In the afterword to Avengers of the Moon author Allen ...By ArkayIn the afterword to Avengers of the Moon author Allen Steele writes about his discovery of Captain Future and the Futuremen in a Popular paperback reprint he found on a drugstore spinner rack at the age of 11. His introduction to the series was similar to mine, which is to say, I anxiously awaited his revival of the characters in a new adventure.Avengers of the Moon is as much a reimagining of the castrsquo;s origin story as it is a new adventure, with both tightly woven together into a seamless . Steelersquo;s novel is remarkably true to the seriesrsquo; roots, but updates its science and technology from its 1930s roots. The entire cast is present and accounted for: Curt Newton, Otho, Grag, Simon Wright, Joan Randall, Ezra Gurney, and Ul Quorn. They remain true to their characters, but updated with current social sensibilities. Even the inane infighting between Otho and Grag, along with their pets Eek and Oog are present, but Steele wisely tones it down several notches. Itrsquo;s there for a moment of nostalgia, and then he thankfully moves on with the story. For fans, I think Avengers of the Moon rates five stars. Without the history, a newcomer wonrsquo;t feel the same sense of wonder as each old friend makes their entrance, and may not have the same appreciation for their characterizations. Despite handling the task very well, it does require breaking into the momentum of the story. Now that the whole crew has been recast, herersquo;s hoping the next one will rocket us into the future and never let go until its last page.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. RESOUNDING CAPTAIN FUTURE NOVEL!By Joseph Baneth AllenJust finished reading "Avengers Of The Moon" by Allen Steele, released by TOR Books. As frequent readers of my reviews here on Facebook know, I do automatically deduct two stars out of five from a movie, book, and/or audio if the audio, book, and/or movie promotes and advocates the Great Global Climate Change Hoax - which is a shame because Allen Steele has written a great prequel to the Captain Future series, and while I don't honestly know if Allen Steele actually believes in the Great Global Climate Change Hoax - note to authors who do: under the auspices of the Great Global Climate Change Hoax, the production hardcover and paperback books increases the so-called carbon footprint and adds further destruction to the planet - Steele does devote a couple of paragraphs to the hoax. It would be interesting to know if this was his own idea or a request from Jennifer Gunnels, who took over the task editing "Avengers Of The Moon" when David Hartwell passed away.I discovered the adventures of Captain Future and his Futuremen in the novels chronicling his adventures amongst the shelves of the section in Twice Told Tales Bookstore in Jacksonville, North Carolina when I was a young boy nearly 40 years ago. I'm also listening to the Captain Future audios by Radio Archives. So when I learned that Allen Steele - who had won a for his Novella "The Death of Captain Future." which looks at a fan obsessed with all things Captain Future, had actually written a prequel novel to the Captain Future series, I was eagerly waiting to read it.Steel does update the Captain Future universe and sets it in the 24th Century instead of that far-flung future of 2015.. Simon, Grag, and Otho are fully fleshed out with different personalities and Joan Randall definitely isn't the girl IPF agent in distress who needs constant rescuing."Avengers Of The Moon" chronicles the patch Curt Newton took in becoming Captain Future. It also chronicles the first meeting between Curt Newton and his archnemsis Ul Quorn; in addition to introducing the mystery of the Dancing Denebians - who left a seemingly untranslatable message on Earth's Moon.I hope that Allen Steele will write a few more Captain Future novels. Steele pays great homage to the original Captain Future novels while creating a new path for additional yet-to- be chronicled adventures.Allen Steele did write an Excellent Five Star Story.Yet, he decided for whatever reasons to make a phony political statement. So, hence I am deducting two of those five stars.Highly Recommended!Three Stars Only for Steele's promoting the Great Global Climate Change Hoax.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 1940s space opera for the 21st centuryBy Kindle CustomerExciting, imaginative, and very respectful of the original 1940s space opera upon which it's based, Allen Steele's "Avengers of the Moon" brings 's Captain Future to life for today's space opera readers. I enjoyed this as much as any science fiction I've read this year, and it was wonderful to once more make the acquaintance of Curt Newton, his Futuremen, and all the cast of characters from Captain Future Magazine. Bravo.

Allen Steele, author of Arkwright, gives us a thrilling piece of science fiction pulp with Avengers of the MoonCurt Newton has spent most of his life hidden from the rest of humankind, being raised by a , an android, and the disembodied brain of a renowned scientist. This unlikely trio of guardians has kept his existence a closely guarded secret after the murder of Curt's parents.Curt's innate curiosity and nose for trouble inadvertently lead him into a plot to destabilize the Solar Coalition and assassinate the president. There's only one way to uncover the evil mastermind?Curt must become Captain Future. With the permission of the Edmond Hamilton estate, Allen Steele revives the exciting adventures of Captain Future. ldquo;A rollicking tribute to Edmond Hamilton's classic Captain Future stories.rdquo;?Kirkus sldquo;A wonderful combination of nostalgic space opera, humor, and contemporary storytelling.rdquo;?Galaxy's Edgeldquo;Steele combines the charm of those classic swashbuckling space adventures many of us grew up on with questions about artificial intelligence and space colonization that we face today.rdquo; ?Amazing Storiesldquo;A fun and snappy read.rdquo;?Bibliosanctum"An authentic, heartfelt and evocative novel....Blending melodrama with restraint, mixing tragedy and comedy, and hewing to tradition while simultaneously honoring contemporary tastes, this book deserves to find a big audience amongst old and young readers alike."?Locus About the AuthorALLEN STEELE worked as a freelance journalist before becoming a prolific science fiction writer. He has garnered multiple Hugo Awards for his novellas and novelettes, and his novel Obital Decay won the for Best First Novel. In 2013, he received the Robert A. Heinlein Award in recognition of his fiction promoting space exploration.
