Court Hearing Master Patricia Doninger turns her back to the lady and the marshal’s event and ignores the yelling and crying of the woman in distress. The video gave the impression that Court Hearing Master Patricia Doninger is afraid of the marshals and that is why she allows such cowardly behavior in her court. Court officials have not conducted an investigation into whether or not the Court Hearing Master should be disciplined for her lack of interest in the woman’s well-being, but court officials pressured Lt. Everyone who has been in any court, including Family Court – even if it was not their case being heard – more than one time knows that cell phones are not allowed in court; and as anyone with a badge and a gun does, the marshals impose their rule as it is best for them. In 2009 she was named National Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators, whose director said that Hall had “turned Atlanta into a model of urban school re- form.” Atlanta was often cited as a success story by Education Secre- tary Arne Duncan. The story uncovered by Georgia’s investigation into whether there had been cheating – certainly one of the best-funded and most exten- sive investigations to date, with two special prosecutors appointed by Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue – showed a different picture. Using whistleblowers and hidden wires, investigators uncovered a widespread system of corruption in which many teachers would alleg- edly gather in rooms during testing weeks to erase incorrect answers and replace them with correct ones. At Parks Middle School, where investigators said some of the worst cheating took place, Principal Christopher Waller – one of the 35 people indicted, and formerly a principal lauded by Hall – allegedly orga- nized “cheating parties” with teachers. Other defendants, say prosecu- tors, are guilty of lying to investigators, covering up wrongdoing, and retaliating against those who didn’t comply with their wishes. “Atlanta was shocking because of the scale of it and the tragedy of it,” said Gregory Cizek, an education professor at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, who studies cheating. “Some of the least able students were being told, ‘you’re doing just fine.’That was a horrible tragedy in terms of the scale and the harm it did to kids’ edu- cation.” Still, Atlanta was certainly not alone. The former El Paso superin- tendent was recently sent to prison for encouraging low-performing students to drop out. Ohio is currently investigating whether some schools intentionally “scrubbed” low-performing students from their rolls so their test scores didn’t count. And cheating was discovered in Washington, D.C., schools – also cited as models of turnaround. In an extensive 2011 USA Today investigation, reporters turned up multiple instances of extreme statistical anomalies and suspected cheating. That such cheating exists, given the incentives in the system, is not particularly surprising, said Professor Cizek. “Every walk of life has incentives in place that corrupt behavior, and it would be shocking if they didn’t apply to the context of education,” he said. “It’s remark- For Keystone XL foes, oozing Canadian able in education that so many people do play by the rules.” That said, Cizek and others say it would be a shame if the lesson out ofAtlanta is to discount standardized tests and accountability, given crude in Arkansas spill is black gold the valuable information that educators, parents, and students can get The rupture of an ExxonMobil pipeline that sent a gooey black stream of heavy Canadian crude oozing from them. across lawns and driveways in suburban Mayflower, Ark., last Friday has been seized upon by opponents “It would be analogous to saying, we’ve discovered there’s voter of the Keystone XL pipeline as proof that the controversial project should be halted. fraud, so let’s get rid of elections,” Cizek said. “There’s always going to be a backlash, but by and large, [testing data] is high-quality infor- mation we can stand behind.” Fannie May Instead, he’d like to see a culture – starting with top leadership – that emphasizes professional integrity; a more varied system of ac- (Continued from Page 1) And, in the housing market in “Actions [by the company] have countability that uses multiple measures to gauge teachers’ progress, was taken over in a federal conser- particular, Fannie and Freddie helped... to support the housing re- without focusing so narrowly on test scores; and more serious scrutiny vatorship in 2008. Before lawmakers reached agreement in Hartford, Conn., parents from Sandy Hook Elementary lobbied them to ask for a tough gun law. Many of the parents also appeared with President Obama when he called on Congress to pass new laws. Not surprisingly, not all the Sandy Hook parents agree with the gun control laws. At its press conference, the NRA task force had Mark Mattiolli who lost his 6-year-old son James at Sandy Hook. “As parents, we send our kids off to school, and there are certain expectations and, obviously, at Sandy Hook, those expectations weren’t met,’ said Mr. Mattioli.
