FSM CHURCH NEWS

Well Christmas has gone, and now we look forward to Lent and Easter, with Easter Eggs already in the shops, because as we all know they are desperate to sell anything at the moment. All our Christmas services were very well supported, and thanks to everyone who came along and enjoyed the spirit and meaning of Christmas.

The Church was full with 100 or so at the combined Fornhams Carol Service when we sang the old favourites Ding Dong Merrily, Holly and the Ivy, O little town of Bethlehem, to mention only a few, together with the usual Nine Lessons of the Christmas Story. Thanks to all those who joined us to read a Lesson, from various clubs and organisations. Thanks to Reverend Mary Elliott for standing in as organist. Clearly everyone enjoyed it , especially the families and children.

We started with Once in Royal Davids City, with the traditional first verse solo sung by Thomas Upton this year, very capably. The Choir formed for the service sung two pieces beautifully and our thanks go to them, clearly they had been practising hard under choir leader Celia Jeal. They will be preparing for Easter Services in March probably, and if anyone is interested in joining them, do let us know. Afterwards many stayed to enjoy mulled wine and mince pies, to round off the service very nicely.

The Crib Service on Christmas Eve at 4pm was even better supported, with some 150 all together (that meant standing for some unfortunately, we seem to need a bigger Church at this time of year). To start the children each placed the various figures in the model stable. Then they joined in our Nativity Story, dressed to suit the occasion as Jesus, Mary, Kings, Shepherds or Angels, and how well they all looked, and I’m sure made their parents feel very proud. Certainly many photos were taken for the family albums.

After we enjoyed more mulled wine and mince pies, in the Woolpack this time, courtesy of Graham and Clare, to whom we extend our thanks, on behalf of everyone who packed in. Also to thank them for allowing parking in the pub car park, and apologies for filling it up so quickly, hope it didn’t upset the paying customers!

The Christmas Day and Midnight Mass services attracted another 100, where Holy Communion was held for all those wishing to feel the true embodiment of Christ’s Birth.

In fact attendances at Services throughout 2011 went up 13%, so do come along if you can, you will be very welcome. See the notice board for dates, as with all the other Churches in the Benefice to cover, services are normally held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 10am.

Our grateful thanks must go to Reverends David Burrell and Sylvia Bareham for preparing and fulfilling these and all the other services throughout the seven Churches in the Lark Valley Benefice.

Thanks also to all those who decorated the Church beautifully with flowers, holly and candles, together with our lovely Christmas Tree.

Our next Book Sale is on Saturday 11th February , in the Church, from 11am till about 3pm . Delicious cakes and savouries, coffee and teas, will be available. Do drop in and browse through the 1200 or so books, of great variety, and enjoy some refreshment and friendly chat, you will be very welcome. If you have some nice clean books in good condition you would like to donate, please bring them along Saturday morning, or we can collect.

We will be holding a Jumble Sale on Saturday 24th March , in the Village Hall, at 1pm. There are always some good bargains to be had. If you have any good clothes, etc, or bric a brac, you would like to donate (even unwanted Christmas presents, dare I say ! ) please bring then along from about 10:00am, or we can collect.

Theatre Royal re-launches Theatrebus service in conjunction with world premiere of Stagefright

In conjunction with the Theatre Royal’s newest original production — Michael Punter’s Stagefright — the Theatre are pleased to an- nounce the re-launch of Theatrebus — the most hassle-free way to enjoy this thrilling new production.

A ghoulish slice of Victorian spectacle, Stagefright follows one nerve- jangling night in the company of Sir Henry Irving (the greatest actor of his age), and literary legend Bram Stoker, as their seemingly unshakable friendship is put to the test by a murderous spirit stalking the deserted corridors of London’s renowned Lyceum Theatre.

The Stagefright Theatrebus service offers return coach travel from across Suffolk to the doorstop of the Theatre Royal, and so allowing you the chance to enjoy your night out without worrying about parking, or having a cheeky tipple in the Theatre’s fantastic Greene Room bar.

The Theatre have arranged buses to pick-up along nine different routes which will get patrons to the Theatre for around 7pm, leaving enough time for a relaxing glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage before Stagefright begins at 7.30pm. Post-show, all buses will leave the theatre 15 minutes after the curtain, at around 10pm.

Tickets for the Stagefright Theatrebus package are £23 or £11.50 for under 26s. Prices include tickets for Stagefright ; the return bus, a free programme and a drink upon arrival.

FORNHAM OVER 60’S CLUB

Dec 6th Our Christmas Party went well with music by Wally Leeks on organ and poetry readings by Tom Rowe. This was followed by party games and a discussion about the year ahead.

Dec 13th The Christmas Lunch was held at The Three Horseshoes in Cockfield. This was a splendid lunch thanks to our host Donna and her staff. Thank you to our members who shared their cars and picked up other members.

Jan 3rd The January meeting had a lower than average turnout perhaps due to the weather and the time of year. We were expecting a talk by Catriona Brinkley from The Chocolate Shop in St Johns Street, but unfortunately she did not turn up, due to a failure in communications.

We resorted to Plan B - the Chairman gave members advance information on the programme for 2012 – 2013, there was a short impromptu talk by a member and a few games of bingo.

FORNHAM GARDEN CLUB

Seeds and Fruit was the theme of the talk and digital slideshow presented to us at our meeting on December 13th by Richard Hobbs. Richard is a botanist, conducts a series of walking holidays in Europe and beyond, and hold the national collection of Muscari (Grape Hyacinth) at his home near Norwich. To help bring some warmth to a very cold evening, the slideshow began with exotic plants growing in sunshine and high temperatures, such a s bananas and prickly pears, through to the cork oaks of Portugal and Spain, and back to the UK to include, amongst others, clematis, honeysuckle and less widely grown pomegranate.

Explaining the role that wind, water, insects, birds and some animals play in pollinating plants Richard also showed us a number of plants whose fruit we would look at and call it seed one such plant being the common clover. In conclusion using two plants that are particularly relevant at this time of year, the mistletoe and ivy. Richard pointed out that the majority of mistletoe to be found in the world produces red berries (just our in the UK are white) and that ivy much maligned is a wonderful plant to grow. It not only supplies a habitat for many species of birds and insects when it is grown up trees and fences the flowers provide a supply of nectar for insects late in the year. The berries are a source of food for birds in winter and the foliage is so useful for making Christmas decorations such as wreaths, table decorations etc.

A fact filled evening from a very good speaker was brought to a conclusion with the serving of mince pies, sausage rolls and hot mulled wine.

Our annual Dinner is being held just at the Bugle is going to press and our meetings continue in the village hall as follows.

A meeting of the Parish Council was held on 19th January 2012 in the Village Hall, Fornham St Martin.

2. MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 17th NOVEMBER 2011 The Minutes were signed as a true record.

3. POLICE REPORT No report had been submitted.

4. COUNTY COUNCILLOR'S REPORT The Chairman welcomed Councillor Hopfensperger and in addition to the written report which is attached and forms part of these minutes, she had the following to report:-

a. Barton Hill SCC had agreed to place four 30mph roundels on the road at an approximate cost of £80 each. Councillor Hopfensperger said she would be pleased to fund this from her Locality or Quality of Life Budget. Councillors were unanimously in favour of this scheme and the Chairman thanked Councillor Hopfensperger for her offer of financial help which was greatly appreciated.

b. Additional wheelie bin for Old Hall Lane Councillor Hopfensperger said that the bin was scheduled to be delivered on 20th January. c. Fordham Lock Bridge Strengthening work on the bridge had been placed on the 2012/13 list of works. The weight restriction would still apply after the work had been completed. d. Widening of footpath from the Village to the bottom of Barton Hill Councillor Hopfensperger said she has given this some thought and as it would be an enormous project, she felt that it would have to be done in sections, probably over a year or two. She would obtain costings and offered to fund this from her Quality of Life Budget. Councillors were delighted and thought this excellent news.

The Chairman thanked Councillor Hopfensperger very much. e. Safer Crossings SCC had confirmed to her that they felt that the position of the proposed crossing was the correct one. (referring to Matters Arising – it had been agreed to drop this idea) f. Flashing signs Refer to Matters Arising: Councillor Hopfensperger said she would be willing to fund some of the cost of the signs from her Quality of Life Budget. Again the Chairman said that this kind offer would be gladly accepted. It was agreed that permanent signs were the preferred choice.. The Clerk would seek advice from Westcotec Ltd (Mr Crowe) as to where they could be sited and to accept his offer to meet with Councillors. g. Speed Limits Councillor Hopfensperger said that the rules covering speed limits were becoming more strict and new criteria made it more difficult to change limits. On the de-restriction issue, Councillors were unanimous in agreeing that with the flashing signs it would now be appropriate to monitor the success of the signs in cutting down speeding in the Street.

h. HGV/Weight Restriction Councillor Hopfensperger said that there was to be a meeting on 3rd February to discuss these issues.

i. Cold calling This was on Councillor Hopfensperger's full report. The Clerk would ask the Bugle editors to put a piece in about this matter.

j. Broadband SCC have set aside £4million over a four year period (in conjunction with Norfolk) to improve Broadband services.

k. Budgets St Edmundsbury Borough/SCC budgets would be finalised next month.

In addition to the above, Councillor Hopfensperger spoke about the library service changes, shared services with Forest Heath and the new chief executive's vacancy which would be filled by 15th February.

Councillor Butler asked the Councillor about possible funding for the various improvements/repairs to the Village Hall. She said she may be able to give some assistance from her Locality Budget and gave him details of other avenues for funding. Councillor Buxton was concerned about the street light at the top of Old Hall Lane which had been reported as being in need of attention. The Clerk had received confirmation that this was being attended to but Councillor Hopfensperger said she would chase this up.

Councillor Buxton said the library service no longer had printed information about dates, times and locations of their service. Councillor Hopfensperger said she would look into this. The Chairman said there were no repeater 30mph signs from the Tollgate to the Fornham sign. Councillor Hopfensperger said she would look into this.

Councillor Youngs said he had been contacted about the amount of rubbish along the footpath at the bottom of Barton Hill through to Russell Baron Road. Councillor Hopfensperger

said we should contact the Borough to request a new litter bin. The Chairman thanked Councillor Hopfensperger for attending and for her report and in particular for her generous offer of financial assistance.

7. MATTERS ARISING a. Safer Crossings An email from Linda and Ian Elkington had been received stating their opposition to this idea. In the light of Item (b) it was unanimously agreed to drop this idea) b. A Reduction in the speed limit and calming measures The Clerk had obtained costings for the flashing warning lights and after discussing the merits of various options it was agreed to obtain the permanent ones, fixed to a lamp post and powered from the mains. It was unanimously agreed to have four – Barton Hill, entrance and exit of Village and near the golf Club. (see under County Councillor f) c. Jubilee Celebrations Councillor Jane Hubbard would progress this matter. d. Illegal Advertising Boards – Woolpack Councillor Hopfensperger said that A boards were covered by three laws. The Clerk would contact SCC again to see if they had received the copy of Greene King's deeds to finally decide where their property ends and the public footpath begins. e. HGV Issues Already covered in County/Borough Councillor's report f. Litter picking equipment The Clerk had requested a hoop, picker and high viz jacket.

8. COMMITTEE REPORTS SALC – Nothing to report

Village Hall Councillor Butler said that quotes had been received for double glazing windows and for new doors for approximately £6k and another quote for refitting the kitchen, toilets and floor in the sum of £9k. Quotes were being sought for halogen heaters to replace the old ones which were faulty and reaching the end of the line. Some damp prevention measures had been carried out and heaters were to be purchased to help control the damp issues.

Playing field – Nothing

Tree Warden The Chairman reported that two large trees had fallen across the footpath which runs alongside the bypass. The Clerk would report this.

Rights of Way It was thought that M & TJ's had not carried out the work in cutting back and generally tidying the path from the Village to the bottom of Barton Hill. The Clerk would chase them on this. SCC had responded to the Clerk's email of 25th October 2011 asking that they, as in past years, fund this work. They gave a reference number, stating that a full reply would be forthcoming within 20 days. Nothing has been heard since, so the Clerk will get on to them. Councillor Buxton said she wished to flag up her concern about the narrowness of the road leading from the Culford roundabout to the roundabout on the A134. (the avenue of oaks). She felt that it was difficult for large vehicles to pass one another. Councillor Butler that this may be assisting in keeping speeding down on that stretch of road. The Clerk would inform Guy Smith of SCC Highways.

Erection of (1) porch (2) single storey infill extension (3) single storey rear extension and (4) first floor side extension as amended by plan no. 11-34-02 received 2nd December 2011 altering the position of the first floor window. GRANTED

The following application was considered on 1st December 2011 SE/11/1381 Mr Elsdon, 6 Culford Road. Erection of (1) two storey side extension incorporating integral garage (following demolition of existing garage) and (2) conservatory to rear (3) porch. NO OBJECTION

The following applications were considered:

SE/11/1504 Fornham House Care Residence. Rebuild sections of flint wall NO OBJECTION

SE/11/1559 Mr E Rollings, 6 Turnberry Drive. Erection of a single storey rear extension. A copy of a letter of objection had been sent by the Borough for the Council's information. Councillors looked at the plans and it was far from being clear as to where exactly the complainant's property was situated. It was agreed that the Clerk should speak to the officer in charge of this application to seek clarification and to ask if the complaints were of a material nature. If that was the case, the Parish Council would object to the application.

9. FLOODLIGHTING THE CHURCH The original suggestion was for the floodlighting to be for the Queen's Jubilee but since that would cover a very short period is was unanimously agreed to drop the idea. It was however felt that it would be nice to have the tower floodlit. It was thought that this may deter drug users and thieves. Councillor Buxton said she wished to place on record her objection and pointed out that in 2006, this was done and one could not see the Church and neighbours were upset and were against it.

An email from Mr Barker was circulated and he was totally opposed to the suggestion. It was agreed to ask the Clerk to write to the PCC to see if they are in favour. If so, the Parish Council would seek advice on the type of lighting applicable. Councillor Butler said Mr David Yates (a Churchwarden) was in favour of floodlighting.

An email had been received from Mr Yates regarding a car being advertised for sale at Flint Cottages (on the old Thetford Road) The Clerk had reported this and had been advised that the enforcement officer was dealing with it.

The Borough had sent the Rural 2031 drop-in invitation.

SALC had asked for nominations for someone to attend a Buckingham Palace Garden Party. On the proposition of Councillor Jane Hubbard, seconded by Councillor Forster, it was agreed that the Chairman should ask ex Councillor David Payne if his name could be put forward. This was to reflect his long association with the Village, the Church and the Parish Council. Should he not accept, Councillor Butler said he

would like to propose Mr Yates. All Councillors were in agreement with this suggestion.

A letter addressed to the Chairman from Mr David Yates had been circulated relating to the Remembrance Day Service and the wreath laying. After discussions, it was agreed that in future years, the Chairman should lay the wreath and payment for it will be made by Councillors and Clerk. Councillors would make every effort to attend and support this important service. The Clerk to make a note re ordering a wreath and the date of the service for 2012.

Emails had been received from three parishioners regarding the crow/rook problem. Councillors discussed this at length and decided that it was really not up to the Parish Council to be involved in this issue and it should be left to individuals to take what ever legal action they felt proportionate to the problem.

Councillor Buxton wondered what was happening about the planter on Barton Hill. The Clerk would look up the details of the lady who volunteered for this task.

There being no further business, the Chairman thanked Councillors for their attendance and closed the meeting.

HOW TO PLAY Each game contains four rows (or racks) of seven Scrabble® tiles from a typical game. For each row, form a word of between two and seven letters and write it in the blank squares provided. Blank tiles can be used for any letter, but, of course, they have no score. FORNHAM LADIES CLUB

We enjoyed a very pleasant evening together on 7th December when we gathered at The Woolpack in Fornham St Martin to share a Christmas Dinner. We were made very welcome, looked after beautifully and fed extremely well! A grand time was had by all. Once again Hilda proved to be the supreme champion cracker puzzle solver (you know, those fiendish metal puzzles!).

Our venue for our January meeting was a very warm and welcoming room at Culford School. Our speaker was Mr. Robert Davie, Senior Master and Physics Teacher. His subject was "Why Walk a Thousand Miles?". The answer was soon apparent. Whilst staying with his parents one Christmas he took a book from their bookcase entitled "The Pilgrimage to Santiago" by Edwin Mullins. The first paragraph claimed that certain places and certain objects possessed unusual powers and one was a better person for visiting them. He was thus inspired to make the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela to the Cathedral dedicated to St James the Apostle, and containing his tomb. The cathedral dates from the ninth century and, together with Jerusalem and Rome, is one of the three important pilgrimages of the Christian faith. Robert’s pilgrimage had to be undertaken in five parts because he was limited by the time available in the school Summer holidays.

There are four starting places of the Pilgrims Way in France - Paris, Vezelay, Le Puy en Velay and Arles. The 500 mile Way converges at the Pyrenees border of France and Spain. The Way in France is randomly marked by red and white horizontal stripes. The 500 mile section in Spain runs parallel to the Northern coast and every twist and turn is marked by a yellow arrow. Many of these places on the Way also indicate the distance to Santiago.

Pilgrims can have a ‘passport’ which is officially stamped at several places on the Way, including the simple hostels and refuges where pilgrims can sleep. Provided one has sufficient stamps covering at least 100k, they will receive a Certificate on arrival at the cathedral. Many thousands of pilgrims gather here and at certain times the huge censer in the cathedral, that is suspended from the roof and takes eight men to control it, is raised and swung until it reaches the climax of a 180 degree swing along the length of the cathedral. This is an awesome sight - shown to us by Robert from a YouTube clip.

NO COLD CALLING ZONES

The ongoing crackdown on rogue traders and uninvited doorstep sellers in Suffolk has continued with the launch of the county’s latest No Cold Calling Zone in Felixstowe.

The ones (NCCZs) are set up in areas where residents have identified they do not want visits from unsolicited or cold callers. The zones are created in partnership with the county council’s Trading Standards team, the police, neighbourhood watch and local residents, and are marked with signs in the street and sticker displayed in residents’ windows.
