TASK 2 - Understand How Media Producers create products for specific audiences P2 - Constructing media products for specific audiences

In this assignment I have been have been tasked with creating a report compare two different media text from the film and television industries. One of the examples must be a big Hollywood budget production in contrast to the other which must be a lower budget independent production. The two productions I have chosen to compare are “Money Heist” and “ Girls”/ Money Heist has a worldwide audience and the budget was much bigger as Netflix funded seasons 3 & 4. I personally feel like Derry Girls is a good exa Male of an independent production as it didn’t have close to the same budget as Money Heist.

Money Heist is a very popular Spanish TV Series that has been a worldwide hit since Netflix ended up buying the worldwide streaming rights. Originally the show was only made for Spanish TV and first aired 2nd May 2017 on spanish tv network “Antena 3”but only became available worldwide on Netflix 20th December after Netflix acquired the exclusive global streaming rights for the series. Netflix re-cut the the originally 15 episodes, into 22 episodes of around 50 minutes long each. The show was created by Alex Pina. The series traces two-long prepared heists led. By the Professor, who is played by Alvaro Morte, one on the Royal Mint of Spain, and one of the Bank Of Spain. The series was initially intended as a limited series to be told in 2 parts. It had it’s originally run of 15 episodes on spanish network Antena 3 from 2nd May 2017 drought through until 23rd November 2017. Netflix acquired global streaming rights in late of 201. Netflix renewed the series with a significantly increased budget for 16 new episodes in total. Part 3, with eight episodes was released on 19th July 2019. Part 4, also contained episodes, was released on 3rd April 2020. Money Heist has been put under the genres Crime Drama, Heist & Thriller and all are very obvious reasons why.

The series was filmed in Madrid, Spaid. Some significant portions of Part 3, were also filmed in Panama, Thailand & Florence, Italy. The narrate of Money Heist is told in a very real time like fashion and relies heavily on flashbacks, time jumps, character’s hidden motivations and an even an unreliable narrator to add complexity. The series subverts the heist genre by the story being told from the perspective of a woman, Tokyo (Played by Ursla Corbero), and have a strong Spanish identity, where comtional dynamics offset the perfect strategic crime. When Netflix bought it they knew that the majority of their customers didn’t speak Spanish fluently, so Netflix dubbed the series and renamed it from La case de papel to Money Heist for distribution in the English speaking world. They realised the first part in December 2017, without any sort of promotion. Without a dedicated Netflix marketing campaign, the series became the most- watched non-English language series on Netflix in early 2018, which was only four months since the series was added to the platform. In October 2017, Alex Pina said that part 2 had remote but intentional spin-off possibilities, and that his team was open to continue the robbers’ story in the form of movies or a Netflix renewal. Netflix officially renewed the series for the third part with a considerably increased budget ion 18th April 2018. In August 2019, Netflix announced that part 3 was streamed by 34 million household accounts within the first week of release, of which 24 million finished the series within this period, thereby making it one of the most-watched productions on Netflix of all time, regardless of language.

Derry Girls is a created and written by Lisa McGee. Produced by Hat Trick Productions, it is set in Derry, in the 1990s. The series was broadcast in January and February 2018 on . The seconds series was shown in March and April 2019. A third series has been commissioned for 2020.

Derry Girls falls under the genres of Sitcom & Black Comedy as the show follows Erin, her cousin Orla, their friends Clare and Michelle, and Michelle’s English cousin James as they navigate their teen years during the end of the troubles in Derry, where they all attend a Catholic girls’ secondary school. The show has a very light hearted approach to the time set for the show by constantly making jokes about how both catholics and protestant are both so different while also using lots of Derry linguo. The show was filmed entirely in Northern Ireland, with most scenes being shot in Derry & . The show was renewed for a second series shortly after airing the pilot episode of the first series, and would ultimately prove to be Channel 4’s most successful comedy since . Production of the second series began on 8th October 2018, with the second series airing on 5th March 2019. On 9th April 2019, immediately after the second series finale, it was confirmed by Channel 4 that Derry Girls Is set to return for a third series. Derry Girls has received critical acclamation. The series was picked up by Netflix internationally, with series 1 being released on 21 December 2018. Series 2 was released on 2nd August 2019, except in the UK & Ireland.

In conclusion, through comparison of these two pieces of media I have found that there are quite a few differences in terms of genre and codes and conventions, however I feel that they are similar regarding their target audience as both aim for teens and young adults and are generally targeted towards both males and females..
