Edberg Editor February 9, 1996 National Aeronautics and Space Administration Jet Propulsion Laboratory California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California The research described in this publication was done under the supervision of, and the publication was prepared by, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under a contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Reference herein to any specific commercial product, process, or service by trade name, trademark, manufacturer, or otherwise, does not constitute or imply its endorsement by the United States Government or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. ABSTRACT The International Halley Watch (IHW) was organized for the purpose of gathering and archiving the most complete record of the apparition of a comet, Halley's Comet (1982i = 1986 III = iP/Halley), ever compiled. The redirection of the International Sun-Earth Explorer 3 (ISEE-3) spacecraft, subsequently renamed the International Cometary Explorer (ICE), toward Comet Giacobini- Zinner (1984e = 1985 XIII = 21P/Giacobini-Zinner) prompted the initiation of a formal watch on that comet. All the data collected on P/Giacobini-Zinner and P/Halley have been published on CD-ROM in the Comet Halley Archive. This document contains a printed version of the archive data, collected by amateur astronomers, on these two comets. Volume 1 contains the Comet Giacobini-Zinner data archive and Volume 2 contains the Comet Halley archive. -

Image Circle The size of the circular image that lenses project is called the image circle. It is large enough to surround, or cover, the frame of the final image on the film. If you take a lens intended for 35mm film and use it with a larger-sized film, its covering power will not be exten- sive enough. As a result, vignetting, which is the dark- ening of the image’s corners, will occur. In a situation in which the covering power is extremely inadequate, a LARGE FORMAT LENSES LARGE FORMAT darkened circle appears around the image.
