Sandman fans should feel lucky that master fantasy writer Neil Gaiman discovered the mythical world of Japanese fables while researching his translation of Hayao Miyazaki's film Princess Mononoke. At the same time, while preparing for the Sandman 10th anniversary, he met Yoshitaka Amano, his artist for the 11th Sandman book. Amano is the famed designer of the Final Fantasy Sandman fans should feel lucky that master fantasy writer Neil Gaiman discovered the mythical world of Japanese fables while researching Sandman: The Dream Hunters translation of Hayao Miyazaki's film Princess Mononoke. Amano Sandman: The Dream Hunters the famed designer of the Final Fantasy game series. Like most fables, the story begins with a wager between two jealous animals, a fox and a badger: which of them can drive a young monk from his solitary temple? The winner will make the temple into a new fox or badger home. But as the fox adopts the form of a woman to woo the monk from his hermitage, she falls in love with him. Meanwhile, in far away Kyoto, the wealthy Master of Yin-Yang, the onmyoji, is plagued by his fears and seeks tranquility in his command of sorcery. He learns of the monk and his inner peace; he dispatches demons to plague the monk in his dreams and eventually kill him to bring his peace to the onmyoji. The fox overhears the demons on their way to the monk and begins her struggle to save the man whom at first she so envied. Dream Hunters is a beautiful package. From the ink-brush painted endpapers to the luminous page layouts--including Amano's gate-fold painting of Morpheus in a sea of reds, oranges, and violets--this book has been crafted for a sensuous reading experience. Gaiman has developed as a prose stylist in the last several years with novels and stories such as Neverwhere and Stardust, and his narrative rings with a sense of timelessness and magic that gently sustains this adult fairy tale. The only disappointment here is that the book is so brief. One could imagine this creative team being even better suited to a longer story of more epic proportions. On the final page of Dream Hunters, in fact, Amano suggest that he will collaborate further with Mr. Gaiman in the future. Readers of Dream Hunters will hope that Amano's dream comes true. Believing it's an adaptation, most of us, on our initial reading, probably felt that Morpheus has arguably existed in a variety of different shapes or incarnations in reality, just as he did in Gaiman's created world. A story is a story and if you read or enjoy Sandman, you hopefully understand that all stories can take an abundance of shapes and forms. Taking from another culture always has the contains the risk and burden of cultural critique and, with it, the widespread negativity often imposed on cultural appropriation. By initially associating the work with that of an 'existing' tale, Gaiman may have wanted to smoothen his transition from Western to Eastern myth. Well, Sandman: The Dream Hunters version didn't have Cain and Abel and the Raven in it, but the monk and fox part was familiar. Not what I was expecting at all. Slightly disappointed to not get something new to me, but this was a very well-done version with lovely illustrations. This story has a very special place in my heart. It is about many things, but the nature of love and the sanctity of life are the themes that always echo in my brain when I flip through it. Besides, this illustrated novella format means we get more of Mr. Beautiful, melancholy and moving. View 2 comments. This Japanese folk tale was fairly familiar to me, but it was a pleasure to read an expanded version of it and then Sandman: The Dream Hunters discover in the afterword that Gaiman was a bit freaked out Sandman: The Dream Hunters see how close the story fit in with his Sandman series. Recently, after the latest Sandman Overture was released, I went back and reread all of the classic Sandman series from the 90s. Sandman: The Dream Hunters that I try to be, I'm glad I read this which was the first time Gaiman went back to the Sandman. Often, the best Sandman stories are the ones that feature Morpheus also known as the King of All Night's Dreaming here as a peripheral character. Similar vocabulary is used to talk about magic, love, dreams, visions ­­ as in The Faerie Queene, the inherent unreliability (and potential demonic origin?) of dreams and visions, and even of straightforward sensory data about the material world, is at issue.     EXPLORING IMAGINATION IN DARK TIMES Eight Painted Masks inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream SUMMER SOLSTICE I feel growing excitement as summer solstice - June 21 - approaches and my mind turns to nature and fantasy, and especially a play written by William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The play, which premiered on January 1, 1605, is set in midsummer in Athens. Shakespeare lived all his life in the shadow of the bubonic plague, writing prolifically during outbreaks and quarantine lockdowns in London and Stratford-on-Avon. MAKING MASKS OF IMAGINARY FAIRIES My project – painting odd alien paper masks - explores my need for vicarious pleasure in imagination. I am making masks of imaginary fairies from Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. These are freakish but cathartic. I begin with Titania’s fairy assistants, Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Mustardseed, and Moth, flowers and creatures from the garden or field, tiny and magical in imagination; in reality, complex, interconnected and amazing. COMPLETING EIGHT FAIRIES After the four fairies are complete, I am still thinking about the fairy characters. First, I make Fairy. Then I make contrasting King Oberon and Queen Titania to express their fraught relationship and the extreme dichotomies of jealous rage and peaceful gratitude. I complete the set with Puck, who enlivens the plot with his maddening pranks. The Stratford Festival’s 2021 paired down “pandemic” version of the play uses 8 actors to perform all the many human and fairy characters. PEASEBLOSSOM My imagination identifies with these fantastical creatures – my name Oonagh is that of an Irish fairy goddess and it is fun to imagine what a fairy’s life might be as compared to my life as a lawyer.

Whether it’s the presence of a married couple or two people who will be wed, it is a common theme in his works, especially in his Icomedies. Yet, the playwright adopts individualized approaches to each of the marriages in As You Like It, Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Hamlet, highlighting defining points of the characters, while revealing his own understanding of the concept. Marriage is as a central theme that propels the action in most of Shakespeare’s comedies. In terms of Midsummer Night’s Dream the action is propelled by the avoidance of a marriage. Hermia is denied the right to marry the one she loves by her father, Egeus, and Theseus, the Duke of Athens, resulting in Hermia and her lover, Lysander, running away, with Helena and Demetrius following, creating chaos.

    A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM TEACHER PACK 1 ABOUT THIS PACK This pack supports the RSC’s 2021 performances of Michael Morpurgo’s Tales from Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Michael Morpurgo’s retellings approach Shakespeare’s best loved stories from different perspectives and reimagine them for young people, and these writing resources will invite your pupils to do the same, considering how they might interpret them. The activities provided in this pack are specifically designed to support KS1-3 pupils in their writing and offers a number of writing opportunities centred around A midsummer Night’s Dream, exploring the story, characters and vocabulary.
