We're at the shootaround and Lenny gathered the team around, I happened to be at the shootaround that day. He said, 'Walton, are you going to be able to play or not?' Walton said, 'No, coach, I don't think I can play, maybe by the time we get home after this road trip, but not tonight.' [Wilkens] said, 'That's enough. I've been waiting for you to tell me to play, we need you out there. If you can't play, I don't want you to sit on the bench. I don't want you to be anywhere near the team tonight. If anything, go over there and sit with Schonz.'

Lo and behold, that night, I'm doing the broadcast. In those days, a long time ago, I didn't have another voice with me, a guy who would do the commentary. It was me. So Walton sat down with me. Now, if you recall the story of the great Bill Walton, he had a stuttering problem. A terrible stuttering problem. His days at UCLA, John Wooden, in essence, would not allow Bill to come out of the locker room after the game and be with the media because he couldn't express himself. That went on in the early days of the Portland Trail Blazers franchise.

And then, as he sat with me that night, he had so many good things to say about the game of basketball. He loves, and I love, and everybody in this room loves. That whetted his appetite to get into the broadcasting

PDFmyURL.com business. So he spent time with me, we worked on things, he got the great Marty Glickman and other people to help him. As time went on, he began to express himself more and more and better and better. And lo and behold, now that he can talk, we can't shut him up. I love him, Bill Walton.

My thanks to the committee for this selection tonight. Thanks to the fans. Some of my family is over there. Some of the fans from Portland are here tonight. And our front office, and that's great. Terrific... I thank you very, very much for allowing me to be here tonight.

Blazers Exec Chad Buchanan Profiled In College Alumni Magazine

Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, has selected Portland Trail Blazers Director of College Scouting (formerly Acting GM) Chad Buchanan for one of its Success St ories alumni prof iles.

Buchanan, who played two sports at Simpson and graduated in 1995, talks a bit about the last few years with the Blazers and how Simpson helped prepare him for his job. ------"It kind of fell apart for us," Buchanan says. "There’s definitely some luck involved." ... "It’s incredibly challenging," he says. "It’s fun, but there’s definitely a lot of pressure in professional sports. You’re evaluating personnel and trying to make the right decisions, because they’re very expensive decisions you’re making for your organization – and if you’re wrong on one or two, that can add up." ... "I think the one thing Simpson helped prepared me for is that you can’t sit in a classroom and hide," he says. "You have to interact with people and learn how to deal with different personalities. You have to be able to communicate and express yourself, which is critical for my job, dealing with coaches, agents, players and other executives. You can’t just be a number at Simpson like you can at a big school. You have to become somebody when you to go to a smaller school, and that’s really helped me with my job every day."

Haynes: Blazers Part Ways With Development Asst. Dan Dickau Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com report s that the Portland Trail Blazers and new coach Terry Stotts will not bring back player development assistant Dan Dickau, who spent one season with the team. However,

Last week, the Blazers announced the hiring of Dale Osbourne, who joins three other new assistants who were hired earlier in August . The Blazers announced Stotts' hiring back on August 7.

"Everything has been great so far. I was really happy with how minicamp and Summer League went. I thought our team competed well and we did a good job out in Vegas. I'm excited to get out there soon."

What do you want t o improve?

"I think the long stretch of the season is going to be somewhat tough to deal with but I've always been able to get through it. I always keep my body in very good shape and take care of nutrition and take care of sleeping. I'm just going to come in every single day and learn and work as hard as possible."
