Audience with the Holy Father Francis and the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus

Pope Francis greeted the supreme knight, officers and directors of the Knights of Columbus as they visited Rome on pilgrimage this week to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Order’s establish- ment in the Eternal City. The praised the Knights for their “faithful witness to the sacredness and dignity of human life,” and its support for “Christian communities in the Middle East that are suffering the effects of vio- lence, war and poverty.” He added: “I thank all the members of your Order for seeing in our perse- cuted and displaced brothers and sisters of that region neighbors for whom you are a sign of God’s infinite love.” The Holy Father also called the Order “an important in- spiration to overcome a globalization of indifference and build together a more just and inclusive society.” He also addressed the members of the Knights, saying “I entrust you to the loving intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I offer my prayers for the mem- bers of the Knights of Co- lumbus and their families, and for the good works ac- complished by the local councils worldwide.”

Knights’ 100-Year Friendship with the Papacy The Knights of Columbus has supported every pope since the Order was established in Rome

The Knights of Columbus’ friendship with the Vatican extends a full century, beginning in 1920. Since that year, Knights have helped each pope with various initiatives from building recrea- tion and athletic centers in Rome to protecting the Eternal City from bombing during World War II.

A full history of the Knights, including our work with the Vatican, can be found in the book The Knights of Columbus: An Illustrated History. Here are some of the highlights:

Benedict XV Pope Benedict XV asked the Knights to build sports facilities for underprivileged Roman youth who didn’t have space for recreation, exercise and fellowship. The Knights answered the call by building several athletic recreation facilities throughout the city. Those centers are still in use today as outreach centers, sporting sites, food distribution centers and more –even hosting Special Olym- pic events.

Pius XI Pope Pius XI praised the Knights for mobilizing support for the Church of Mexico during the Mexican government’s persecution of Catholics in his papal encyclical Iniquis Afflictisque. He wrote: A word of very special praise is due those Catholic organizations, which during all these trying times have stood like soldiers side to side with the clergy.[…] First of all We mention the Knights of Colum- bus, an organization which is found in all the states of the Republic and which fortunately is made up of active and industrious members who, because of their practical lives and open profession of the , as well as by their zeal in assisting the Church, have brought great honor upon themselves.

Pius XII As a cardinal, Pope Pius XII visited the Knights of Columbus headquarters in New Haven in 1936. Later as pope, Pius XII worked with Count Enrico Pietro Galeazzi, the director of the Knights’ office in Rome. Galeazzi served as governor of during World War II, working as a liaison be- tween the Vatican and other nations, including the U.S. In one instance, Galeazzi brought a letter from Pope Pius XII to the White House, in which the pontiff asked President Roosevelt that Rome be spared from Allied bombing.

The Knights’ recreation centers in Rome also served as the pope’s distribution center of food and other necessities during the war.

John XXIII Pope St. John XXIII became the first pope to visit one of the Knights’ playgrounds in 1959. The visit must have impressed him, because a few years later, in 1961, he spoke about the playground to Su- preme Knight Luke E. Hart during a private audience. Pope John XXIII told the supreme knight that he had heard about the Order’s initiatives during his youth and later was pleased to witness with his own eyes “the fruit their charitable assistance was producing.”

Paul VI Since 1966 the Knights supported Vatican Radio. And under Paul VI, the Knights expanded their role in the Vatican’s communications outreach by donating equipment for Vatican Radio, underwrit- ing the creation the Vatican Film Library, televising special programs from the Holy See throughout the world and reprinting the pope’s championed encyclical Humanae Vitae. The Knights also donat- ed property that is now the site of the Vatican’sPaul VI Audience Hall.

John Paul I Supreme Knight Virgil Dechant was granted an audience with , becoming the first layman to visit with the new pope.

John Paul II The Knights developed a close working relationship with Pope John Paul II. The Knights not only tel- evised events and funded pastoral visits for the future saint, but also opened the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, D.C., and the Pontifical School of The- ology in Kraków.

The Knights also led a restoration project of St. Peter’s Basilica and funded a Polish chapel in the Vatican Grottoes. As a gift of appreciation, John Paul II presented to the Knights a copper cross once displayed as part of the statue of Christ on the roof of St. Peter’s. (The cross is currently on display at the Knights of Columbus Museum in New Haven, Conn.) The Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C. is an initiative of the Knights of Colum- bus.

Benedict XVI Pope Benedict XVI appointed Supreme Knight Carl Anderson to positions on the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, the Pontifical Council for the Family and the Synod on the New Evange- lization. The Knights also coordinated and commemorated the pontiff’s at Yankee Stadium in 2008.

It was during the reign of Pope Benedict XVI that Father Michael J. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus, was declared “Venerable.” The decree furthers Father McGivney’s cause for canonization.

Francis The Knights have continued to work with the Vatican throughout ’ pontificate. They pro- vide financial assist to Pope Francis through charitable programs and through supporting papal vis- its, such as those to the U.S. and Lithuania. They also supported , an initiative started by John Paul II and continued by Pope Francis. The Knights welcomed Pope Francis at the K of C – sponsored Mercy Centre during World Youth Day 2016 in Kraków.

Additionally, the Knights produced a documentary about Pope Francis, which you can watch here. We look forward to celebrating our support for the Vatican and the Holy Father for another hundred years and then some.

Apostle to the Irish: The Real Saint Patrick If you ask people who Saint Patrick was, you're likely to hear that he was an Irishman who chased the snakes out of Ireland. It may surprise you to learn that the real Saint Patrick was not actually Irish -- yet his robust faith changed the Emerald Isle forever.

Patrick was born in Roman Britain to a middle-class family in about A.D. 390. When Patrick was a teenager, marauding Irish raiders attacked his home. Patrick was captured, taken to Ire- land, and sold to an Irish king, who put him to work as a shepherd.

In his excellent book, How the Irish Saved Civilization, Thomas Cahill describes the life Patrick lived. Cahill writes, "The work of such slave-shepherds was bitterly isolated, months at a time spent alone in the hills." Patrick had been raised in a Christian home, but he didn't really be- lieve in God. But now -- hungry, lonely, frightened, and bitterly cold -- Patrick began seeking out a relationship with his Heavenly Father. As he wrote in his Confessions, "I would pray con- stantly during the daylight hours" and "the love of God . . . surrounded me more and more."

Six years after his capture, God spoke to Patrick in a dream, saying, "Your hungers are re- warded. You are going home. Look -- your ship is ready." What a startling command! If he obeyed, Patrick would become a fugitive slave, constantly in danger of capture and punish- ment. But he did obey -- and God protected him. The young slave walked nearly 200 miles to the Irish coast. There he boarded a waiting ship and traveled back to Britain and his family.

But, as you might expect, Patrick was a different person now, and the restless young man could not settle back into his old life. Eventually, Patrick recognized that God was calling him to enter a monastery. In time, he was ordained as a priest, then as a bishop. Finally -- thirty years after God had led Patrick away from Ireland -- he called him back to the Emerald Isle as a missionary.

The Irish of the fifth century were a pagan, violent, and barbaric people. Human sacrifice was commonplace. Patrick understood the danger and wrote: "I am ready to be murdered, be- trayed, enslaved -- whatever may come my way." Cahill notes that Patrick's love for the Irish "shines through his writings . . . He [worried] constantly for his people, not just for their spiritual but for their physical welfare."

Through Patrick, God converted thousands. Cahill writes, "Only this former slave had the right instincts to impart to the Irish a New Story, one that made sense of all their old stories and brought them a peace they had never known before." Because of Patrick, a warrior people "lay down the swords of battle, flung away the knives of sacrifice, and cast away the chains of slavery."

As it is with many Christian holidays, Saint Patrick's Day has lost much of its original meaning. Instead of settling for parades, cardboard leprechauns, and "the wearing of the green," we ought to recover our Christian heritage, celebrate the great evangelist, and teach our kids about this Christian hero.

Saint Patrick didn't chase the snakes out of Ireland, as many believe. Instead, the Lord used him to bring into Ireland a sturdy faith in the one true God - and to forever transform the Irish people.

Spring is a time of renewal and revival. March brings thoughts of spring. it’s time to begin Daylight Savings Time; a little more sunlight into the evenings as the days become longer. For those of us in the north, it means looking forward to the thaw after winter. For some it is welcome relief after months of frigid temperatures, howling winds and heavy snow. Spring also brings thoughts of spring cleaning. After being cooped up all winter, it’s traditional in many households to do that deep cleaning all throughout the house. That means washing down walls and moving furniture to clean behind pieces that haven’t seen the light of day since last year’s cleaning. It means taking down and washing drapes and curtains; windows are washed inside and out. (Thank goodness for modern tilt windows that mean no time outside in the chillier weather.) This is a time when the whole family is expected to pitch in and the “Honey Do” list gets longer and longer. In days gone by when most everyone had a coal fired furnace, a winter of closed windows meant the walls needed a good washing. With gas, electric and hot water boilers there’s less of a need to wash walls, but for some, it’s still a tradition. Spring is a time of renewal and revival. While you’re getting rid of all the old cobwebs of winter and freshening the house, now is a great time to do some sprucing up with a fresh look at your family’s financial security. A Knights of Columbus Field Agent has been trained to help you through that important exercise. Sit down with him for a free financial needs analysis using our Profiles+ Forecaster platform. He’ll take the time to gather information from you, ask about your wants, needs and desires, and put together some recommendations to help you meet those needs. We offer a wide range of top-rated products: life insurance, long-term care insurance, disability in- come insurance and retirement annuities; he can help you plan for your family’s financial security now and for many years to come. You can rest assured that we do business with the safety and se- curity of dealing with a company that shares your faith and beliefs and invests in accordance with Church teaching. Get ready for spring, get your home freshened up and make sure your financial house is spruced up. It’s an easy and friendly visit from your field agent, a brother Knight. Currently, our council does not have an assigned field agent. Another experienced, brother-knight agent will be happy to meet with you and your family. This vacancy has created an opportunity for a career as a Knights of Columbus field agent. In either case call Bob Lapczynski (262) 378-4854 we’ll get together and talk. Vivat Jesus!

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal benefit society, which means we can provide financial security to members and their families, while turning premiums into charitable impact.
