Dear Parents and Guardians,

At Dundalk High School, ensuring that our students perform well on the SAT is a top priority. Performing well is not just about the test, it also involves the thinking skills necessary to succeed

on the exam. The critical reasoning, logic, and writing skills necessary to perform well on the SAT are the same skills that employers will expect of our students when they enter the job market, even if they do not choose to attend college. It is proven that students who perform well on the SAT have better opportu- nities at receiving discounts and scholarships for their college education. It is also Principal proven that students who perform well on the SAT will be accepted to better schools. Preparation for the SAT does not start two weeks before the exam. Preparation for Kristin Anelli these 21st century skills needed to be college or career ready starts in grade nine. Assistant Principals If you are the parent of a student in Grades 11 or 12, we highly encourage you to ask your son or daughter to use the services of Ms. Dulin or Mr. Lapides, our resident Timothy Arrington SAT experts. They tutor free of charge after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Andrew Deming Students simply need to see Mrs. Dulin in room 2161 or Mr. Lapides in room 2152 to arrange to stay after from 2:30-3:30. Our faculty is fully dedicated to helping students Brett Molin achieve the thinking skills needed to perform well on the SAT. Preparation starts in Larissa Santos all classes in grade nine and continues on through to the middle of grade twelve. Please talk to your son or daughter and encourage them to take these SAT activities PTA President seriously. Sometimes in Grades 9 or 10, it is hard to see how or why PSAT/SAT ac- tivities are important. Free Breakfast and Lunch

Dundalk High School is participating in a Community Eligibility Provision pilot program for the current school year. All enrolled students attending DHS are eligible to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch meal at NO CHARGE.

There are no eligibility requirements. Breakfast is served from 7:15 to 7:45 am. Your student just needs to show up. There’s nothing to it!

Some additional items to note:

 Students must choose a meal that contains all the components re- quired by the USDA

 The breakfast meal offers 4 components and 3 must be selected

 The lunch meal offers 5 components and 3 must be selected

 Only full meals are FREE

 Students who have early dismissal after second period are invited to eat on A lunch if they like. But if they choose to eat on A lunch, they must stay for the entire lunch period and will be dismissed at 11:15.

 Students who have early release after second period and choose to not stay and instead go to their college classes or their jobs, they are welcome to do so, but should exit cam- pus immediately.

BCPS Tuition Free Program

BCPS Tuition Free Program is an early college access program for eligible BCPS juniors and seniors offered by the Community College of Baltimore County and Baltimore Coun- ty Public Schools.

What’s in it for me?

Take up to 4 classes tuition free; pay only applicable fees, books and supplies. Get a jump start on your college education while saving money and time. Be better prepared for college academics and college life. Earn credits toward your CCBC associate degree or transfer to another college of your choice.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Overall 2.50 grade point average. Enrollment in credit-bearing CCBC general education or career program courses. Demonstrated mature behavior.

What are the costs?

CCBC required fees, books and supplies. Students eligible for free and reduced-price meals do not pay CCBC fees.

Late Students

Effective Monday, January 30, students who arrive after 7:50 a.m. must check in at the DHS front office to get a pass. The doors on the Delvale Av- enue side will no longer be open for late students after 7:50 and students MUST enter at the back entrance.

SPARC Academy

The SPARC Academy is an innovative learning center here at Dundalk High School. The SPARC program is tailored to meet the personal needs and learning style of each stu- dent. Computer assisted instruction with one-on-one and small group sessions support the stu- dents’ learning. Personal attention is also provided by certified and specially trained teaching staff. When students complete their SPARC course, they will receive high school credit and be able to move on to another course if needed.

After School Program

 Any student may participate in the after school program to catch up on missing credits or get ahead in class credits. The SPARC Program meets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thurs- day from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in room 2142.

Special Education Liaison

Interested in learning more about special education?

Our PTA is seeking a parent of a child with an IEP to serve as SPECIAL EDUCA- TION LIAISON. This liaison will serve as a link between our school and the Special Education Resource Center, communicating needs and news. Some of the functions of the SPECIAL EDUCATION LIAISON are: learning about the needs of children with disabilities, becoming familiar with the Special Edu- cation services offered by Baltimore County Public Schools, and promoting parent/school partnerships.

Stakeholder Survey

Dear Parents,

It’s time for the BCPS Stakeholder Survey! Last year, we heard from more than 73,000 students in Grades 4-12, parents, community members, and staff. Your voice matters! Your feedback has helped guide school improvement, staff training, office safety, and reorganization planning. The survey is an easy way to help us improve further, takes about five minutes (phone, tablet or computer) and is now available in 16 languages for students, parents, and community members.

BCPS parents are encouraged to take the survey.

Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholarship

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, headquartered in Linthicum, Maryland, has estab- lished a highly competitive scholarship competition for Maryland high school students pur- suing a degree in engineering at an institution of higher learning. The Northrop Grumman Scholars program will award an $8,000 scholarship over the course of four years ($2,000 per year with ongoing eligibility requirements) to one graduating high school student in each Maryland county and Baltimore City. Each scholarship winner will be invited to a celebration dinner at the close of the school year, where he/she will be recognized by Dr. Karen B. Salmon, state superintendent of schools, and Kathy Warden, corporate vice president and pres- ident, Northrop Grumman Mission Systems.

Dundalk Optimist Club Sponsors Essay Contest

The Optimist Club of Dundalk is encouraging area students to contemplate the phrase “Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges” as part of the Optimist International Essay Contest for 2017.

The Dundalk Optimist Club will judge the local students’ essays, based on the theme of “Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges” and determine the top winners. Winners will receive AWARDS and the winning essays will be sent to the district level where college scholarships are available for top winners. Entries are due to the Dundalk Optimists by Feb- th ruary 20 .

Milestone Awards

The Dundalk Renaissance Corporation grants Milestone Awards to 1) one individual; (2) one business, nonprofit or government entity, (3) one youth 12-15 years, (4) one youth 16-20 years and (5) one CCBC Dundalk student with accomplish- ments that have made Dundalk a stronger community. Nominees may self-nominate or be nominated by another person. Nominees must live, work, or participate in activities that serve the Dundalk ar- ea (zip code 21222, County 21224) and exhibit leadership and com- mitment in the areas of the values of the Dundalk Renaissance Cor- poration: Neighborliness, Innovation, Heritage, Diversity, Oppor- tunity, Sustainability, Engagement, and Unity. The Milestone Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 18, at the Sparrows Point Country Club. Winners will participate in a celebratory program, be recognized for their dedication and commitment to Dundalk area, and share a delicious dinner with friends, family, colleagues, community members and business leaders. We are seeing scattered clusters of higher than normal rates of GI ill- ness.

The health department has recommended that we provide you with some guidance.

Health Department Guidance:

 Reinforce hand washing with your family members.

 Alcohol-based hand sanitiz- ers are NOT effective against all germs, including norovirus (which is a com- mon cause of GI illness.) Therefore, soap and water must be used regularly.

 Students with symptoms of norovirus (e.g., sudden onset of vomit- ing and diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and nausea) should be sepa- rated (as much as possible) from other family members and home from school for 48 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diar- rhea. (Take note: this is longer than the typical 24 hour guid- ance.)

The mission of the Dundalk High School Athletic Booster Club is to promote and support all extracurricular sports pro- grams at Dundalk High School. Attendance for team tryouts is very important. A player is required to attend 10 practices prior to becoming eligi- ble to participate in scrimmages or games. It is very difficult for any player to be selected for a team if they are not present during the tryout period. Most coaches will select their team after the first few days of tryouts. Please plan your summer vacation accordingly. Returning athletes are required to attend the 1st day of practice. Teams will practice Monday through Friday, and on most Saturdays.
