THE GRAIL SECULAR INSTITUTE The Grail Secular Institute offers a particular way of life to single or widowed Catholic women. Those who belong make a formal commitment to live out their baptismal promises through the channel of the Grail and its mission.

There are two ways of belonging, as members of the Grail Community or as individual members (Companions). All members seek to find God in their everyday life situations.

Community members live together expressing a simple, uncluttered and celibate life-style. They aim to be open, to heal and to release the gifts of those they meet. They are accountable to those with whom they live and see all that they undertake as enabling people to grow towards their full potential.

Companions of the Grail live independently and follow their chosen occupation. This makes specific demands on each person but also provides challenge, support and guidance. They meet regularly in area groups and aim to be alert to developments and needs in both Church and society so as to bring an informed response to daily situations.

MADONNA HOUSE APOSTOLATE Madonna House is an Apostolic Family of lay women, lay men and priests. We are a family in the Church dedicated to loving and serving Christ in all people. We make lifetime promises of poverty, chastity and obedience. Our main house and training centre is in Combermere, Canada. Approximately 200 members serve in 18 field houses in six countries.

In 1985, Madonna House was invited to take responsibility for St Bede’s chapel in Robin Hood’s

Bay and to develop a Pastoral Centre at this location. At present there are four members in residence. People are welcome to drop in for a chat and cup of tea, to spend quiet time in prayer or make a personal retreat. Our house is also open for groups to come. Sometimes it is for Mass and a talk and a get together, perhaps a packed lunch or shared meal. Sometimes it is for a day of recollection. Young people are welcome to come for an experience of community life. Please call to book a day. Members are also available to travel elsewhere in the diocese to give talks.

CARMELITE DISCALCED SECULAR ORDER (OCDS) Carmelite Discalced Seculars (OCDS) are members of a lay community called to live ‘in allegiance with Jesus Christ.’ Under the protection of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and inspired by the teaching of St Theresa of Avila, St John of the Cross, St Thérèse of Lisieux and other Discalced Carmelite Saints, they seek to infuse prayer and life with Apostolic zeal. SECULAR FRANCISCAN ORDER (OFS) St Francis of Assisi left us ‘a Dream to dream and a Journey to challenge everyone.’ All Franciscans are inspired by him to follow Christ. The Secular Franciscan Order belongs to this family. In their secular state, members permanently commit themselves to live the Gospel as Francis did, following his Rule approved by the Pope.
