2021 @DUKESOFTBALL GAME NOTES TIGER CLASSIC | FEB. 12-14 MEET THE COACHES Marissa Young - Head Coach Fourth Season Michigan, 2003

Heading into her fourth year at the helm of the Duke softball program, Marissa Young holds a 77-62 (.554) career record. Before the 2020 season was shortened by COVID-19, Young’s squad saw its best start in program history with a 23-4 record. The Blue Devils ended their season at No. 25 in the final ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, marking the first time Duke has cracked into the national polls. Young put together a challenging schedule in 2019, playing 11 teams who went on to play in the NCAA Tournament, and finished Duke’s second season at 25-31. In the program’s inaugural RECORDS season, Young led the Blue Devils to a 29-27 record, including a 13-11 finish in ACC action to earn the #7 seed in the 2018 ACC Tournament. The Blue Devils’ Career 77-62 (.554) 29 wins were the fifth most by an ACC program in its first season while becoming the second school in league history to finish its inaugural campaign At Duke Same with a winning record. ACC 25-26 (.481) Home 46-23 Prior to being tabbed to build the Duke softball program, Young spent the prior two seasons across town at North Carolina, with her primary responsibilities Away 19-26 included coaching the pitchers and catchers. In the spring of 2015, Young helped the Tar Heels to a 37-16 overall record and a berth in the NCAA Tourna- Neutral 12-13 ment after the squad won 24 contests the prior season. Young’s pitchers posted a 3.30 earned run average with 234 strikeouts in 335.1 innings pitched. ACC Tournament 0-2 (.000) Young spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan, where she served as the compliance liaison, recruiting coordinator EDUCATION and managed team travel and the operational budget, among other duties. She helped coach five Academic All-America picks and five player of the B.A. General Studies/Criminology Michigan ‘03 week selections during her tenure at Eastern Michigan. Prior to her stint at EMU, Young was the head coach at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Mich., from 2008-11. In less than three years, she turned the 2-20 program to a 23-23 record, the second-most wins in a single season since an appearance in EXPERIENCE the 2002 NAIA National Tournament. Duke University (2018 - Present) Head Coach North Carolina (2014-15) Assistant Coach As a player, Young was a three-time All-America selection as a pitcher at the University of Michigan and was named the 2002 Big Ten Pitcher of the Eastern Michigan (2012-13) Assistant Coach Year and 2003 Big Ten Player of the Year. Young graduated from Michigan in 2003 as the all-time leader (927) and her 88 career wins became Concordia University (2008-11) Head Coach the second highest in program history. She also matched the then-program single-season record with 13 in 2003. Young played two years of professional softball, one overseas in Italy and the second year with the Texas Thunder of the . A native of Santa Ana, Calif., Young has four children: Braylon, Layla, Jolyna and Kayden. Josh Bloomer joined the Blue Devil softball staff as an assistant coach on July 3, 2019. Bloomer comes to Durham from Louisville, Ky., where he served as the head coach at Lou- isville Male High School for seven seasons. Bloomer joined after a successful campaign at Louisville Male High School, guiding his squad to NFCA and Kentucky state titles this past spring. His 2019 team put together a 39-0 ledger for only the second unbeaten season in program history and became the first team from the state of Kentucky to finish first in the country. For his efforts, Bloomer was tabbed a finalist for USA Today’s National High School Coach of the Year award, and his staff was named the 2019 Kentucky 3A State Coaching Staff of the Year. Over seven seasons at Louisville Male High School, Bloomer compiled a 458-147-4 mark and led the Bulldogs to six regional championships, state runner-up in 2015 and 2017 before winning the state title in 2019. Numerous Bloomer-coached athletes have gone on to play collegiately in the ACC, SEC, Big Ten, Sun Belt, Ohio Valley Conference, Horizon League, Big East, Atlantic 10, Ivy League, Mid-American Conference, Missouri Valley Conference, Atlantic Sun and Conference USA. In addition to excelling at the high school level, Bloomer has also seen success JOSH BLOOMER coaching on the travel softball circuit throughout his career. Bloomer-coached teams have on three occasions earned top-10 finishes at national tournaments, while his 2018 squad turned Assistant Coach in a top-25 showing in the 18U division at Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) nationals. Bloomer received a master’s degree in education from the University of Kentucky in 2002. He has been Second Season | Kentucky ‘02 married 12 years to his wife, Erin, and has two sons: Nathaniel and Cole.

Jessica Bracamonte was named an assistant coach with the Duke softball program on July 22, 2019 after spending six years as at Central Michigan. Bracamonte primarily coaches the outfield, slappers and assist with overall offensive strategies. Primarily the hitting and outfield coach for the Chippewas, she helped guide Central Michigan to the MAC Tournament every year, as well as capturing the MAC Regular Season Championship in 2017. Individually, she produced 12 All-MAC First Team selections, seven second team honorees and placed four players on the All-Freshman squad. Highlighting her conference honors were the MAC Player of the Year (Katelyn Rentschler) and Freshman of the Year (Sara Hansen) in 2015. In five of Bracamonte’s seasons on staff, the Chippewas placed at least one outfielder on the all-conference or NFCA All-Region team. Bracamonte’s leadership guided back-to-back outfielders in 2017 and 2018 to all-region accolades. Her guidance has also developed six all-time record holders at CMU with those players making a total of 54 appearances in the Chippewas’ record book. Prior to arriving at Central Michigan, Bracamonte spent a season as an assistant at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif. She also more than doubled the number of home JESSICA BRACAMONTE runs from the prior season and coached six players to above .300, including one player above .400. A native of Hacienda Heights, Calif., Bracamonte earned a bachelor’s degree from Assistant Coach Michigan State in 2012 and began her coaching career as a student assistant at MSU. She completed her master’s degree at CMU in 2016. Bracamonte was a standout outfielder and four- Second Season | Michigan State ‘12 year starter at Michigan State from 2008-11. As a senior, she led the Big Ten with four triples while hitting .328, slugging .458, and driving in a team-high 28 runs. She played professionally with the Chicago Bandits of National Pro Fastpitch.

Nicole Schaffer became the volunteer assistant coach in September 2020. Schaffer, formerly Sleith, was a four-year letterwinner and three-time Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year at Robert Morris (2012-15). Schaffer most recently served as the pitching coach at Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania from 2016-19. She’s also coached travel ball and at the high school level. During her collegiate career, the four-time NFCA All-Region selection boasted a 1.70 career earned run average with 27 shutouts through 806.1 innings. The left-handed pitcher recorded 932 strikeouts and collected 78 wins as a Colonial. She concluded her time at Robert Morris atop the record book in wins and strikeouts. Academically, Schaffer was a NFCA Scholar Athlete and named to the Dean’s List every semester as well as the NEC Academic Honor Roll each year. She earned two degrees from RMU in 2015– a bachelor’s in biomedical engineering and master’s in engineering management. While completing her degrees, she was an undergraduate pitching coach for RMU in the fall of 2015.

NICOLE SCHAFFER Volunteer Assistant Coach ASSISTANT COACHES ASSISTANT First Season 2021 @DUKESOFTBALL GAME NOTES TIGER CLASSIC | FEB. 12-14 INSIDE THE MATCHUPS GAME 1, 4 | DUKE vs. CENTRAL ARKANSAS All-Time Series Record: 0-0 The Blue Devils open their 2021 season against the Bears for their first meeting in program history before playing Central Arkansas a second time on Saturday. The Bears put together an 18-9 record before the 2020 season was cut short. UCA’s 1.76 ERA was ranked 17th nationally, led by Kayla Beaver with a 1.07 ERA with seven wins through 46 frames.

UCA was predicted to finish fifth in the Southland Conference, while four players earned Preseason All-SLC honors. Kaylyn Shepherd, Cylla Hill and Beaver were first team selections while Reagan Sperling was chosen for second team.

GAME 2 | DUKE at No. 5 LSU All-Time Series Record: 0-0 The first meeting between the two programs is set for Friday afternoon with a top-25 matchup as No. 25 Duke takes on No. 5 LSU. The Tigers are coming off a 21-3 season in which their pitching staff held the lowest ERA in the country (0.95) while the team’s .344 batting average was ninth nationally. LSU checked in at No. 5 in the final polls of the abbreviated 2020 season.

After a vote by the league’s head coaches, LSU was predicted to finish second in the SEC for the 2021 season. Four Tigers were named to the Preseason All-SEC Team as Aliyah Andrews, Ali Kilponen, Shelbi Sunseri and Shelby Wickersham all made the list.

GAME 3 | DUKE vs. McNEESE All-Time Series Record: 0-0 Saturday morning’s contest will be the first meeting between the two programs. McNeese is coming off a 19-7 season before it was ended by the COVID-19 pandemic. Its 2020 squad ranked 14th nationally with a 1.71 ERA, led by Whitney Tate with a 1.29 ERA through 28 innings pitched and a 3-2 record.

In the same conference as Central Arkansas, McNeese was picked to finished second in the Southland Preseason Poll. Cori McCrary and Kaylee Lopez represented the Cowgirls on the All-SLC First Team while Alayis Seneca and Saleen Flores were slotted All-SLC Second Team.

GAME 5 | DUKE vs. KANSAS All-Time Series Record: 1-0 Last Time Out: March 2, 2019; Duke won 8-7 (9) Duke will close out its time at the Tiger Classic with the second meeting all-time versus the Jayhawks. Kansas went 13-13 in 2020 before the season was abruptly ended by the pandemic. The Jayhawks saw power in their lineup as they ranked 10th nationally in home runs per game (1.31) and 25th in (.521). Kansas was predicted to finish last (seventh) in the 2021 Big 12 Preseason Poll.

The two teams last met on March 2, 2019 at the Duke Invitational in Durham. Kansas plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-6 lead, but Rilley Metzger forced extra innings with a RBI groundout to tie the game at 7-7. Metzger ultimately won the game for the Blue Devils with a two-run single in the ninth frame.
