the top technological research universities in the nation. Surrounded by Ozarks scenery (Rolla is about 100 miles west of St. Louis), the campus is accessible, safe and friendly. Known for its engineering programs, S&T also offers degrees in the sciences, liberal arts, humanities and business. About 6,000 students are currently enrolled in classes, making S&T big enough to accommodate a diverse population but small enough for individuals to stand out. S&T students are expected to actively participate in the processes of getting an education, whether that means joining a student design team, participating in intercollegiate athletics, conducting research with faculty members, helping to assure safe drinking water in a Central American community, or planning ac- tivities for the campus’s next St. Pat’s celebration. Dr. John F. Carney III, Missouri S&T Chancellor

Dr. John F. Carney III, former provost and vice president for academic affairs at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass., began his tenure as chancellor at Missouri S&T on Sept. 1, 2005. A 40-year veteran of higher education, Carney served as WPI’s provost and vice president for academic affairs from 1996 through 2004. In that capacity, he hired more than half of the current tenured and tenure-track faculty. He was involved with the creation of the Center for Educational Development, Technology and Assessment, led the renovation of several WPI laboratories, bolstered the campus’s Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division, and made WPI, one of the nation’s oldest technological universities, a more welcoming place for female faculty members. A civil engineer by training, Carney earned a bachelor’s degree from Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass., in 1963. He also earned master’s and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in 1964 and 1966, respectively. Carney began his academic career at the University of Connecticut, where he served on the civil engineering faculty from 1966-1981. He then joined Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., as professor and head of the civil engineering department, a position he held until 1983, when he joined Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., as a professor of civil engineering. At Vanderbilt, he served as associate dean for graduate affairs (1989) and then associate dean for research and graduate affairs (1993). He joined the faculty and administration at WPI in 1996. The field of impact mechanics has been Carney’s major research interest for more than 30 years. During this period, he was awarded a series of grants and contracts with the National Science Foundation, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Federal Highway Administration, British Rail, the Advanced Railway Research Centre, and the Departments of Transportation in the states of Connecticut, Washington, Alabama, Georgia, Colorado, and Tennessee. This research activity resulted in the development and implementation of a whole series of impact attenuation devices employed in motorway safety applications in the and overseas. Carney holds nine patents in this area. In addition, his work with the railroad research community in Great Britain has led to new concepts for improving the crashworthiness of trains. Carney is the author of more than 140 technical publications in the area of structural mechanics and has been active on numerous National Research Council committees. He is also a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Chad Schatz begins his second season as an assistant coach at Missouri S&T. He primarily works with the teams pitchers and catchers as well as coaching first base. Under his guidance the Lady Miners pitching staff lowered their ERA from 3.25 in 2007 to 3.03 in 2008. Prior to coming to Missouri S&T, he served as an assistant coach for five years at Columbia College and ten years at the University of Missouri. Coach Schatz has coached numerous All-Americans. He still plays men’s fastpitch softball and baseball. LADY MINER SOFTBALL

Kandi Wieberg, Graduate Assistant Coach Kandi Wieberg is in her first season as a graduate assistant coach after a stellar four year playing career with the Lady Miners. She finished her career as the career leader at S&T in home runs (34), RBIs (105), doubles (49) and runs scored (169). Wieberg also ended up in the top in five other categories. She was second in hits with 223, third in games played (195), batting average (.347) and stolen bases with 73 swipes and was fourth in triples with 12. Wieberg, who was named as the “Player of the Year” by the GLVC, batted .402 with a team-high 12 home runs and 39 runs batted in during the 2007 season in which the Lady Miners made their first-ever appearance at the NCAA regional tournament. As the team’s leadoff hitter, she also led the GLVC in doubles (21), total bases (127) and slugging percentage (.751), while ranking second in runs scored (46), hits (68) and home runs. She ranked among the top five in the GLVC in nine categories and is sixth nationally in doubles per game. During the 2007 season, Wieberg broke the S&T career records for doubles (42) and home runs (24) and tied the record for the longest hitting streak of 18 games. She had a .494 average in conference play with five homers and 16 RBI for the Lady Miners. She was a first-team All-America selection by Daktronics and a second-team pick to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America squad.

9 2009 SEASON PREVIEW

Lady Miners look to continue run of recent success and get back to NCAA Tournament

The Missouri S&T Lady Miners softball squad looks to continue its run of recent success and continue to be one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as well as the Midwest Region for the 2009 campaign. That task won’t be easy though as it has to replace the back-to-back GLVC Players of the Year in Kandi Wieberg and Kelsey Musselman.

Third year head coach Don Kennedy believes that the Lady Miners have those pieces in place to make a run at the conference title and make it back to the NCAA Tournament after missing out last season. They return 11 letterwin- ners and five starters off last year’s squad including two time first team All-GLVC and all-region selection Emily Tucker that went 26-21, 17-9 in league play.

“We’ve added some new people to go along with our returnees and we will have a different look on the infield with a new second baseman, shortstop and third baseman,” he said. “The fall went well and the kids seemed to mesh well together hopefully that carries over into the spring and puts us in position to make a run at the conference champion- ship and get back to the regional tournament. “

Kennedy brought in five freshmen and a junior college transfer to try and offset the loss of the four players from last year. Rachelle Rhodes transferred in from Crowder Community College in Neosho, Mo., where she hit .398 with three home runs, 18 doubles and 57 runs batted in last season while the five freshmen brought in have helped improve the team speed.

“Rachelle is a true power hitter that hits a lot of doubles and drives in a lot of runs and will probably hit in the four spot for us this season,” he said. “With our freshmen we’ve increased our speed quite a bit. Lindsey DeForest is a slap hitter that we’ve been working on hitting away so we can utilize her speed, and Lauren Briggs has got some good speed and those two have challenged our juniors who are actually really fast on the team. Some of those fresh- men are going to have jump right in and start right away Maggie Schroeder will be our starting shortstop and did a really nice job for us their this fall she played mostly shortstop at the high school level and primarily at third during summer ball so she’s made a nice transition back to short.”

Offense

Offensively the Lady Miners will be a different team than fans have been used to seeing over the last four seasons. After breaking the team record for home runs each of the last two seasons the 2009 version of the Lady Miners will be built on speed more so than power. S&T will have to replace its top two power hitters from last season in Wieberg and Musselman, but Tucker returns to help anchor the lineup. After hitting in the cleanup spot last season Tucker will move up to third spot in the order with Rhodes taking her spot in the cleanup position. Becky Davis will move up in the order from sixth or seventh to the leadoff spot.

“Becky has got a good amount of speed and is probably the fastest one on the team. We need her to step up and be a leader batting in the one spot and getting on base so we can get her some stolen bases too,” Kennedy said. “Tucker has hit for a good average her first two years has done a good job of driving in runs. She can hit the double and the home runs and with having Rachelle (Rhodes) behind her being a good hitter we hope that opposing teams won’t pitch around Tucker giving her a chance to hit.” Emily Tucker First Team All-GLVC LADY MINER SOFTBALL LADY Pitching

The Lady Miners return their top two pitchers from last season in senior Jen O’Hara and junior Ashley Wallingford. O’Hara, a two-time all-conference selection, went 11-8 last year with a 2.27 earned run average and had one shutout 10 and 15 complete games last year while Wallingford led the staff with 13 wins and 97 strikeouts in 145 innings of 2009 SEASON PREVIEW work. She had three shutouts and tossed a five inning no-hitter against Bellarmine facing just one over the minimum. Also expected to see some time in the circle this season is Briggs, a freshman from LaMonte, Mo., who pitched at Knob Noster in high school and will probably be the number three pitcher. Sophomore Kristen Drage could also see time in the circle as well but was limited in the fall due to some injuries.

Catcher

Coley Naughton returns for her third year behind the plate for the Lady Miners and has caught all but one game in her first two seasons.

“Coley is a Cal Ripken type die-hard that is going to play all the time even if she’s banged up,” he said. “She does a nice job behind the plate and we are look- ing for some good things out of her again. We are hoping to see her improve on her hitting which she’s been working hard on in the off-season.” Jen O’Hara Honorable Mention All-GLVC Infield

There is a lot of competition for playing time at first base with two or three different players battling for time there. Kristen Drage and Kassi Deibert are probably the two front runners for the position right now according to Ken- nedy.

“First base is not dead set yet,” he said. “It depends on who steps up in the batter’s box for us. Kristen and Kassi are probably the two I’m looking at the most for that position.”

Davis will get the starting nod at second base with DeForest backing her up. At shortstop Schroeder will see the bulk of the time there as well as Krista Porterfield. Rhodes will be the starting third baseman with Porterfield pos- LADY MINER SOFTBALL sibly seeing some time there as well.

“It’s something a little different for us this year to have backups on the infield,” he said.

Outfield

The outfield returns two starters from last year in left fielder Katie Smith andTucker in center field. Right field is kind of up in the air right now with Drage, Porterfield and Allison Plummer all competing for time out there.

“We’ve got Katie back in left field who worked her way into a starting role last season to go along with Tucker in center,” he said. “Kristen, Krista and Allison are battling for time out there. Krista played there some last season and Allison was a player we brought off the bench last year as a defensive replacement in the late innings and she made some great catches for us.”

Schedule

The Lady Miners have another tough schedule to contend with this year. In addition to their tough conference schedule they will play a very challenging non-conference schedule which includes a trip to Decatur, Ala., for the second year in row to take part in the Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout Tournament which starts next weekend. S&T will also renew some old MIAA rivalries going up against nine MIAA schools including a home and home with NFCA pre-season ranked #19 Central Missouri and three games each against Missouri Southern and Truman State.

Lady Miner All-American Players

Kandi Wieberg Second Base, 2007 Wieberg, who was named as the “Player of the Year” by the GLVC, batted .402 with a team-high 12 home runs and 39 runs batted in during the 2007 season in which the Lady Miners made their first-ever appearance at the NCAA regional tourna- ment. As the team’s leadoff hitter, she also led the GLVC in doubles (21), total bases (127) and slugging percentage (.751), while ranking second in runs scored (46), hits (68) and home runs. She ranked among the top five in the GLVC in nine cat- egories and is sixth nationally in doubles per game.

Ashley Winter

Outfield, 2007 LADY MINER SOFTBALL Winter, a freshman, led the Great Lakes Valley Conference in hitting with a .469 average and a team-high 16 stolen bases. She also led the GLVC in on-base per- centage at .490 and ranked third in the league in hits (67) and runs scored (41). Her 15-game hitting streak during the season was the longest in school history by a freshman. She was selected to the All-GLVC first team and all-region first team by the NFCA and Daktronics preceding her third team selection to the Lou- isville Slugger/NFCA All-America squad.

Kelsey Musselman Third Base, 2008 Musselman, who was named as the “Player of the Year” by the GLVC, led the Lady Miners with a .422 batting average -- which was good for second in the GLVC behind the .430 mark posted by Wisconsin-Parkside’s Amanda Miller -- while leading the league in slugging percentage, on-base percentage and home runs.

Musselman had a school record 14 home runs on the year and drove in 47 runs, while posting a .755 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage. Her per- formance netted her two GLVC “Player of the Week” awards during the year and eventually first-team All-GLVC honors.
