Our Student Services team also hosts the Students’ Union and work closely with the The Student Voice Student Academic Representatives (StARs).

Student Union Havering College has always championed its Students’ Union as it is at the heart of student life. The Union is run by students and they want you to get involved and have your say. The Student Union gives support to students, plans events and activities and represents student views to College management. Elected Higher Education Officers ensure that the views of Higher Education students studying at the College are well represented. Being part of the Students’ Union is a great way to learn valuable new skills, work as part of a team, meet new people and get the most out of your student experience.

If you are interested in joining the Student Union, elections take place in March. If you miss out on the election you have another chance to join in October through the co-option process. If you are interested in joining and would like more information telephone 01708 455011 ext: 2285 or e-mail [email protected].

Student Academic Representatives StARs play a crucial role in the College by communicating the student ‘voice’ to others. StARs represent the needs and issues of students in their tutor/class group and pass these on to the Students’ Union and the College. By being a StAR you will learn more about the College, influence decision makers and instigate change. You will also enhance your CV and make some friends along the way!

Simon and fellow students on the second year of the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course were invited by London-based Arup to submit ideas for an e-card destined for their employees and contacts across 70 countries. The company has designed and worked on some of the world’s most iconic buildings including Sydney Opera House, Heathrow Terminal 5, The Gherkin and the Beijing Water Cube. Simon’s animated design featuring drawings of some of Arup’s landmark projects was selected as the winning pitch.

Simon said: “This is the first project I have worked on for an outside company. We all had a good few weeks to work on this and it took me ages to come up with an idea. I finally decided on a speeded up animation. It was one piece of film so I had to sit and draw the buildings simultaneously. I have been up to Arup’s London offices to produce it again as they wanted me to include drawings of buildings from each region of the world. It’s very exciting to think my work will be sent out and seen internationally.”

Havering College enjoys a strong link with the company, as Arup senior designer Terry Nicholls is an alumni from the Graphic Design degree course.
