The report was commissioned from MOLA by Convoys Investment S.A.R.L.. Following the recommendations of the archaeological consultant CgMs in consultation with the London Borough of Lewisham and English Heritage, 52 evaluation trenches were excavated. Boreholes and trial pits excavated by a geotechnical contractor were also monitored. The results of the field evaluation have helped to refine the initial assessment of the archaeological potential of the site. Three main areas have been identified as particularly important: the area of the Great Dock near the east boundary of the site; the footprint of the Grade II listed Olympia building where the evaluation demonstrated that stone slipways survive; and the area of the early 16th century Tudor storehouse, a scheduled ancient monument. Other structures identified during the evaluation included: the large mast pond and the small mast pond in the west of the site; the dockyard basin; multiphase buildings; the remains of the 18th century dockyard wall; and other slipways. -

ABSTRACT This thesis sets out to investigate gardens, gardeners and gardening practices in early modern England, from the mid-sixteenth century when the first horticultural manuals appeared in the English language dedicated solely to the ‘Arte’ of gardening, spanning the following century to its establishment as a subject worthy of scientific and intellectual debate by the Royal Society and a leisure pursuit worthy of the genteel. The inherently ephemeral nature of the activity of gardening has resulted thus far in this important aspect of cultural life being often overlooked by historians, but detailed examination of the early gardening manuals together with evidence gleaned from contemporary gentry manuscript collections, maps, plans and drawings has provided rare insight into both the practicalities of gardening during this period as well as into the aspirations of the early modern gardener. -

Strategic issue Whilst the Mayor has delegated authority to GLA officers to negotiate and execute the section 106 legal agreement, GLA officers seek endorsement of the proposed drafting of the section 106 agreement in terms of provisions related to community projects. In particular, GLA officers seek the Mayor’s confirmation that the obligations proposed to be secured in respect of the Sayes Court Garden Project and The Lenox Project accord with the provisions that the Mayor sought to secure when he decided to approve the Convoys Wharf outline application on 31 March 2014. Recommendation That the Mayor agrees that the drafting of the section 106 agreement accords with the provisions that the Mayor sought to secure when making his decision to approve the Convoys Wharf outline application at the Representation Hearing on 31 March 2014. Context 1 On 31 March 2014 the Mayor of London, acting as local planning authority, resolved to grant conditional planning permission in respect of Lewisham planning application DC/13/83358 subject to the prior completion of a section 106 legal agreement. As part of his decision to approve the scheme the Mayor sought to secure a number of additional section 106 provisions for the Sayes Court Garden Project and The Lenox Project. By looking through the lens of an early eighteenth century French garden design treatise, we can trace their rise to popularity during the second half of the seventeenth and early eighteenth century to their gradual decline as a garden feature during the second half of the eighteenth century. -

Surrey Canal – a case study of urban regeneration The Surrey Canal regeneration scheme aims to comprehensively transform a predominantly industrial area around, and including, Millwall football stadium in North West Lewisham (bordering the Borough of Southwark), South East London into a new place in the capital. The scheme will include: A new station Surrey Canal on the Overground Line New bus routes 2400 homes across five communities within the scheme 2000 new jobs An improved setting for Millwall FC New facilities for the Millwall Community Scheme An iconic local and regional indoor sports complex A 150-bed hotel with conferencing facilities A major new church to seat a 1200-strong congregation A creative industries quarter A health complex specialising in sports injury and community care Improved permeability including walking and cycling links A business incubation centre Creche and nursery An improved park at Bridgehouse Meadows. The theory is that improvements in each of these areas ‘combine to secure the upward trajectory of a locality in a long- term and sustainable manner’ (Tallon: 2013, 5). This report will analyse the Surrey Canal regeneration scheme in each of these five areas. However, this report will not be able to assess the long-term sustainability outcomes of this regeneration scheme because the development only received planning permission in 2012; is in the early stages of construction and is expected to take 15 years to complete. -

Creation of a new public open space on a proportion of the Upper School site (Amersham Vale). The applicant The applicant is Lewisham Schools for the future education partnership Ltd., and the architect is WGI architects and BDP. Strategic issues Lewisham Council has resolved to approve permission for both applications. Having regard to the details of the applications, the matters set out in the committee report and the Council’s draft decision notices, the proposals are broadly consistent with the London Plan and there are no sound planning reasons for the Mayor to intervene in this particular case and no basis to direct the Council to refuse the applications. Recommendation That Lewisham Council be advised that the Mayor is content for it to determine the case itself, subject to any action that the Secretary of State may take, and does not therefore wish to direct refusal. Context 1 On 8 March the Mayor of London received documents from Lewisham Council notifying him of a planning applications of potential strategic importance to develop the above site for the above uses. -

Discover the History of Southwark by Bike Train
Discover the history of Southwark by Bike Train Practice cycling a low-traffic route to Central London whilst learning more about Southwark – it’s our guide to the local history you can find along the Bike Train We know that starting cycling can be a bit daunting, which is why we organise the Southwark Bike Train ride. This shows cyclists how to get to central London along low traffic routes from Nunhead, Peckham and Denmark Hill, via Burgess Park. The Bike Train route is safe and largely car-free. It’s a good route for many commuters – but it’s also a nice way to practice cycling and navigating longer distances. To make it a bit more fun for anyone that wants to practice walking or cycling the route we have written this guide to the local history of the area. You could ride it yourself, or make it into an afternoon’s walk with friends or family. The route starts at Denmark Hill train station, goes to Burgess Park (and the Burgess Park café) before travelling up to Blackfriars and the North-South cycle superhighway to Central London. By bike it should take about 40 minutes, and on foot about 1 hour and 30 minutes. During warmer months we run a group Bike Train ride every Wednesday morning, and during the winter we go once a month (for specific times see our events page). The Route To start with you will need to download or print the route to the bike train from our ride-routes page. Part One: Denmark Hill to St Giles Starting at Denmark Hill train station, come out of the station and turn right, then immediately turn right again down Willow Walk.
