This newsletter is published twice a year, or as the news warrants. 1 ISSUE 1 • 2020-2021 Notable Student Activities Last spring Katie Kitchen was elected MC Student Government Association President and Taiylor Williamson was elected Vice-President, and Alexander Lersch was selected Parliamentarian. After her election as President, Katie stated that she aimed to make the SGA “a more visible and accessible channel between students and administration.” Joe Tucker, Trent Anthony, Claire Davis, Tyler Walker, Natalie Johnson, and Elizabeth Vigue were elected SGA Class Representatives for 2020.

Katie Kitchen completed a summer Investigative Studies research project titled “Emotional Rhetoric and Presidential Approval” that examined the way emotional language in news articles, which are presented as objective, impacts US presidential approval ratings. She used both content and statistical analysis on articles mainly from the New York Times from 2001-2018. The project was supervised by Dr. Morgan.

Rachel Ewing received the Capstone Award for her research paper titled “Level of Democracy and Civil War Onset.” She also received the Sherrill Cleland Prize in Leadership, the Ione Congdon Hammond Memorial Prize, the William Bay Irvine Medal, the Merrill Reeves Patterson Medal, and was named a Pioneer Scholar.
