Charlie Betzelberger Director’s Note In March of this year, Dr. Seuss Enterprises – which controls the catalog of the author’s work – decided to cease publication on six classic Dr. Seuss books citing insensitive imagery and harmful racial representation. The announcement was met with a variety of reactions from support for the organization’s dedication to rectifying historical racism to derision for overly sensitive censorship or, as some in social media called it, the “cancelling of Dr. Seuss.” Seuss’ stepdaughter, Leagrey Dimond, describes the decision best by saying, “He was a man of his times who moved with his times, and he ultimately transcended his times.” Theodore Seuss Geisel was born March 2, 1904 and wrote over 60 books in his lifetime including some of the best-loved children’s books of all time: (1957), Green Eggs and Ham (1960), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1964), and Oh, the Places You’ll Go (1990). His work sold over 600 billion copies and was translated into 20 different languages by the time of his death in 1991. Geisel adopted the moniker “Dr. Seuss” in the 1920s as he became a lauded political cartoonist publishing work in The Saturday Evening Post, Life, and Vanity Fair.

While the current politicization of Dr. Seuss seems to be a reaction to contemporary culture, Seuss was quite political in many of his books and cartoons throughout his life. (1971) is about deforestation published of the environmental movement, The Sneetches (1961) examines racial equality, (1984) is an allegory for the nuclear arms race, Yertle the Turtle (1958) focuses on anti-authoritarianism in politics, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1957) is a tale decrying consumerism. All of these works are represented in some form in Seussical and reflect the adaptor’s intention to preserve the moral messages inherent in Seuss’ oeuvre.

After a year of pandemic and international shut-down, racial turbulence, and political strife, I think Seussical is the perfect return for Leawood Stage Company. The joy of these beloved stories exudes from the characters, music, and storytelling adapted by Lynne Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty as well as the talent and of this cast and creative team. But what I love most about presenting this work at this particular moment in history is the message that holds the musical together: “A person’s a person, no matter how small.” Dr. Seuss understood the power of this line when he wrote it for Horton Hears a Who in 1954 at the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. Little did he know that 67 years later, this phrase of equity, acceptance, and inclusion would be more prescient than ever.

As Dr. Seuss wrote: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!” - Dr. Chris McCoy, Director, Seussical Cast Bios Miranda Brand (Bird Girl) This is Miranda’s third production with Leawood Stage Company.
