Welcome Class of 1990

t’s been twenty years since we assembled in , basking in the June sun while receiving our diplomas from President Gray. We saw many milestones while at MIT, from the Iend of the Cold War and the beginning of the fall of Apartheid to Star Trek: The Next Generation, Seinfeld, and The Simpsons. Steffi Graf, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and the Jamaican Bobsled team were all at the top of their games. Ben Johnson and Pete Rose seemed to be, but then fell from grace. Nintendo and Tetris were everywhere.

Since then our respective journeys have taken us to nearly every corner of the globe as we’ve followed a variety of paths and demonstrated that our time at the Institute was merely the beginning. Regardless of where you are now or what you’ve done during the intervening years, much has likely changed for you, and despite ever-present social media we sometimes fi nd that we’ve lost touch with our friends. Reunions can be a catalyst for renewing those ties, and sometimes allow us to get to know others with whom we weren’t as close.

We hope that you enjoy this book, and will take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about your fellow classmates. Undoubtedly, some of the information will surprise you, and hopefully you’ll agree that our class is an eclectic mix of unique individuals who defy convention. It is a common denominator that binds us together as the Institute’s 123rd graduating class. And while it seems a long way down the road, it will be even more interesting to see just how much more we’ve changed when 2040 rolls around. We look forward to reconnecting!

Warm regards, The Class of 1990 Reunion Committee

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: I went straight from undergrad into grad school at MIT in Computer Science. It was a fantastic experience, but a long one. I fi nally got my PhD in 1999. I went to work for an MIT spinoff startup in Kendall Square right out of grad school. I quickly decided there wasn’t much of a future there, so I switched to another MIT spinoff startup, Akamai Technologies. I’ve been there 10 years now, and it has been a whole other education too see a company go from dotcom darling to one struggling to survive the bust to one that is today a critical component of the Internet. In 2003, I married Caroline Yang, and since then, we’ve had two daughters, Eleanor (4) and Christina (2). After almost 13 years of MIT and two startups, I thought I had stamina. Then, I realized nothing prepares you for kids!

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: Wow, 20 years is hard to imagine. Seems like just yesterday twenty by itself was old/big, let alone now having two decades pass us by. Since graduating I’ve taken a tour of duty through a range of industries to in essence fi gure out who I am and what I really like to do. I tried the technology sides of Consumer Packaged Goods, Management Consulting and Investment Banking and realized that I was getting labeled a great techie but I wanted to do more than just IT type of work. Given this, I knew I had no choice but to head across the river to get my MBA (HBS). There I fi nally learned how to complement quantitative rigor with the qualitative ability to articulate robustness of thought. It would have been great in the business world if every problem was an engineering one and there was a defi nitive right or wrong answer, but Harvard essentially taught me that if you can clearly articulate your thought process (in a gray world), people will assume the recommended answer is therefore the right one. This is how business decision making is made. It was a great a-ha time period and at least half of the value of the program came from the new friends and extended community I became a part of. While trying to fi gure out what I wanted to really be when I grew up, I came up with an idea to solve an age old consumer problem of hearing a great tune on the radio and then wondering, “who sings this?” and in-real-time delivering the answer and allowing the individual to purchase that tune/CD/album. This sent me down the path of doing a Summer Internship with the Wireless Bureau of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which then led to a 2nd year fi eld study to turn my idea into a start-up. Long story short, I became an Entrepreneur. Out of the 880 folks in my graduating class I was one of eight that went out and founded a VC backed startup. It was a great ride and the most I had ever learned, leading to write ups in Forbes and being on CNN etc. but by 2001 I got a bit tired of professionally begging for money and needed to settle down and start a family. I joined Microsoft and set about re-inventing myself from a B2C guy into a B2B one which was especially relevant during the dotcom/ dotbust time period. At the time, Microsoft had about 30k people but it was already very well established and successful. There I learned how a really big business is run (even then it was generating $1B a month in profi t!). Let’s just say that running your own thing and being part of a gigantic big thing are worlds apart and I felt like having been out of the “matrix”, I was now thrown back in. I knew how everything worked in the real- world, while my new co-workers all knew how to get the same thing done in the world within the Redmond campus. My years at Microsoft successfully expanded me from B2C to Enterprise/B2B and started me down the path of becoming a Corporatized Entrepreneur. Enterprise wise, I focused on Business Process and then Unifi ed Communications. At the time, Websphere, WebEx and IBM/Lotus Sametime were my biggest competitors as we began to disrupt in the world of offi ce communications. My time there was great and as

MIT Class of 1990 Reunion Book much as I loved the Pacifi c Northwest, the personal sacrifi ces were becoming too great. I had married my high school sweet heart right after I fi nished B-school and soon after joining Microsoft our son Jared arrived. For those of you raising a family, you all know, it’s much harder to do so when you’re family center of gravity is not where you’re living... and for us it was in the Northeast. So it was fi nally time to head back to the NYC area. At Avaya, which used to be Lucent and prior to that it was part of the original AT&T, I set about to expand desk dial-tone to mobile phones and PC’s. For Avaya, I kind of became the friendly competitor operating from within, which was a healthy catalyst for internal change. This led me to successfully prioritize and acquire a $15M start-up. It was great to be on the other side of the table since as we all know, entrepreneurs either love going public or getting acquired and now I understood it from the other side. The process of acquiring and integrating a start-up was a great one. The process too of then having Avaya go private via an LBO from Silverlake and TPG was another great one. Here I also started to work with and they too were great people to be working with and I’ll just leave it at that. Amidst the emerging recession, it became harder and harder for me to successfully innovate. Today I’m with Verizon Wireless and I’m focused on New Technologies and User Interface Design. I’ve always been passionate about mobility and in fact my start-up had been focused on wireless m-commerce, but of course it was about 10 years too early (doh!). Word to the wise in the start-up world, never be too early :-). With my start-up ConneXus, I used to sell to wireless carriers, at the time to Sprint PCS and AT&T and Verizon Wireless didn’t quite exist in it’s fully aggregated form yet. So it became ironic that I now spend a lot of my time working with venture backed start-ups who want to more effectively partner with Verizon. Much of my focus has been on preparing us for the new 4G world that we are about to enter/launch. It’s one thing for us to be on track to build the best 4g network in town, but the ecosystem to help realize the full potential of our 4G network won’t automatically happen around our launch schedule. To that extent, we created the 4G Venture Forum (www.4gvf.com), representing a consortium of 5 VC’s, Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson representing about $1B in infl uence able monies for investment. My team also designs the Verizon branded mobile experiences. We design it and then our R&D team/partners build it. A very healthy mix of ideation, innovation and visioneering. The most important thing is to turn the new ideas into reality and not just cool powerpoint ware/visuals so realization is a necessary part of our innovation work. It’s also great to be working directly with Venture Capitalists and viewing the market landscape with similar lens glasses. Anyway, so that’s what I’ve been up to. Cecilia, Jared (now 7 years old) and I are happy to be back on campus and we’re looking forward to reconnecting and making new friends.

I would love to receive advice/help from classmates regarding ___ or contact me if you need help/ advice regarding ___: If you or a friend/family member need career guidance, I’m happy to assist. Many folks have helped me along the way and having the right advice at the right time can make all the difference. Basic questions like, am I an entrepreneur? should I start my own business? Is going to a top MBA program necessary/valuable? How do I get into HBS? I can’t provide any guarantees but I’m happy to help our community here.

I would love to receive advice/help from classmates regarding ___ or contact me if you need help/ advice regarding ___: Advice/help: I help high-intensity women who perform at a high level to get their edge back and have both more joy and more achievement by moving/dancing to their natural rhythms for just 11 minutes at a time. I’m interested in knowing what the biggest challenges are in these women’s lives. www.freemotioncoach.com

Anything else (such as pop-culture elements of the late 80s that I do or don’t miss): Defi nitely do not miss leg warmers. I don’t care how hard the 80s come back, I also will never wear slouch socks again!

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: Wow, can’t remember the last time I wrote in.... 2009 was a big year: I had a baby, got a tenure-track job, and moved (back) to the east coast. My husband Jan van de Mortel and I welcomed Tessel Michelle Coppola on June 27, 2009. She is named for a woman who was named for a Dutch island (google “Tesselschade” for a cool story). On Jan 1, 2010 I started as an assistant professor in Psychology and Linguistics at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. After being a city girl all my life, it’s a bit strange to have cows and chickens as neighbors, but it is so beautiful here that I don’t miss the pace and conveniences of city life. We started working on our garden this weekend-- can’t wait to cook with all those fresh veggies! Since 1994, I’ve been traveling to Nicaragua fairly regularly to do psycholinguistic fi eld work. That pretty much means that I drive around in a jeep looking for deaf people who are inventing their own gesture languages to communicate with their hearing family members and neighbors (they don’t have access to a conventional sign language used by a community). I also collaborate on documenting the changes in Nicaraguan Sign Language (a new indigenous community sign language) that emerged in the late 1970s in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. So, after graduating (a bit late, in 1991), I was one of those people who just couldn’t seem to leave MIT/Cambridge. But that fi rst research trip to Nicaragua in 1994 inspired me to go to graduate school at the University of Rochester, and I followed that with a move to Chicago in 2002 to do a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago. Right around that time I met Jan, who is a former O-1 visa holder (title: “Alien of Extraordinary Ability”). (Is it possible to fall in love with someone’s visa title?) Anyway, it all worked out well for us: Jan moved to Chicago from the Netherlands in 2003 and started working as a chess instructor (he’s an international master). And no, I don’t play, but I do keep up with the gossip of the chess world (yes, it exists!).

I hope everyone has a blast at the reunion! I’m disappointed I can’t make it.

I would love to receive advice/help from classmates regarding ___ or contact me if you need help/ advice regarding ___: I would love to get advice on expanding the non-profi t organization in Nicaragua that I founded (I have to say my MIT education didn’t really prepare me for that!).

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After graduation, I went to work for Mobil in southern NJ for 3 years, then left engineering to go to law school at Georgetown. Upon graduation, I went to NYC and spent the next 10 years in private practice, specializing in intellectual property law in biotech/pharma. In 2006, I went in-house to Praxair, an industrial gas company, then with the 2008 recession, I went back to private practice until I joined Kraft Foods in 2009. I am currently Senior Patent Counsel and support three business units: Snacks (which recently became Snacks & Confectionery with the acquisition of Cadbury), Beverages and Grocery. I support brands such as Oreo, Wheat Thins, Triscuit, Ritz, Fig Newtons, Planters, Maxwell House, Crystal Light, Kool-Aid, Tang, Jell-O, Cool Whip, A-1, and many more. So much more fun than air separation! While all of that was happening, I met my husband, Jeff Slater, in 1993 when we were at Georgetown. We got married in 2000, moved to the ‘burbs in 2001, and have two children: Ian (age 5) and Lia (age 2). We are in New Rochelle, NY, just north of NYC. I got certifi ed in scuba in 1997 in Barbados, despite god-awful sea-sickness. I also learned to drive a stick-shift in 2001 (something I never thought would happen) because Jeff insisted that our fi rst car be a stick-shift (clearly, he had not done much driving in the NY/NJ/CT tri-state area). Hope to see familiar faces at the reunion and would love to hear from/reconnect with friends who can’t make it.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After leaving MIT, I moved to Phoenix to work for Orbital Sciences for three years, where I was a practicing rocket scientist. Actually, it didn’t involve science so much as aluminum, duct tape, and lots of silicone RTV. Working for a large company in the defense industry cured my fascination with Aero/Astro, although I still look up every time an airplane passes overhead. I went to Stanford for a PhD and there discovered the microscopic and fascinating world of MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) and got bit by the Silicon Valley entrepreneurship bug. I worked for a startup for 3 years after graduating, then founded my own company in 2003, AM Fitzgerald & Associates (yes, very original name, I know - but the URLs for all the cool names were taken!). We are an 8 person fi rm that does custom MEMS product development. Can you say niche business? I have managed to engineer the perfect job for myself - I really love what I do. I enjoy living in the Bay Area, where I still see a lot of my dear friends from MIT on a regular basis. In my spare time, I am still playing ice hockey, and for the past two years, went to USA Hockey Women’s C Nationals with my team, the Fog City Sirens, that also features two other Class of ‘90 grads: Susie Wee and Julie Ask. Other jock-y pursuits include: triathlon, mountain biking, skiing and occasionally golf. I am still single, but that’s not for lack of effort.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Lasting friendships with the amazing people I met while at MIT Unifried - just kidding Baker House parties and ski trips Spending IAP mornings in the pottery studio MIT Women’s Ice Hockey Team Climbing the CITGO sign

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: -Worked at Goldman Sachs out of school. Biggest accomplishment - sat down the hall from Fischer Black. - Did a startup (Quantum Telecom Solutions) with fellow alum David S. Miller. Smartest move selling it in late 1998, before the bubble burst. Dumbest move - not cashing in all the Lucent options that vested in late 1999... :-) -Afterwards, was in for 6 years. Was great fun. Improved my bridge playing skill immeasurably. -Then went to Google, in 2006. Even more fun... :-)

And at the risk of spoiling the quiz in my picture caption - I have a 9yo boy and 11yo girl.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: I have worked at a Navy research and development base since graduation. I’ve worked on many different projects including shipboard fi refi ghting and life support gear, mission planning software, Joint command and control systems and (currently) non-lethal systems. I’m also currently in a program to get an additional Masters Degree in System Engineering with the Naval Postgraduate School, and I was just selected for a position as a Senior Systems Engineer on our base. I took a weeklong summer course at MIT on system architecting a few years ago, it was a lot easier than undergrad! On the personal side, I have been married to my husband for almost 15 years. He started as a Navy Diver and now he owns a yoga studio! We have two fabulous children ages 10 and 8. Our son is already eyeing MIT for college.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Dancing like a nut at Next House parties “Grape Sh-t” (5th Easters you know what I’m talking about!) Peking Ravs and “n-1” dishes at Royal East (n-2 if it was a big group) STS courses (do they still have those?) Anything during IAP Chamber Chorus Stress relieving jogs along the Charles.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: I wish I had more hands-on classes. I really lacked practical engineering skills my fi rst few years. I also think many of the theoretical and conceptual ideas would have made more sense to me if they had an associated lab-type component. I also should have learned that I actually am a highly capable engineer despite my “poor” grades. It took me about 10 years to realize that I did learn a lot at MIT, and regain my confi dence so I could really fulfi ll my potential.

MIT Class of 1990 Reunion Book Name: Jema Gonzales Degrees: 1990, SB - Bachelor Of Science, 2 - Mechanical Engrg, Email: [email protected] Home City: Dobbs Ferry Home State/Country: NY Living Group: BAK

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After graduation I went to work for Cambridge Technology Group, right on Vassar St. in Cambridge across from campus - an information systems consulting company. After 2 years I went to Wharton for my MBA, graduating there in ‘94. I then joined ATKearney management consultanting and worked for them for 5 1/2 years. In 1998 I married Mark Cooper, MIT class of ‘91. In early 2000 I left ATK and started at GE, where I spent the next 8 years in a variety of different roles, the most recent of which was leading the growth and strategy for a division in the commercial real estate division. In 2008 I resigned to be a full-time Mom - my kids were 6 and 3 at the time. Now my son is 8 in 3rd grade and my daughter 5 in Kindergarten. I volunteer with a Foundation in my town that raises money to fund programs in our local school district.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: My favorite MIT memories are of the people and the friendships I made at MIT, and the fun times (and sometimes not so fun!) times we shared. I remember late night problem sets, hanging at Baker House, unbelieveably low scores on tests my freshman year :=), and fun parties.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: I should have done a UROP at MIT! Can’t believe I did not take advantage of that opportunity.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: Returned to Jamaica a few months after graduation and climbed the corporate ladder in Information Technology in various organizations. Decided to change careers to something more fulfi lling by helping youth. Thus, I returned to the U.S. in 2005 to do a PhD in Planning, Governance and Globalization at Virginia Tech. I have a focus on crime prevention through community development. Working to fi nish this summer.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: The best course I ever took was a drama course with Theo Theophilus. He made the material so fun and interesting.

Took advantage of the economic downturn last summer to buy a house on over an acre with lots of great features. We just planted some corn and watermelon and would love to share it with visitors this summer!

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: I loved the women’s gymnastics program (recently cut though). It was probably the fi rst thing I’d ever allowed myself to do (and enjoy) without needing to get good at it! I was very sorry to see it go. I loved all my roommates and friends and the experiences we had together e.g., TTCC, views from the Citgo sign and McCormick’s rooftop, trudging the Mass Ave bridge in blizzards at night, etc.). I miss you all. My most memorable courses were all the ones in astrophysics and many of the applied math classes. I still think about the mathematical models that dictate traffi c fl ow whenever I’m stuck in traffi c or behind some idiot at a light.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: Meritocracies will only advance a person so far... after that, it’s all politics.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After graduating from MIT, I spend a few years working in NY and then studying in London. I returned to the U.S. to go to Yale Law School. After I graduated law school in 1996, I married Bob Newman, ‘89, and clerked for Judge Guido Calabresi of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and then Justice Stephen Breyer at the Supreme Court. We settled in D.C., and I went to work prosecuting civil rights crimes for the Justice Department. My cases were all over the country, and they included mostly hate crimes and violence by public offi cials, such as police brutality and sexual assaults. I was there for nearly 8 years with some breaks to have my three kids. I left in 2006 to come teach at the University of Virginia Law School, where I work now. I teach mostly criminal law and criminal procedure courses, and research the legal regulation of the police. My kids are now 9, 7, and 5. Despite how far I’ve strayed from my engineering degree, they’re clearly kids of MIT folk, extremely interested in math and science. They remind me how much I’ve forgotten. We’re happy with small town life here in Charlottesville, and I expect we’ll be here a good long while.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After long time away, I returned to MIT for a masters degree. I’ve just completed the Systems Design and Management program (sdm.mit.edu) and am graduating as well as attending the reunion! It has been interesting to see up close what has changed (and what hasn’t) a the ‘Tute. This came after 15+ years in the automotive industry, working at Johnson Controls in product development and quality assurance. Johnson Controls is a tier 1 supplier of interior components (such as seats and dashboards), serving all of the major auto companies. I worked on every stage of product development, from the beginning of a product idea to the start of volume production, and with people from many countries. After graduation, I am joining CGN and Associates, a business performance consulting fi rm. I look forward to a variety of new challenges beyond the automotive industry.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: My best memories of MIT are of going to parties with my friends on the weekends and playing cards late into the night with my Russian House mates. And then working on problem sets. Unifi ed may not count as a favorite, but it was memorable. I don’t miss it as much as I miss Andy’s Chili. :)

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: My favorite memories involve my fraternity brothers at Phi Kappa Theta—everything from parties to the kinds of wide-ranging philosophical discussions you only have time for in college. The massive road trip of my brothers to my wedding in Michigan following graduation (two of the brothers, CDH and MCK, were in the wedding party) represented to me a tremendous sense of belonging. Other fond memories include the Festival Jazz Ensemble and the Fencing team. The Physics Sleeping Room, er, I mean “reading” room... (big overstuffed leather couches). Performing with the band “Solo Faces” at the Battle of the Bands (set list included “The Lobster of Love,””I Only Eat Toroidal Foods,” and “The F***s”). Best courses included those from Tod Machover and Barry Vercoe (media lab), and , Peter Child, and Mark Harvey (music). Single most entertaining class I took was Prof. Thorburn’s Comedy (literature) class—foul-mouthed, hilarious, and genuinely eye-opening.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: The day after graduation I began work at a small architecture fi rm in Hanover, NH. After three years of tolerating the insufferable (Dartmouth students) it was time to head to Virginia Tech for grad school. Realizing that architecture wasn’t really a design fi eld I loved enough, I diversifi ed into graphic and publication design along with editorial work. Internships at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and later with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Geneva followed. After returning to the United States I spent four years putting up with DC. Then when I didn’t think I could stand it much longer it was time to return to New Hampshire. I’m in my sixth year at an educational publishing company in the Lakes Region as the creative director/prepress coordinator, but I also do freelance publication design that tends more toward scholarly work about architecture, architectural history, and culture. I enjoy the stability that comes with in-house work, especially when I can combine it with other projects that allow me to continue growing. What’s next? I’m not completely sure, but I’m always looking forward to fi guring out what will be next for me, especially since my love for print makes me refuse to believe it will ever completely die, despite any dire predictions to the contrary.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: There weren’t that many courses I enjoyed, though I did almost look forward to a few, but some were certainly more useful than others. Thanks to the late, great Eric Sollee, fencing was so much fun I took it twice. As for the best academic courses, there were those that crossed over into Course XI, and probably started me on the way to my career change many years later because of the research and writing involved. Oddly enough, many of the most enjoyable events are strangely coupled with times that were otherwise miserable, such as working with the rest of the Ring Committee to create and deliver the greatest Brass Rat ever while dealing with Unifi ed and too many other commitments. Playing IM tennis one night after being up for 38 straight hours is another favorite. I Learned that twelve pizzas could be completely consumed by roughly 45 college guys in just shy of ten minutes during a study break. Also, staying up until 3 AM to get through all 45 levels of a video game is both pointless and stupid, not to mention the game merely starts over again - whoopie. One of the great tragedies in life is that raw chocolate chip cookie dough really ought

MIT Class of 1990 Reunion Book to belong to a food group. There are others that I’m not really at liberty to discuss right now. About the time we were freshmen I read something pointing out that many colleges advertised that their students learned more at lunch than in the classroom (note that ours was not one of them) - so why was it that lunch didn’t cost 16 grand a year instead of vice versa? The crucial lesson I gained from living with a bunch of other people was that the person who clamors the most for people to be understanding and tolerant will ALWAYS be the single most annoying personality in the room. Most importantly: friendships endure, especially those forged during periods of intense pressure and/or stress. Adversity really does have a character-building, unifying effect, perhaps the greatest lesson we learn from our time in Cambridge. Too bad it’s not a great slogan to use in the brochures.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: If only I had learned how to get everything done during a given day and manage to get a full night’s sleep. If somebody could just create the thirty hour day! Shouldn’t somebody have tackled that for a UROP?

I would love to receive advice/help from classmates regarding ___ or contact me if you need help/ advice regarding ___: So if you need a publication designer, or your company needs to hire someone . . . No, I don’t have any real connections within the publishing industry that can help you get your manuscript published. But if you have a print/publishing project that you think I can do or advise you about, feel free to contact me. I’m in a profession that is all about continual and constant growth. I don’t design websites (at least not by myself, yet) but I’ve done plenty of electronic media type projects and I’d like to do even more.

Anything else (such as pop-culture elements of the late 80s that I do or don’t miss): I never miss an opportunity to visit the Institute, and that has always been the case during the past twenty years. I enjoy being on college campuses anyway, but our “little technical school” always makes me feel like I’m home and I feel energized simply by being there. Yes, I’m warped. I still wonder if the day will come when I can actually return to the world of numbered buildings in a professional capacity as my older sister had the opportunity to do three years ago, and somehow contribute or give back to the place. Somehow it represents both Heaven and Hell for me simultaneously. There is no question that I bleed Cardinal Red (and no that’s NOT maroon!), but thanks to oxygen that’s not a challenge. I miss nearly everything about the 80s (even some of the fashion) and refuse to let most of the music go as my massive iTunes library and concert schedule for this summer will attest. But I don’t miss going to class and working on projects ALL night. Now I just work on them MOST of the night (sometimes).

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: Analyst at Cornerstone Research, 3 years. Grad school in Health Economics at Duke, 5 years. Bonus: met and married husband Jonathan Schreiber. Economist at Health Economics Research/Research Triangle Institute, 5 years. 2 children and not working outside the home, timeless. These days I spend time taking photos, gardening, practicing yoga and being with my 4 and 6 year old girls, Sophia and Sarah. My husband Jon and I enjoy skiing, boating, going to the beach, and each other, even after almost 13 years of marriage. If you had told me at MIT this would make me happy I would have laughed in your face. I still feel the need to be more useful in the world sometimes, but have learned to act locally (volunteer at school) rather than worry so much about saving the world. Give me a couple years until Sophia is in school full time, then maybe I can fi gure out what I want to do with my life.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Took lots of good courses, had lots of good times, but all so far from my life now. Had nobel prize winning , will likely have nobel prize winning classmates in another 20 or 40 years. Made amazing friends, still tell detailed stories to the high school seniors I interview of crazy road trips, parties and just hanging out in the lounge. Tae Kwon Do was probably one of the best things I did for myself at MIT, though my hip fl exors aren’t so sure about that these days.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After graduating from MIT, I attended the University of Rochester (NY) 1990-1996 where I obtained an MA in Psychology and a PhD in Brain and Cognitive Science. My doctoral dissertation focused on the visual perception of colored surfaces. I continued my psychophysical research in visual perception during a postdoc and Research Scientist position at SUNY College of Optometry in New York, focusing on the perception of 3-dimensional objects. In 2004, I joined the faculty in the Psychology Department at Queens College (one of the senior campuses of CUNY) in Flushing, NY. My tenure and promotion to Associate Professor kicked in this past year (yipee!), and now I am experiencing all the administrative joys that come with tenure, including directing the Masters programs for the Psychology Department, and serving as Acting Director of the undergraduate Neuroscience major.

I met my husband, Andrew, during my postdoc at SUNY. He started his own company a few years ago marketing products and services for the visually impaired (so we share many interests in vision!). We got married in 2006 in Setauket, NY, and have been living on the upper east side of Manhatten for several years now.

Image courtesy: An-Chian Kao Work City: Boston Work State/Country: MA Nickname: Quisp

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: First, I fi nally graduated in 1997. :) I have re-affi liated with 1990, when I was *supposed* to graduate... my B.S. involved 10 semesters over 11 years, a major change, and several changes in HUM-D/HASS requirements--interspersed with a semester overseas (Hansard Scholars Programme in Parliamentary Government at U of London), a stint in The Illiterates (rock’n’roll band with other MIT alums in New York), consulting at Lawrence Livermore National Lab (expert systems work analyzing seismic events to decide if they were earthquakes or underground nuclear tests), and doing other independent computer consulting. Married An-Chian (Wellesley/MIT) in 1998, 2 kids (Alana, 7; Xander, 4). Currently, I serve as CTO for 2 startups (RetireHub and The Counsel Connect Network) in addition to running Village Software. Some years ago, I co-authored a Que book on Microsoft Offi ce. I’m now starting to write a couple of books: 1) How to manage software projects with distributed teams (I’ve managed over 1000 software projects, have done hundreds of distributed teams, and have a few ideas to share regarding what works and what DOESN’T); and 2) How to get what you want in a custom software project (for small- and mid-sized businesses). I have another idea that requires serial entrepreneur interviews. If that’s you, give me a shout. I’m an Instructor for 2 classes in Northeastern University’s online MBA program: Managing Information Resources and Information Analysis. After climbing Mt. Washington 2 years ago and realizing how in-shape I *wasn’t* (I’d done gymnastics at MIT, but you wouldn’t have known it after 20 years of desk work), I decided to get back in shape. The rule was: “If anyone asks you to do something active, you will say ‘yes’.” I’ve been running and joined a reduced-calorie study at Tufts (the 2 year “CALERIE” study, I’m 10 months in). I’ve lost 35 lbs and I’m training for my fi rst (sprint) Triathlon in late July. This means I need to learn how to swim (I just barely passed the MIT swim test on the last possible day, and subsequently got SCUBA certifi ed, but have no idea how to breathe on my own when swimming, especially in open water). Goals for the race: 1) Don’t drown. 2) Finish. Can a person learn to swim from YouTube? I’ll let you know. I’m also in a (loose) progressive bluegrass band.

I’ve been involved in lots of MIT stuff: mentor for 12.000 (“Solving Complex Problems”), International Graduate Student Mentor, Reunion Chair, President of MIT Club of Boston (several years ago), externship host company, MIT Educational Counselor, Tech Challenge Games, various entrepreneurial events, etc.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Proposing to An-Chian. Joe Haldeman’s writing classes and Henry Jenkins’ sci fi classes were great. 6.270 was a blast, as was 2.70. Logarhythms concerts and tours. Bricked-up shower, hanging the point on building 66. Steam tunnels. All-night gaming. Great parties at both frats and dorms. Unicycle jousting

Medical studies (pink goop & sugar cookies, time isolation / sleep / circadian rhythm studies, etc.) Wellesley teaching certication coursework. Bumping into Doc Edgerton in the halls. Theory of Relativity with Lightman. Interactive Media class. IAP - glass-blowing, blacksmithing.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: Wish I’d taken more physics courses. Wish I’d taken 6.003. Wish I’d done anything at Sloan. Would like to have learned more about how to productively communicate ideas (presentation, writing, etc.) More machine- shop and/or woodshop work.

I would love to receive advice/help from classmates regarding ___ or contact me if you need help/ advice regarding ___: Can help with: I love to talk about/help with/advise/connect people regarding entrepreneurial ideas. Happy to provide contract software devt (Microsoft-based tech: web, SQL Server, MS Offi ce) Happy to provide software project management help/advice.

We’re looking forward to this new career direction and hope that it will allow for more time to do things such as attend MIT class reunions. We won’t get up there this year, but I’m already looking forward to our 25th in 2015!

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: I stayed at MIT for another six years after graduation working on a PhD in physics (astrophysics), did a postdoc in the Netherlands for three years, and then got another postdoc at Harvard that brought me back to Cambridge. Somewhere around then, I decided that the academic life wasn’t for me and that I wanted to live in Cambridge and fi nd a “real” job. One rapidly fell into my lap (it was the late 90’s!) and I have had a great time in (mostly) start-up companies where I have done modeling, experiment design, and statistics in retail, pharmaceutical development & discovery, and transportation systems. I am presently the chief scientist at a start-up in Cambridge. In 2004, I married the wonderful Margaret D. Moore, a musician and arts manger who went to Oberlin which I’m convinced is essentially MIT for humanities geeks. We have a two-year-old daughter, Alice, and are expecting another daughter in July 2010. Marriage and kids are the best things that have ever happened to me -- and the most diffi cult as well! We bought a house in Arlington, MA and are enjoying the suburban life and the proximity to Boston.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After college I stayed around Boston for a few years, fi nally moving out to California where I have been ever since. I have spent most of my working career at Applied Materials in various positions, including managing a new college graduate program where I got to hire MIT grads. While there I received an MBA from Santa Clara UniversityAfter a brief economy driven sabbatical I am back again in the solar marketing group. : I’m married to a metallurgist turned soccer coach and we have two wonderful little boys. I also do some mommy blogging and other social media in my spare time.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Some of my toughest classes forced us to stay up until the wee hours solving problems together, although those might not be my fondest memories. I remember a Materials Science lab where we complained to the professor that we weren’t allowed to actually touch the expensive equipment. Next thing we knew were manipulating a TEM that grad students went though hours of training to use. I wish I could remember the classes better (does wine tasting count?), but mostly I remember how tough they were. I probably had the most fun in Psychology, and while at the time I felt those English writing classes were a bit of a pain I appreciate the fact that MIT made us all learn to write. Hanging out at Baker was always fun, with the study breaks and great parties. I still miss hopping on a subway to Filene’s basement, and until it closed made a point to stop there on every recruiting trip to MIT.

I would love to receive advice/help from classmates regarding ___ or contact me if you need help/ advice regarding ___: I would love to receive advice from classmates regarding marketing opportunities in the solar or alternate energy fi eld. I would also love advice about b2b social marketing. Contact me if you need help fi nding contacts in the semiconductor or solar fi elds, particularly equipment.

I’ve been in New York ever since graduation. Personally, my wife Sue and I have been married 15 years. We live on Long Island and have two kids -- Aaron, 13 and Brianna, 11 (by the time you read this.)

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Favorite classes: 6.035, 6.004 were my favorite classes, with 6.111 and 6.003 close behind. Random memories: Orange tours during R/O week. “LSC...SUCKS” Working at until all hours of the night/morning freshman and sophomore year.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: How to loosen up and not take everything so seriously. (I still haven’t learned that.)

Anything else (such as pop-culture elements of the late 80s that I do or don’t miss): Still listen to Squeeze and it always reminds me of living in NTS.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: I somehow decided to come back for another round of torture...um...education for grad school, and, and after 6 more fairly torturous years, graduated from the Technology Policy Program in 1998. I was happily surprised to fi nd a fi rm that focused on exactly what my PhD thesis was about and spent 8 satisfying but very very busy years doing strategy consulting work at PRTM. After our second child was born, I decided to pursue a more down to earth direction doing science education for kids. I managed to connect with Mass Audubon in 2007, where I started part-time as “the owl lady” doing live animal presentations and environmental science fi eld programs for kids from preschool on up. I joined Mass Audubon full time a year later and now have the absolutely fabulous job of designing interactive science exhibits at Drumlin Farm, a combined working farm and wildlife sanctuary in Lincoln, MA. I can honestly say that I love my job, even though it’s nothing that I ever imagined doing during all those late nights studying physics. On the home front, Karl Büttner (MIT ‘87) and I got married twelve years ago, and we still go various MIT events when we can so we can talk about how much the campus has changed in 20+ years. We live in an old farmhouse in Sudbury, MA with our two boys: Noah (6) and Caleb (almost 4).

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Making it through Junior Lab (mostly) mentally intact, Sweetheart Ball, TTCC, almost anything Course 21, linear equations, mastering “Grill-Fries-Fountain” ordering at Pritchett, water polo, convincing myself to go back for grad school.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: How to solve a circuit

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Organizing Transfer R/O and Clearinghouse. What a great opportunity to help people to get connected. I really appreciated the opportunity to get started in research in Dr. Ringe and Professor Tannenbaum’s labs. UROP was the best.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: I didn’t know at the time, but my experience in helping AEPi to reorganize was great training in what to do (and what not to do) in leading associations. Thanks to all of the brothers who contributed to this learning experience. Starting in graduate school, I was able to expand my involvement in the Jewish community and organize large events, serve on boards and committees, and generally help people to get connected. This activism had its roots in the crucible of MIT.

I would love to receive advice/help from classmates regarding ___ or contact me if you need help/ advice regarding ___: I’d love to hear from classmates that would like to reconnect after all these years. It would be fun to reminisce.

Anything else (such as pop-culture elements of the late 80s that I do or don’t miss): I still do love 80’s music and dance music. Thankfully, now there is Pandora and iTunes to access the best.

MIT Class of 1990 Reunion Book Name: Janet Richard Former names: Janet Ann Fordunski Degrees: 1990, SB - Bachelor Of Science, 1 - Civil & Env Eng, Email: [email protected] Home City: Lake Forest Home State/Country: CA One Happy Triathlon Finisher in Encinitas, CA. Job Title: Project Engineer Image courtesy: Phil Richard Work Company: Pacific Advanced Civil Engineering (PACE) Work City: Fountain Valley Work State/Country: CA Living Group: BEX

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: I moved to California on my own and worked as a Civil Engineer in San Diego. I met up with Jaquelyn O’Bryan (MIT 1991) and she got me hooked on skydiving, which got me hooked on Phil, who I met on the drop zone. We were married in 1994, and in 1995, I think I became one of the youngest moms of the class of 1990. Even though I was a licensed Professional Engineer, I decided to quit and become a full-time mom. Although I didn’t know it at the time, this turned out to be a great career move for me. During my time out of the work force, I learned a lot about people and what they need. Now that my boys are older, I have gone back to work and have a very satisfying career in water and wastewater engineering, partly because everyone I work for is younger than me and I know how to deal with kids. During those mommy years, I did a lot of volunteer work. I started our elementary school annual Walk to School Day event, and now it happens every year without me. Amazing how good things just go on living. I also mentored the Future Scientists and Engineers club and once dressed like Aristotle to discuss how he came up with the law of bouyancy. Then I mentored a team of 8th graders in the Future City Competition and they won the Best Presentation award at the California Science Center. When complaining about how the budget cuts are reducing the number of days kids go to school, my kids said, “But Mom, we learn more when we don’t go to school.” So I think I did a good job staying home with my kids. Since my boys are older now, (6th grade and a high school freshman), I occasionally have some free time. So when I’m not designing wastewater treatment plants or chauffeurring my son across two cities to hip hop class, I am training for triathlons. I swim, bike and run whenever and wherever I can. In races I have had to swim in 55 degree water in mid-November and in the Pacifi c Ocean during icky red tide algae blooms or with surf twice my height. Once I got hypothermia during a race when it started pouring in the middle of the bike ride. In July I will race in the NYC tri and swim in the Hudson River, bike through the Bronx, and run through Central Park. People keep asking me if I need a Tetanus shot or pepper spray. I’m not sure, but I know that triathlons never fail to present some interesting challenges, and that I will come away with yet another lesson under my belt. Because we really do learn a lot when we aren’t in school.

MIT Class of 1990 Reunion Book Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: All the friends I made living at Bexley - Kelly, Dan, Tim, Katy, Jyoti, Jory, Mike, Joel, as well as Aras, Tim and Alfredo from that other dorm, McGregor Music Theory, Concert Choir and Band Getting the Bexley basement piano tuned Going to the Squeeze concert and dancing right next to the stage Learning how to play Ice Hockey and Rugby Mike teaching me how to pick locks so I never had to worry about losing my dorm key

I fi nd it a trip when you still occasionally hear songs from that time period playing on the radio or other places.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: Let’s see. I left MIT to go into the Air Force. I spent 5 years having a surprisingly great time. Most of that was either building a new backup for NORAD or working in NORAD--either way, very cool work and great people to work with. With some mixed feelings I left the Air Force and found my way into the computer networking business...been there ever since. The past 11 years have been at Juniper Networks (Unisphere Networks, Redstone Communications) where I am now VP, Technology and run all of our Systems Engineers globally. Again, great work and great people. Work has brought me back to New England...seems I could never get far away. I have been trying for years to get back to Colorado, but may have to settle for Texas once my girlfriend returns from a year working in Munich, Germany. No plans for cattle, but a more central airport will likely help keep my frequent fl yer numbers a bit lower!

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Nothing could compare to Strobe Lab. Shooting a gun on campus was entertaining. Shooting potato chips, erasers, stuffed animals, etc was even more fun. But, nothing compared to interacting with Doc Edgerton-- his excitement was infectious and his curiosity had no bounds. Easy to see how he became so successful, he just wanted to learn about anything/everything. He was quite the amazing man.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: It’s been all about numbers and fi gures. As the 20th reunion approaches, I am also celebrating 20 years as a United States Air Force offi cer. Scattered across 20 years: 10 moves (6 being trans-Atlantic), 3 deployments, 5 domestic addresses, 3 German addresses, 1 Greek address, 1 Italian address, 7 cars, 4 signifi cant promotions, 4 years in the Pentagon, 4 passports (it’s a long story), 2 years of grad school and 2 MS’s, and countless fantastic and talented peers/bosses/friends. Focused across 20 years: 1 wife Dana, 1 son Matas, and 1 daughter Rasa. Yes, we’re rather vowel-effi cient. Never dull, never boring. Always fun and interesting.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Tosci’s. Strobe class. Sunrises. The length of the Mass Ave Bridge, in smoots; no such measure of the Longfellow Bridge. Parking tickets boosting the cost of a pizza to $60. 9.01/9.02. Professor Ralston. King Kong. UROP, and using your own blood in a bio-electric experiment. Putting 5V across 555s. Skiing down Gunstock. Biking up & down Mount Snow. Taking a Puerto Rican (hostage) to the beach in Maine, saying the water is “brisk.” The Media Lab. MBTA. Pritchett burgers and shakes. EG&G. 8.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: Balance, time management, and the proper rules of rugby. Also, 2.40. And the difference between

Changing careers to follow my passion for personal fi nance and investing.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: My favorite MIT memories are hanging out on East Campus First West and starting the Theta Lambda chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority. January training with the Crew Team in Florida. Snowball fi ghts on the roof. Learning to ice skate during IAP. Intramural ice hockey. Summers on campus. Thirsty Thursdays. Knowing there was always a party somewhere on the weekends. Laughing at the guys on Third West for watching back to back episodes of Days of Our Lives EVERY DAY! Climbing on top of the little dome and wandering around in the basements. The year the sodium drop was a bigger splash than expected!

MIT Class of 1990 Reunion Book Name: Heather Tibbitts Former names: Heather Lee Hopp Degrees: 1990, SB - Bachelor Of Science, 4 - Architecture, Email: [email protected]

Home City: East Greenwich Canon Mt, NH. Home State/Country: RI Job Title: Dir. Childcare & Household Affairs Spouse Timothy J Tibbitts Living Group: NH

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: Tim and I married just after graduation, taking a nice long honeymoon in Europe. We moved to NH shortly thereafter, where I started in kitchen design (since architecture in this region was in the tank due to the savings and loan crisis). I eventually moved on to engineering project management. Our fi rst child was born in June 2001. I continued to work, eventually reaching a position of Sales and Operations Manager for a small tech company. Upon the birth of our second child in June 2003, I decided to retire and become “Director of Childcare and Household Affairs for the Tibbitts Family”. We have since moved back to our childhood home of East Greenwich, RI. I have been actively involved on our local school system as a parent volunteer and occasional activist/agitator. I also write a monthly article for our PTG newsletter for our Character Counts program. Now that our youngest is in school full time, I have decided to return to the work force (Mommy hours) in the job I had the most fun in: kitchen design! It’s hard to believe how fast the time has passed. Tim and I will celebrate our 20th anniversary this June!

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Walking all over Boston Daybreak on the Charles Next House 5E camaraderie Space Habitat Design Studio

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: Multitasking is overrated.

Anything else (such as pop-culture elements of the late 80s that I do or don’t miss): I don’t miss shoulder pads, leggings, and over-sized sweaters. Since you mentioned it, I quite enjoyed Star Trek: TNG. However, I recently saw the new movie/cast, and they were fantastic!

MIT Class of 1990 Reunion Book Name: Veena Trehan Degrees: 1990, SB - Bachelor Of Science, 61 - Electrical Engrg, Email: [email protected] Home City: McLean Home State/Country: VA Job Title: Freelance writer and reporter Work City: McLean Work State/Country: VA Living Group: BUR

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: Worked for a decade at one of the fastest growing D.C.-based technology companies (employee #11) before its sale in 2005. Obtained a Masters in Business Administration from Darden in 1995. Earned a masters in journalism in 2008 from University of Maryland funded by a Reuters Fellowship. Worked at National Public Radio, Bloomberg News, and Reuters. Wrote a column for 3 years on prominent Washingtonians in business, sports, the arts and culture. Currently a freelance writer focused on environmental and other policy issues.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: I’m going to reinterpret this to worst courses I took. In one class, one of the “00s” I believe, nobody ever understood a word of the professor. Instead we used the class as an opportunity to catch up on some much needed sleep, write notes to our friends, or doodle pictures of the sun (which we could just barely remember). One day, in the middle of the class, the professor put up a slide and looked up expectantly. When continued with our usual activities, he exploded. “This is a slide from ANOTHER class,” he announced, completely vexed. “It doesn’t make any sense at all in this course.” He was appalled, we were mildly amused. The course remained baffl ing complex for the rest of the semester. As for other favorite memories: Being in the middle of a huge water fi ght that had drenched Burton Third, armed with fi re extinguishers. The elevator door made a rumbling noise and a half dozen of us poised to drench the unsuspecting rider - which turned out to be the house master. “You have 5 minutes to clean this up,” he said, or some such. It was terrifying but pretty great. Contemplating painting the room black to capture the utter despair of my freshman roommate (Laura Armstrong) and I who were there for Columbus Day. Our other ridiculously cheerful roommate (Elizabeth Williams), who ran around saying, “Don’t you just love MIT?”, had gone home to New York. We settled on placing that picture of a face in agony from “The Wall” right above her top bunk. And, really, a million others (but not academic).

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: How to ace a Course VI fi nal. How to clean my room. How to function effectively on 4 hours of sleep for a WHOLE semester. How to fi nd a study group (well, earlier than senior year). How to live happily on no money except a meal card for some truly awful food (several generations before the current excellent meal offerings). Etc.

I would love to receive advice/help from classmates regarding ___ or contact me if you need help/ advice regarding ___: I’d love advice on outlets for print or online publication of a variety of stories. The topics are broad ranging from: (1) environmental and other policy issues, (2) issues of consumer protection, (3) helping people make informed choices from an environmental and public/personal health perspective, (4) profi les, and (5) parenting.

Job Title: Vice President, FP&A Work Company: Laureate Education, Inc. Work City: Baltimore Work State/Country: MD Spouse Michelle R Trousdale Living Group: PDT

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: On the professional side, after graduation, I spent fi ve years in the Navy, primarily on board the nuclear ballistic missile submarine, USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN 641B). On board the Simon Bolivar, I held a number of positions, including Main Propulsion Assistant and Communications Offi cer. After passing my Engineers exam, I fi nished my Navy career in the Bremerton Naval Shipyard on board the USS Pargo (SSN 650), where I helped that crew defuel and dismantle her reactor core. After leaving the Navy, I joined a small boiler manufacturer in Northern Indiana as an engineering manager, while at night I completed my MBA at Kellogg (Northwestern Univ.) In 1999, I graduated from Kellogg and joined US Airways in their MBA fi nance development program, and held a number of positions including Vice President of FP&A. At US Airways, I lived through the highs and lows of the airline industry, including the unfortunate all-time low of 9/11 (which I witnessed fi rst hand as the Pentagon is a short walk from the old US Airways headquarters). After two bankruptcies, we successfully merged with America West Airlines, after which I joined Northwest Airlines in their fi nance department. At Northwest Airlines, I assisted them in their reorganization under Chapter 11 bankruptcy, led their fi nancial planning team, headed up the fi nance team responsible for labor negotiations, and worked very closely with their joint venture partner across the Atlantic, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Unfortunately, the winds of industry consolidation continued to blow, and after the merger with Delta Airlines, I decided to leave my airline career behind. Now I am heading the worldwide Financial Planning and Analysis function for Laureate Education, Incorporate - a privately held leader in the for-profi t post-secondary education business. We have operations on every continent, with over 50 different institutions of higher education and over 500,000 students world-wide. I am living, as it turns out, back in my home town of Baltimore, although it seems like I am abroad as much as I am home, and actually fl y more now than I did during my airline career. On a personal note, in 1992 I married Michelle Roy of West Hartford, CT. We have two beautiful daughters, Audrey (age 8) and Elise (age 6), who are both attending Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore. And, of course, they are both taking up lacrosse. Additionally, they are both heavily involved in gymnastics as well as the more typical extracuriculars of swimming and music. If anyone fi nds themselves in the Baltimore area, or even if you are visiting DC, please do not hesitate to shoot me a note so we can try to catch up.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: Playing varsity lax and intramurals nearly everything; annual 2.70 competition; rush (but not work week leading up to it); living in Kenmore Square; Prof. Rota and his daily proof that Pavlovian behavior is exhibited by students as well as dogs (the sound of him popping open a can of ice-cold Coke, broadcasted over the speakers in 10-250, followed immediately by several hundred others throughout the lecture hall, is something that I will never forget); sailing on the Charles and on board NSY-22 Patriot to Newport MIT Class of 1990 Reunion Book Name: Mawuli Tse Degrees: 1990, SB - Bachelor Of Science, 2 - Mechanical Engrg, 1992, SM - Master Of Science, 2 - Mechanical Engrg, 1992, SM - Master Of Science, TPP - Technology & Policy, Email: [email protected] Home State/Country: Ghana Job Title: Director of Intl. Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After spending a few years benchmarking software at PTC, I jumped with both feet and eyes closed back home to Ghana, where I helped set up the ISP Africa Online’s operations. After that I went into entrepreneur frenzy and set up a solar energy company, a computer networking company, and a bunch of other projects and activities. Made no money but had great fun! I’m sobered up now, and spent the last ten years setting up and managing telecom interconnects in Africa for iBasis. It’s been a great chance to be part of the telecom revolution and getting to know Africa in all its variety.

Jake looks to be a budding story teller, and Barbara and I imagine he’ll be a writer when he grows up. I did a lot of skydiving in the 1990’s, but gave it up shortly before Miranda was born, and immediately after a particularly hard landing where I broke my ankle. I still own my otherwise unused parachute. These days, my spare time is spent making 3D art with Lightwave 3D; attending Miranda’s gymnastics meets; wrestling with Jake; and reading Harry Potter to both kids.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After MIT I went to Stanford Medical School. I considered research briefl y but found that I really loved clinical medicine. Calfornia was hard to beat so I decided to stay at Stanford for Internal Medicine Residency. I had a great opportunity to take over a local practice so I have stayed on campus but in a private practice. My life is fairly well balanced by working 4 days a week and being a mom the rest of the time. During residency, I met my husband, Randy, who is a Cardiologist at Stanford. We were married soon after and live on campus. Randy has a daughter named Olivia who is now 18 and attending Stanford. We rarely see her but hear she’s having a blast. We have 3 kids - Emma age 7, Evan age 5 and Alex age 10 months. We’re having a lot of fun! I enjoy reading books, exercising and time with family and friends. We take as much vacation as possible with regular time spent skiing at Kirkwood in the Sierras, hiking at Stanford Sierra Camp near Lake Tahoe, beach time at Martha’s Vineyard and hanging out in New York City with Randy’s family. We still have an annual week long MIT ski trip that’s been ongoing for over 20 years! Life is good.

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: After graduation, I moved to California and worked for Oracle for about 6 years in software development and customer training. While there, I attended Stanford University part-time, and earned my Master’s degree in Engineering-Economic Systems (Decision Sciences). I married my high-school sweetheart, Kathy, in 1994. After Oracle, I worked in product marketing for a series of small Silicon Valley software companies: One Touch Systems, Lumina Decision Systems, and BoldFish. After our son was born in 2002, I accepted a product management position with SAS Institute, a large statistical software company, and we relocated from the Bay Area to Cary, North Carolina. But my career was about to take a different turn. I’ve always been a baseball fan, and one of my hobbies has been baseball statistics. In the late 1990’s I started working with a fl edgling group of baseball enthusiasts writing a annual book called Baseball Prospectus (aka BP). The BP annual grew to become the best-selling book of its kind, and was a New York Times bestseller. Over the next decade I co-wrote 10 books, including several editions of the BP annual, Mind Game: How the Boston Red Sox Got Smart, Won a World Series, and Created a New Blueprint for Winning, and Baseball Between The Numbers: Why Everything You Know About The Game Is Wrong. The latter was voted “Book of the Year” by Sports Illustrated, and the #1 baseball book of the year by Amazon. I’ve also written for ESPN and MLB.com, and been interviewed or cited by many newspapers and magazines, with Sports Illustrated, , among them. Baseball Prospectus launched a subscriber website containing daily articles and unique statistics. I became the Director of R&D, and developed much of the statistical database that powered the site’s reports and other features, in addition to my own writing. BP’s analysis and unique content became well known in major league front offi ces. I developed a reputation for some of the innovative research I had done, such as analyzing the relationship between pitcher workload and injuries, and for creating a statistic called Value Over Replacement Player, or VORP, which was one of the more popular of the “new” generation of baseball statistics. This all culminated in 2007, when I was hired by the Cleveland Indians as the Manager of Baseball Analytics, a newly created position in the baseball operations group. I make recommendations to the general manager on players, prospects, trades, free-agent signings, and game strategies by analyzing subtle trends and creating mathematical models from a huge database of statistical records, scouting reports, medical information, and other sources of baseball knowledge. I’ve been in this role for 3 years as of this writing, and have grown a department of analysts and developers dedicated to baseball analysis.

Favorite MIT memories or best courses I took: The MIT 3-day Mystery Hunt, when Mark Virtue helped us solve the “locker conundrum” by slagging the lock with a nitro-acetylene torch. Oh, and making the hunt for the following year.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: How to pick a lock. Always wanted to do that...

MIT Class of 1990 Reunion Book Name: Michael Zody Degrees: 1990, SB - Bachelor Of Science, 3B - Materials Sci & Engr, 1994, SM - Master Of Science, 3 - Materials Sci & Eng, Email: [email protected] Home City: Waltham Home State/Country: MA Job Title: Senior Computational Biologist Work Company: Work City: Cambridge Work State/Country: MA Living Group: NW2

Personal/Professional highlights since 1990: In June 1996, I joined the sequencing group at the to work on the . Almost 14 years later, the Whitehead Center for Genome Research is now part of the Broad Institute. I’ve had 6 offi ces in 4 buildings (as of my next move this summer), 4 managers, and 3 legal employers without changing jobs. In 2007, I started splitting my time between Cambridge and Uppsala, Sweden to pursue a Ph.D., which I completed in 2009. Along the way, I’ve had a few interesting experiences, including visiting the White House in 2000 to watch Bill Clinton announce the completion of the fi rst draft of the human genome, dining with nobel laureate Jim Watson, and playing in a band with current NIH Director Francis Collins. I’ve been interviewed by BBC Radio, and I once turned down an offer to appear on one of Geraldo Rivera’s shows.

Things I SHOULD have learned at MIT, but didn’t: We were one of the last classes that didn’t have a core biology requirement, part of the reason I fi nd myself in the strange position of holding a Ph.D. in Medical Science without ever having taken a biology class at any educational level.

Anything else (such as pop-culture elements of the late 80s that I do or don’t miss): I knew I was getting old the fi rst time I heard Edie Brickell’s “What I Am” and felt nostalgic. I hated that song when we were in school.
