He had witnessed four or five periodical revivals of religion in his parish. When he began his labours, there was no other, that he knew of, evangelical minister in all the province!”1 However, at the time of his death, Jarratt would be one of a growing number of Evangelical Anglican ministers in the province of Virginia. Although Anglicanism remained the established church for the first twenty three years of Jarratt’s ministry, the Great Awakening forcefully brought the message of Evangelicalism to the colonies. As the American Revolution neared, new ideas about political and religious freedom arose, and Evangelical dissenters continued to grow in numbers. Into this scene stepped Jarratt, his friend Archibald McRobert, and his student Charles Clay. These three men would distinguish themselves from other Anglican clergymen by emulating the characteristics of the Great Awakening in their ministries, showing tolerance in their relationships with other religious groups, and providing support for American freedoms. Devereux Jarratt, Archibald McRobert, and Charles Clay all lived and mainly ministered to communities in the Piedmont area.

    The Anglo-Catholic Tradition in Australian Anglicanism Dr David Hilliard Reader in History, Flinders University Adelaide, Australia Anglicanism in Australia has had many Anglo-Catholics but no single version of Anglo-Catholicism.1 Anglo-Catholics have comprised neither a church nor a sect, nor have they been a tightly organised party. Within a framework of common ideas about the apostolic succession, the sacraments and the central role of ‘the Church’ in mediating salvation, they were, and remain, diverse in outlook, with few organs or institutions to link them together and to promote common goals. Since the mid-nineteenth century, in Australia as in England, two very different trends in the movement can be identified.     GS 1764A Background Paper Private Members Motion “That this Synod express the desire that the Church of England be in communion with the Anglican Church in North America” Lorna Ashworth Summary It is my desire to give Synod an opportunity to hear about the unfair treatment of people who have continued to maintain the Anglican faith in doctrine, practice and worship, and to express their continuing fellowship with them as loyal Anglicans. An estimated $30 million has been spent on property litigation, and 491 clergy inhibited or deposed across the spectrum of church traditions. This includes the deposition of Bishop Bob Duncan of Pittsburgh, Bishop Henry Scriven and Dr James Packer, and the personal difficulties caused by the bringing of legal proceedings against laypeople. (Details of the Anglican Church in North America can be found on www.anglicanchurch-na.org ) For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to emphasize that the genesis of this motion lies entirely with myself in discussion with a handful of friends who are members of this Synod. The promise that computers and labour-saving technology would mean more leisure time for everyone now seems laughable in the face of statistics that clearly show most people are working harder and longer than ever. In the midst of that busyness, and the stress that comes with it, the Journal poses the question, have we forgotten Sabbath? “Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work” is the fourth commandment (Ex. 20:8–10a), but what does it mean in a society that can shop, work and chatter online 24/7? These relate to ongoing Anglican identity in the world and to the mission to which we are called. We deeply desire that godly humility and personal holiness be highly valued among us, and in particular characterize our clergy who as shepherds are to set an example for the flock of God. We envision Anglican clergy whose spirituality is rooted in the Word of God and prayer through the discipline of the Daily Offices. We desire excellence in liturgical practice that ensures our worship is decent, orderly and God honoring. We pray that our Anglican worldview be shaped by Christ rather than culture. We long that our clergy would proclaim the whole Gospel of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit, in word and deed, reflecting Jesus Christ in the world, and both hold and be held to biblical standards of morality. Spiritual formation is a process which is more than an introduction to the faith and practices of the Church. For Anglicans it must set the standard for a personal Rule of Life1 rooted in Scripture, the Catholic Creeds2, the Thirty-nine Articles, and the historic liturgy. Ordinands must understand and have integrated the key elements of Anglican life and practice and thus be able to model and convey the life of Christ to others.
