Of course, they leave out the parts about the evil and wickedness that reside here. We're a literal paradise with pitfalls here. —Dameron Keel, Merchant of Hlondeth he Vilhon Reach is a large area just south of the Sea of Fallen Stars. While most citizens of Faerun know it as the home of mercenaries and massed armies, there is much more to this humid land. It is rich with varied customs and beliefs. The area gets its name from the sea that surrounds it, an immense body of water with cities nestled against its borders. These cities—and their warlike reputa- tions—are what most northerners know about the Reach. For some, it is no more than a storehouse for mercenaries; for others, it is a place to sell their wares and make their living. But the Reach is as rich and diverse as any area of Faerun. It has its petty politicians and powerful wizards, but the heart of the Reach is its people. Nature is a powerful force, much more powerful than that wielded by power-seeking wizards or the strength of arms of the most renowned adventuring company. Nature is more respected in the Reach than in other areas of Faerun. This respect probably stems from the suffering felt by its residents. During the growth of its commu- nities, the Reach felt the hand of the plague caress its lands on more than one occasion. The treachings learned were harsh but remembered. These lessons are reinforced from time to time by the Emerald Enclave, a powerful force of druids that maintain balance in the area. Sample file That is not to say that the well-known forces of evil from the north—the Zhentarim and Red Wizards, for example—are unheard of in the Vilhon, it is just that their ability to interfere is drastically reduced by the activity of Enclave. "How do your actions aid nature?" is a common question to newcomers with grand ideas of expansion. Those with personal agendas to make fast money at nature's expense are warned to look elsewhere. About This Book he Vilhon Reach is designed for the FORGOTTEN REALMS® Campaign Setting. The T product is divided into two parts. This booklet is intended for the eyes of the DM only. If you're a player, your information is found in the Player's Guide to the Vilhon Reach. Some of the information presented in the Player's Guide is not detailed in this sup- plement. This information details the some of the customs, festivals and rumors of the area, presented to the players by a knowledgeable scholar. The DM should read both the Player's Guide and this supplement to gain a thorough knowledge of the Vilhon Reach. Monster ENCyclopedia: Aarakocra This is a series of articles about specific monsters from D&D's history. Each entry takes a look at the origin of one D&D creature, and tracks its appearances and evolution across different editions. This entry covers the first creature to appear in any alphabetical listing of the denizens of the worlds of D&D: the aarakocra. Contents Origins Aarakocra and magic items Wildemount 1st Edition Al-Qadim Miniatures 2nd Edition Dark Sun Computer games 3rd Edition Dragonlance Aarakocra names 4th Edition Forgotten Realms Comparative statistics 5th Edition Greyhawk References Aarakocra gods Planescape Aarakocra and other monsters Spelljammer Origins Avian humanoids are a staple feature in the folklore of many human cultures, from the alkonost of Russian mythology to the peris of Persian legends. Some Egyptian gods were depicted with the heads of birds (Horus and Thoth) or with wings attached to their arms (Isis and Nephthys). Bird people have featured in fantasy fiction at least as far back as 1750. In The Life and Adventures of Peter Wilkins, a Cornish Man by Robert Paltock, the titular character travels to the island of Normnbdsgrsutt which is inhabited by people who can fly with the aid of a membrane. Fiend Folio (1981) It isn’t surprising then, that Dungeon & Dragons has its own race of humanoid avians. The aarakocra (or “bird-man” as the entry title suggests as an alternative) made its debut in the Fiend Folio, credited to Lawrence Schick. Compared to many of the other creatures in the book, the aarakocra gets a generous amount of space, with a full page dedicated to its appearance, combat tactics, reproductive cycle, and culture.

WESTGATE RUBY WINE: (Westgate, Vilhon Reach) This thick red wine is often served with a small ruby in it, (although only in the finest feast-halls of Westgate.) It is a stronger wine served throughout Cormyr, the Vilhon Reach and the Sword Coast. WINTER WINE: (Neverwinter, the Sword Coast) A common white wine made in the North and sold in other cold climates. This surprisingly strong tasting (although not quite effecting) wine is often drunk by nobility but can be found in smaller taverns in the North, Sword Coast and northern parts of Amn. ALES ANGEL'S LIGHT ALE: (Mount Celestia) The glowing white ale has an unbelievable sweet taste but is rather light, even for its name. It is brewed in the golden fields of Mount Celestia and but is only common in Sigil, although some barrels of the drink have appeared in various Realms. When drunk this ale gives the imbiber a glow equal to a light spell. ATHKATHLIC ALE: (Athkatla, Amn) Also know as Amnish Ale, this poor quality brown ale brewed in huge amounts and often put onto ships for Amnish sailors, thus it is often popular with sailing folk and sometimes referred to as “Ship's Ale”. It has a bitter and dull taste. It is found in Amn, Tethyr, the Sword Coast and the Amnian colonies of Maztica. BITTER BLACK ALE: (Iriaebor, the Sword Coast) A very popular drink known for it's bitter taste and black color. This drink is often the favorite of wandering adventurers and can be found in the Sword Coast, Amn, Tethyr, the North, the Vilhon Reach and even in Cormyr.

  • The High History of Impiltur
THE HIGH HISTORY OF IMPILTUR by George Krashos with Ed Greenwood, Eric Boyd & Steven Schend For the scribes of Candlekeep This work stands as testament to their interest, inspiration, encouragement and love of the Realms. The history of Impiltur and its four great dynasties spans more than an age. Born in the shadow of the demon-tainted realm of Narfell, the kingdom owes its roots to the continual human diaspora that was a feature of the Chondathan race. The melding of Chondathan and Nar cultures that followed secured the solid foundation that would see our kingdom dominate the Easting Reach and nurture the founding of such kingdoms as Milvarn, Velprin, Aglarond and Damara. Beset by a myriad of foes, most notably the dark legacy of fiends left behind after the fall of Narfell, the men and women of Impiltur have braved and tamed this land, and in so doing have endured Talona’s dire regard, the depredations of the orcs and the scourge of the hobgoblins. Now with the crowning of a new king, Impiltur must wake from its somnolence and prepare itself to once again seize the mantle of greatness that many had considered lost to it forever. A golden age looms on the horizon, for as surely as the sun rises of a morn, so too must Impiltur’s glorious history be made and remade anew as the seasons turn and heroes stand tall. Relamphras, Royal Sage of Impiltur The Regency Annals Year of the Lightning Storms (1374 DR) - The Foehammer has blessed us on this day of blades, and while we have bathed in scarlet, we now bask in glory.
