Energy Resource

This multi-use resource provides a visual demonstration of the energy provided by a variety of different food and drinks.

There are two separate parts:

1. Alcoholic drinks

Resources: Information table x 1

Playing cards x 18 (alcoholic drinks cards x 6; energy provided cards x 6; food cards x 6)

2. Non-alcoholic drinks

Resources: Information table x 1

Playing cards x 33 (drinks cards x 11; energy provided cards x 11; food cards x 11)

Once printed and cut, these cards can be used in a number of different ways. The cards could be used to:

• match the alcoholic/non- to the amount of energy provided, and the food providing the equivalent energy; • order the alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks from low energy to high energy; • order the alcoholic drinks in numbers of units of alcohol provided; • order the food items from low energy to high energy; • discuss activities to expend equivalent energy, such as: How many minutes of running at 6mph would be required to expend the energy provided by a hot chocolate with whipped cream? • involve in a numeracy activity such as:

John drinks a pint of lager every evening. How much energy (kcal/kJ) does this provide John with over 7 days?

On Saturday night Jane drank 1 large glass of wine and 2 alcopops. How much energy (kcal/kJ) did this provide?

Katie has a hot chocolate with whipped cream every day after school. How much energy (kcal/ kJ) does this provide? If Katie was to have an instant low calorie hot chocolate instead, how much energy would this save?

• ask pupils to create their own cards with their favourite foods and drinks using our Explore Food tool http://explorefood.foodafactoflife.org.uk/ .

(TIP: if laminated, the cards could be used multiple times.)
