  • €˜Shameless’ Thanks Fans for Season 9 Return
‘Shameless’ Thanks Fans for Season 9 Return 06.07.2018 Shameless star Emmy Rossum and other cast members thank fans for their love and support in Showtime's teaser announcing a ninth season of the series. The promo features a nostalgic montage that looks back at key moments from the show. When it returns, political fervor hits the South Side and the Gallaghers take justice into their own hands. Frank (William H. Macy) sees financial opportunity in campaigning and gives voice to the underrepresented South Side working man. Fiona (Rossum) tries to build on her success with her apartment building and takes an expensive gamble hoping to catapult herself into the upper echelon. Meanwhile, Lip (Jeremy Allen White) distracts himself from the challenges of sobriety by taking in Eddie's niece, Xan (Scarlet Spencer). Ian (Cameron Monaghan) faces the consequences of his crimes as the Gay Jesus movement takes a destructive turn. Debbie (Emma Kenney) fights for equal pay and combats harassment; and her efforts lead her to an unexpected realization. Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) sets his sights on West Point and prepares himself for cadet life. Liam (Christian Isaiah) must develop a new skillset to survive outside of his cushy private school walls. Kevin (Steve Howey) and V (Shanola Hampton) juggle the demands of raising the twins with running the Alibi as they attempt to transform the bar into a socially conscious business. Shameless will premiere September 9 at 9 p.m. Immediately afterward at 10 p.m., Showtime will debut new half-hour comedy series Kidding starring Jim Carrey in his first series regular role in more than two decades, and reuniting him with director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

  • Movie Review: ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’
Movie Review: ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ NEW YORK — There’s plenty of humor and action in the fast-paced sci-fi adventure “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (Disney). What’s noticeably lacking is any exposition or guidance for those not already familiar with the characters and their relationships from 2015’s “Ant-Man” and 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War.” While the film can still be enjoyed on its own, newcomers will feel somewhat left out as a result. One example of the potential confusion awaiting novices is the fact that, when we first encounter him, Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd, who also co-wrote the script) is approaching the end of a two-year sentence of house arrest. That’s the consequence, we learn, at least by implication, of his activities in the latter of the two previous movies. But specifics on what exactly he did are not shared. Whatever his wrongdoing, Scott — whose alter ego, thanks to a high-tech suit, can shrink or grow at will — is now anxious to focus on serving his time and raising his young daughter, Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson). Scott’s good resolutions are undermined, however, when his predecessor as Ant- Man, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Pym’s daughter, Hope (Evangeline Lilly), aka the Wasp, draw him into their quest to rescue Hope’s mother, Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer), the original Wasp. Janet been stuck for decades in the Quantum Realm, a kind of subatomic limbo. To retrieve her, the trio will have to do battle with two principal enemies: Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins), a petty gangster out to profit from Pym’s technological breakthroughs, and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), a victim of Pym’s past misdeeds.

  • Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies a Thesis Presented to the Facult
In the Company of Modern Men: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Nicholas D. Bambach August 2016 © 2016 Nicholas D. Bambach. All Rights Reserved. 2 This thesis titled In the Company of Modern Men: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies by NICHOLAS D. BAMBACH has been approved for the School of Film and the College of Fine Arts by Ofer Eliaz Assistant Professor of Film Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT BAMBACH, NICHOLAS D., M.A., August 2016, Film In the Company of Modern Men: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary Hollywood Comedies Director of Thesis: Ofer Eliaz This thesis discusses the increasing visibility of masculine identity in contemporary Hollywood comedies. I examine how shifting developments in economic, societal, cultural, and gender relations impacted the perception of cinematic masculinity. The men, more specifically white and heterosexual, in these films position themselves as victims and, as a result, turn to alternative outlets to ease their frustrations and anxieties. In order to broadly survey the genre of the past two decades, I focus on three consistently popular character tropes in Hollywood comedies: slackers, office workers, and bromantic friendships. All the male characters discussed throughout the thesis are plagued by their innermost anxieties and desires that compromise their gendered identities. However, these films resort to a regressive understanding of masculinity and functions within the dominant heteronormative structures. This thesis demonstrates how Hollywood comedies present a contradictory and multifaceted image of modern masculinity.
