IrHERL{S, the National Day of is an annual event establisbed by an Act of Congress which encourages Americans to pray for our nation, its people, and its leaders; and

WH L'RLAc'~ many observances are held across our country which concentrate on the need to pray for those in leadership at all levels of national, church, and educational areas of influence; and

1I''HL'RE4S, days of prayer have been called for since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation; and

II'HI:R/:'AS, in 1863, called for such a day; and

II''HLR/:,Ac\ officially, the National was established as an annual event by an Act of Congress in 1952, and was signed into law by President Truman; and

IrHLRF4S, the law was amended in 1988, and signed by President Ronald Reagan, establishing the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday of each year; and

IrHLREAS, the National Day of Prayer belongs to all Americans and every American can observe the National Day of Prayer in his or her own way; and

1\'1/LRLAS, Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Jewish leaders are included in National Day of Prayer's expression of this national event celebrated in Washington D.C., and throughout the nation.
